How We Met

I volunteer at Winslow Farm Sanctuary in Norton, MA and met this troubled horse. I decided to work with him because everyone was scared of him. The owner gave him to me because he has become so attached to me, and I to him. He has since become a very lovable, playful, happy young man that you can ride! He sadly has a bad disk in his back, so some rides are shorter than others. (Read his full story in the comments at the bottom of this page!).

Had an accident
We had an accident Tuesday. The farms border collie nipped him in the leg when he was already fired up from her barking and the mule trying to get in the corral...I ended up on a 45 mph rocket for 3 rounds of the corral before falling face first into the icy mud.

It was far from his fault. He spooked and reacted. I held on for as long as I could. He was in flight mode and didn't hear me.

Luckily I walked away with a couple scraped and bruises, and a shook up horse that I needed to calm! Lots of pats, treats and hugs to show him I was alright and it wasn't his fault.

Meet Spirit (I have renamed him Dancing Spirit of the Wayward Winds, seems more fitting), an 8 year old Arabian gelding. He was brought to Winslow Sanctuary after a rough life. He started out training to be a show horse, but constantly threw his riders! They never checked to see WHY he was doing this, but every time he threw someone, they BEAT him! That's right folks, BEAT a young horse for wanting them off! Why did he throw them? 3/4's of the way down his back, where the end of the saddle dug, where the motion and weight of the rider ground in, is a bad disc. When they would force him to trot or run, the weight of the rider and the saddle would cause him pain, and he would react.

He went from stable to stable, and finally ended up at a slaughter facility! Winslow Sanctuary rescued him from this facility and have now been trying to calm his fear of people for the last 2 years. Nobody has been able to ride him. He has kicked and sent volunteers to the hospital. He just wanted to be left alone. He was scared, and now everyone was scared of him.

In September, I started volunteering at the farm and met Spirit. I could see how unhappy he was, how afraid he was, and above all, how LONELY he was. Even after I got a kick that only swiped my arm (I read his body language and saw it was coming, which saved my life). Even after all the warnings to keep away from him. I started building a trust and friendship with this horse. I am the only person who can brush his whole body, I am the only person who can comb his main and tail, I am the only person who can get him to stand long enough to braid his main and tail! Now, I am officially the only person who can ride him. He loves hugs, being sung to, and being called Baby Boy!

I soon am moving to South Carolina, and the owner of the farm has given him to me because of the bond I have created with this horse. He watches for me every morning, even on the days when I am not coming (which broke my heart to hear!!!). A little girls dream of owning a horse, a BUCKSKIN horse, has come true, and a horses dream of an understanding human being has come true too.

Come visit me, Dancing Spirit of the Wayward Winds & Thunder.
