How We Met

Bought him out of pity, even though skin and bones, there was just something about him, I couldn't resist when I stopped in to see him and he came over and put his head on my shoulder. Finally found Steven's Natural Horsemanship and everything finally started coming together for us. He is a Holstiener/Sadd- lebred/Morgan/? crossbred and is a lot of horse for an old lady to ride. fire ants hurt so bad, yes you must use lots of cream and benadryl. Off this weekend, and I will be taking Deacon and Rocket for their booster Flu/rino shot and get coggins pulled on them tomorrow morning. I can't see me riding this weekend, it is so HOT here. We will see. Cinnamon 270037 is running for Sept. HOTM, her mom asked me to let everyone know that information ♡

Come visit me, Whiskey ♥ & Deacon ♥.

Oh no, Cheryl, not fire ants. That had to hurt. Hope they aren't itching you to death. Construction zones and heavy traffic bringing out the crazy in people must not be a state wide thing. They don't slow down on the interstate for anything. A fiery chasm could open up in front of them and they would drive in at full tilt.
My solo ride went ok on Allie yesterday. Im working her fairly hard from the ground, and then riding easy, just walking and stopping, at least when I'm by myself. She is pretty lost off the rail, but the light bulb is starting to glow faintly that if she turns her head and follows her nose, I release the rein.
It's the same here, only reaching mid 90s, but so humid. I thought I was just being a wimp, but even the horses are coming up soaking wet. They truly looked like they had been hosed off yesterday afternoon (except for the top of their hindquarters). I feel so bad for them. Of course, I come in from feeding soaking wet too, almost like I've been swimming.
Well, headed off to work for my long day. Hope you have a good friday.
PS. I'm loving those Seresto collars. No fleas on the cats at all. I have one ordered for the indoor dog too.

Come visit me, Allie & BJ and his mom,Gracie.

As you know, Susie survived all her tragic incidents and accidents. Through it all she has been a real trooper. She is the biggest horse in the pasture, but she allows the other horses to boss her around. She does anything you ask of her. She is such a sweet and playful mare. I call Susie my “million dollar” horse. One because of all the time, effort and expense we have invested in her, but the second and main reason is because nobody has enough money to buy Susie. She is worth the world to me. She has found her forever home. She will live here at our pasture for as long as she is alive and she will be laid to rest next to dear sweet Lollipop, when her time ends. She has touched my heart in a way that I can’t explain. I hope she has touched yours in some way through her story. The End.~~~~
Our HOTM run has come to an end. I have enjoyed sharing Susie’s story with you. Thanks to all my HC friends for your support. (Left a big thank you vote)

November 1st Susie is home and once again she is confined to the barn. We are having to change her bandages every 3 to 5 days. This is getting to be a task. Also having to clean out the barn everyday, with her many piles of manure and wet areas. lol Susie was getting bored being confined, away from the herd. So on November 16th, my husband decided to let Susie out of the barn and put her in a small pen area. Well you know Susie…she was not content to be outside, she wanted to be with the herd. So she tried to jump the fence and managed to get her leg caught in the square fencing. Yes, it was her left rear leg. We brought her in, doctored her leg and bandaged it up. She had completely messed up the grafting process. She remained in the barn another 10 days. At this point the wound had pretty much healed but the hair had not regrown. We knew that this was the best we could hope for, so we removed her bandage and set her free.

oh, so glad you found some "mabyes" for your herd. sounds like Kisses is another herd boss if she kept everybody away from you.
Kathryn is going to be out of town from today till sunday, so after work yesterday, we went out and worked Allie. she just seems to need 2 people in the round pen, one as ground help, for now. i did some groundwork first and she got hot and tired (her idea, not mine) so when i got on, just walked around and practiced direction changes and one rein stops. she relaxed after a while and did really well. i don't want a whole week to go by before i ride her again, so i may go try a solo ride today. we'll see how it goes.
talked with my boss yesterday and told her of my need to cut my hours just a tiny bit, so im going to be doing 2 12 hr shifts a week. she said she needs the 3 pm-7pm covered better than it is right now, and i also will be doing some Saturdays, which will help the paycheck out. glad she's so easy to work with, and always has been.
well, hope you have a good thur. when will you be heading back up to Throwaway Ponies to look at the possibles? ugh, hate driving through construction zones, let alone in a truck and trailer. it'll be everybody else's job to stay out of your way. take care and good luck.

