How We Met

Chance was one of the rescue horses the barn brought in. He was a racehorse, but we joke today that he must have raced turtles. He was extremely underweight and abused because he was no good on the racetrack, and had gone through many homes, where the owners tried to race him for fun. Another galloped him on concrete alleyways. We took him from that last home, finding him in a stall nearly knee-high in manure, still in tack with horrible rubs, sores and cuts around his mouth from the bit. He was such a skeleton we weren't sure if he would make it, especially since he didn't gain weight very quickly. But once he became a healthy weight and trusted us, he needed to earn his keep. Chance would barely listen for a walk/trot/cante- r under saddle and was terrified of jumping. He only had one gear - gallop. My beloved mare had passed just two weeks prior to this, so I needed a new mount, so he was given to me to train..
