How We Met

Mackie came into my life when I needed him most. I had just spent almost 4 years with a horse that was all wrong for me. Mackie was such a willing partner, he made having a horse such a treat. He tried to please no matter what you asked of him. Knowing what I know now, I realize that life was really tough for Mackie. He had many health issues, everything from mild colic to choke, to allergic reaction to a vaccine and then a reaction to the antibiotic. His biggest challenge was getting and surviving EPM not once but twice. As a result of the EPM meds he developed gastric ulcers, it just went on and on. Thru all of this Mackie never once complained. It looked like we were finally on our way to enjoying ourselves, when his behavior changed, nothing drastic, just a little off. After a consultation with our Vet, an appointment was made at the University Equine Hospital for Mackie to see a cardiologist. The night before our appointment I told Mackie that we were going to get some answers, in my heart I knew it was not good, but I had hope because after all, these people were specialists. It was a very long day, filled with tons of tests and information overload. When all the info had been gathered, we sat down and they explained to me that he was in heart failure, only one of his four heart valves was functioning. They felt that this condition had been present for years, they said for me not to beat myself up, it was NOT something that either Dr. Cook or I had missed. Typically horses don't show symptoms because they keep trying, they said Mackie never gave up, his heart did.. His prognosis was poor to hopeless, I had 3 options, 1. leave him at the hospital and treat, however, they told me that they did not recommend treatment, even if it did help, it would be short lived. 2. take him home to die, but it would not be a peaceful death. 3. I could let him go now. I choose to let him go, I stayed with him, at his side the whole time, it was important to me that my face and my voice be the last he saw and heard. I held him and told him how much he was loved, I came home alone that day. He was only 12. I donated his body to the University Hospital, I got great comfort from knowing that his heart might help someone else's horse. I miss him everyday. Love you Mackie. We will meet again.

Although equine polysaccharide storage myopathy is a completely manageable disease, the consequences can be tragic if you don't manage it. That's why AQHA offers a genetic test to look for the presence of PSSM in horses,as well as four other genetic diseases: GBED,HERDA,MH, and HYPP.

Scruffy always barks at Sadie, wanting her to play, when I let her out of her corral. Sadie bolted out of her corral, Wednesday, head down and chased him away. So funny. Poor dog. He ran to his doghouse. She got to enjoy freedom until she got into the shed, again, and pulled things out, making a mess. Trying to figure out how to make the shed Sadie proof. It's a rubbermaid and she pulls the doors off. Too smart. Lol. Love and a vote.

HI, left a vote. Got some Amber time today. Rode in the field and up to Brook's house and back down today. She wanted to eat and was wanting to get back quickly today. I told her no, she then tossed her head a couple of times, then she popped up. Only about 6 inches off the ground, lol. I brought her head around, told her " I don't think so sister!" Flexed her on both side a couple of times, gave her a pat on the neck, and told her to go to Brook's house. Off we went, not in a hurry and not trying to eat! LOL! She did great!

I am gonna tell you an insprinational Quarter horse story. By: Malee Powell Off of (American Quarter Horse Daily)

Let's take the story of "Dave" my perfect handsome Quarter horse with a not so perfect past, which involves (equine polysaccharide storage myopathy) My journey with Dave began about seven years ago. I was like any young horsey competitor. I wanted nothing more than to compete in barrels and win. Before Dave i was working with a couple of horses who were on trackto make my dreams come true. But what can i say? Matters of the heart know no logic. As soon as i laid eyes on that crazy eyed sorrel gelding with a stuck gas pedal & always caffeinated personality a 30 foot fence topped with barbed wire couldn't have kept me from him

CHARLIE KEEPS SHOES....
Good Morning, well the visit from the nutritionist was interesting to say the least...the good news is, I'm doing everything right as far as feed for Charlie. The bad news is, in order to go barefoot, here is what Marc does with his TB's, and before I try to explain this, keep in mind that this is a L O N G process, it won't happy overnight. He basically forces the hoof to become strong by OVER stimulation and corrective trimming, meaning, he lets them chip, he let's them bruise and even abscess if necessary, the over stimulation comes from the rigorous training, the pounding, the running, not just lolly gagging around the pasture. I know it sounds like cruel and unusual punishment, but it works for his racehorses. People at the track are always asking him "what is your secret? how can your horses run barefoot?" He said this is not for everyone, you must be committed to the work, and be prepared for the set backs, but when you get there you have a STRONG hoof. After a lot of thought, I realize, this is not for Charlie, he is not a working racehorse anymore, he is my pal, and it will be shoes for him. Have a great day, we left votes, Love Donna Lee

Quarter horses come in nearly all colors. The most common color is sorrel, a brownish red, part of the color group called chestnut by most other breed registries. Other reconized colors include bay, black, brown, buckskin, palomino, gray, dun, red dun, grullo (also occasionally refered to as blue dun.) red roan, blue roan, perlino, cremello & white. In the past spotted color patterns were excluded, but now with the advent of DNA testing to verify parentage, the registry accepts all colors as lond as both parents are registered.

Day 2 of my vacation. I only have one week right now and I booked another week in Sept. I am entitled to 4 weeks, however after being off work for 7 months, I have only got enough money in my vacation "pot" for 2 weeks, boo hoo. We had showers and tstorms off and on yesterday, but it cleared around 5PM, so at 6PM I headed to the barn just as David said, "are you cooking?" I said "ride or cook?" sounds like a no brainer to me....have a great day, Love Donna Lee

It was so humid here, Monday. I cleaned Sadie's water trough, filled it and then wet her down to cool her off. It rained twice. A total of about 5 minutes in all. Would love to live somewhere where it actually rains. Greenery would be a wonderful bonus. Sadie would love a pasture filled with green grass. Love and a vote.

Horses shown in-hand in halter competition are larger yet, with a very heavily muscled appearance, while retaining small heads with wide jaws & refined muscles. There is controversy among owners, breeders & veterinarians reguarding the health effects of the extreme muscle mass that is currently fashionable in the specialized halter horse. Which typically is 15.2 to 16 hands & weighs 1,200 lbs. (540 kg) When fitted for halter competition. Not only are there concerns about the weight to frame ratio on the horses skeletal system, but the massive build is also linked to HYPP.

There are two main body types: The stock type & hunter or racing type. The stock type is shorter, more compact, stocky & well muscled, yet agile. The racing type & hunter type Quarter horses are somewhat taller & smoother muscled than the stock type, more closely resembling the Thoroughbred.

The modern Quarter Horse has a small, refined head with a straight profile. And a strong well-muscled body. Featuring a broad chest & powerful round hindquarters. They usally grow between 14 to 16 hands. Although some halter type & english hunter type horses may grow as tall as 17 hands.

The American Quarter Horse is well known as a race horse & for their performance in rodeos, horse shows & a working ranch horse.

The compact body of the American Quarter horse is well-suited to the intricate & speedy manuvers needed in reining, cutting, working cow horse, barrel horse, calf roping, & other western riding events especially those involving live cattle. The American Quarter horse is also shown in english disciplines driving & many other equstrion activities.