Hi Cisco, here's a vote for ya. Well another hot humid one today. Feels like was 96 with a real of 92 again. Started packing by 8 am and was done in about 90 minutes of loading bedding, hay and all the other major stuff. I was dripping wet in sweat! Gave Indy and Paige their show shaves and then did our Showmanship patterns in the indoor with Paige. Only stayed in there about 15 minutes and then back to the barn and 6 fans going! We'll be leaving about 10 am tomorrow, since it's only a 30 minute drive to the Fair Grounds. Hopefully beating out the thunder storms and getting all settled in. Will miss y'all and might list on FB if I have time. Love ya, Marion and the blondes.

In answer to the question as to what caused the proliferative lesion, not really sure. Not sure why she got pythium and the other horses at the same pasture didn't. They did say that her immune system could have played a part. The birth of her foal could have weakened her immune system and made her more susceptible to diseases. After all of this we did put her on a supplement for her immune system called Tri-Mune.~~~

The grafting process consisted of taking punch grafts from Susie’s left side of her neck underneath her mane. They took a total of 22 punch grafts and implanted them into the wound bed. Her leg was bandaged and they would wait five days before the bandage could be removed. Susie remained at LSU until October 31st. Halloween day she retuned home after a total of 17 days. Now the fun begins! lol (A click on the horseshoe)

Hi Cisco, here's a vote for ya. Well it was a hot humid one today. Heat index was at 95 degrees, straight up temp was 90! So Indy and Paige were both only lunged for 15 minutes, with every fan going in the indoor, plus the big 36 round fan by the one door way. So it wasn't all that bad in there out of the sun and humidity. Then I waited for the sun to move and shade the backside and northeast side and then I weed whacked all that down. Moved the trailer into the driveway closer to the garages and will start to pack it up tomorrow. Remembering to bring a ton of electrolytes for both the horses, dog and myself. Although the dog will be into the trailer almost 24/7 in the A/C! Lucky him! Love ya, Marion and the blondes.

Almost at the end of our HOTM run...yay! Keep the votes coming and thank you.~~~

Susie was going to have to return to LSU to have skin grafts done. The wound would not completely heal without having the grafts done. They needed the wound to start healing first and then after it reached a certain point, they were going to implant the skin grafts into the wound. She returned to LSU on October 15th. However the wound bed was not ready for the grafting, so she stayed there and on October 22nd they preceded with the grafting process. (Voted)

"Too hot to think" is a good way to put it. I know exactly what you mean, though it's not quite that hot here, thankfully.
Yeah, Madison isn't a morning person either. I figure I'll make her go to bed early and let her sleep as long as she wants. Meanwhile, I'll putz around and do stuff early on my days off. My sister homeschooled, so I'm always asking my niece questions from a student's point of view. If I remember right, TX and SC are the 2 most homeschool friendly states.
Kathryn helped me in the round pen yesterday, and it was much easier to get Allie to change direction. She still favored the right side, but with a ground person to redirect her, it wasn't a fight to get her to go left. After a bit, Allie relaxed and did much better. I think we're just going to have to use 2 people in there for a while until she gets the idea.
well, off to work. Hope you have a good tue.

My goodness! Horses are so smart. I've noticed that Sadie sometimes has what looks like dried drops of water on her back. Monday, she filled her mouth with water and tossed it on her back. How cool is it that she knows how to cool herself off? I don't know if this is something horses normally do, or if she was inspired by being hosed down or cooling off in the sprinkler. Just amazing! So thankful for the wonderful things we learn from our four legged loved ones. Love always and a vote.

Hi Cisco, here's a vote for ya. Got a lot of little things done today. Spread out 200 lbs of Mag/Cal in the indoor in the super dry and dusty areas, yes I have those, along with some still wet spots from that storm almost 2 weeks ago now! UGH! Well last night we had that storm, I don't think we've ever had lightning and thunder that lasted so long, it was well over two hours of it. And the rains finally came, heavy for a while too, I was worried about more seeping into the indoor on the low side, but all was well. Rain gauge said one inch. Today was major food shopping day and get all that's needed for our horse show this Thursday when we leave. Horses were out late in the afternoon, as it was very hot and humid earlier, then it seemed to drop in humidity and a nice breeze came in. Tomorrow it's back to riding and start to pack up the trailer. Love ya, Marion and the blondes.

The next day October 25th, a surgical excision of the lesion was done. Preliminary results were not consistent with pythium. However a culture was taken and sent off for testing. The initial diagnosis was an ulcerative and proliferative lesion on the lateral aspect of left rear pastern. After the surgery was done Susie remained at LSU for 9 days, where she was confined to a stall and her bandages changed every 3 days. She was sent home on October 2nd. We were told to keep her confined to her stall. However we separated the barn to give her two stalls and the middle isle, where we placed a round hay bale for her to eat. We also had to change her bandages every 3 days. This again was just like when she had her head wound. It is very difficult for someone, without any medical background, to apply these bandages. This bandage consisted of six steps (telfa pad, white cling gauze, cotton combine, brown gauze, vetwrap and elasticon). Try putting this on all while the horse is moving. lol Just lucky there were two of us working together. Susie seemed to be enjoying, once again being treated like a queen. Here's a vote.

Cisco is nearing his 6000th vote, wow. Thanks for the encouragement. I'm getting kind of excited about the things we're going to study. I'm hoping to make school apply to real life, like studying the Constitution and government, some good books in English, etc. Yes, I'm going to join the county home school association and the state legal homeschool assoc. so everything is legal. I've thought about doing some "back to school pajama" shopping, just for fun, lol. My daughter would probably love that. Did you find that keeping school in the mornings worked better, or did you do it later in the day?
didn't ride yesterday, it was just too hot after church. Kathryn went to visit her parents over the weekend and is coming home this morning, I'm hoping early enough that we can work Allie. I think she's going to need a few rides with someone helping on the ground to get her pointed toward the left so she can be turned and do one rein stops in both directions. I was encouraged that while spraying weeds under fence lines yesterday, Allie followed me around, even up in to the riding ring, so maybe she doesn't hold that last ride against me too much, lol.
well, hope you have a good monday and stay cool.

O.K. here comes Susie’s drama. It is October 24, 2012, only two months after Lollipop’s death. We bring Susie back to LSU. This time she has a lesion on her left rear pastern. We noticed it a couple of days before and decided this time we would go straight to LSU. We thought for sure that it was the pythium again, it looked just like the lesion on her head. We didn’t even bother to call a vet, we loaded her up and headed to LSU. We knew she would be in great hands. Left a vote.

Yeah, I'm scared I won't have the creativity or the time or the organization to do a good job, but I'll sure try. Now I need to talk to my boss about cutting my hours back a wee bit -save some money not making that tuition payment and need more time at home with Mattie. She's had a lot of people quit lately so she won't be overjoyed, but she's always been great to work with, thankfully.
Worked Allie yesterday morning. Not one of our better sessions, but it will hopefully iron out. Spent the afternoon repairing the electric fence around the dry lot and cleaning weeds off it and re-doing some of the wiring. When I finished, it sent just enough juice down the line to make BJ twitch an ear and get his neck off it, so something still isn't right but better than it was. Hmmmm
Well, hope you have a good sunday.

Hi Cisco, here's a vote for ya. So on Friday, I got Indy lunged and Paige ridden. Did a couple of other things. Got them turned out to pasture and took a nap! I knew the wedding at 6:30 pm would be a long night! But I held off on feeding till 5:30 and put me leaving about 6:10 pm. Missed the vows thing, glad for that. Cocktail hour with all the many tables of picken's was under way. I had my first in 25 years drink of a Toasted Almond. Took me two hours to finish it! LOL! Glad I filled up on the goodies at all the hot food stations. Cause for the main meal it was a choice of Filet Mengion, Salmon, or Chicken stuff with spinach and red peppers, since I don't do meat or fish, went with the chicken! Wish I could have had the kids meal of chicken fingers. Ate two bites and called it quits, horrible! The night dragged on, very slow in doing every thing! Cake cutting was at 10:30 pm, but with an open serving stations of all kinds of Italian deserts. Good thing, made up for missing my meal! LOL! Hardly anyone danced, DJ wasn't playing good tunes at all. Just wasn't a lively wedding party for sure! Felt so sorry for Eileen, the brides mother, she got stuck holding their kid all night long, and she too has bad back problems. Not right! Called it quits by 11 pm and had the 45 minute drive one. Checked the horses, let the dog out and thought I could pass out. Nope. Spent this morning making up for lost sleep. Nothing got done today. What a waste of a day! Horses did get out all afternoon to graze however. I'm not a night time person! No more weddings for me, I'm out of town! LOL! Love ya, Marion and the blondes.
