How We Met

Bought him out of pity, even though skin and bones, there was just something about him, I couldn't resist when I stopped in to see him and he came over and put his head on my shoulder. Finally found Steven's Natural Horsemanship and everything finally started coming together for us. He is a Holstiener/Sadd- lebred/Morgan/? crossbred and is a lot of horse for an old lady to ride. Hi & a Vote,
No horse time today. Blue the dog and two of the cats went to clinic for vaccines this morning. Then working more on the old house and packing. To visit my Mom with Blue at the Nursing Home, then back home to organize/unpack a little. Now too tired for anything else today!

Come visit me, Rocky (the blue-eyed wonder horse), Comet (has new home) & Cowboy (Thanks for HOTD 1/19/2017!).

I hope the TS passed and you could go. We were supposed to be in the 70's but its in the high 40's. Watched my nephew barrel race. Did really well. They were going through a rough patch, but I think they are out of the slump.

Has not been a good week here. It started last week. My not very smart neighbor tried cutting up a propane gas tank. (large) Like the kind you attach to a home. He didn't take the chemical that is used to make the smell for propane. So the whole neighborhood was evacuated. The fireman said my cats would be find. They are NOT. I am going to loose my Loki.I took him and Rifka to the vets. They both got IV's of fluids and antibiotics. Plus they put steroids in the IV. Rifka was just starting with the infection but Loki had a fever of 102. I take him back on Monday if he makes it. Not eating or drinking. Prayers Please. Vicki & Big Jax

Come visit me, Big Jax.

Aw, hate you had to cancel the clinic. I pulled up the radar out your way and that's a huge system stretching across the country. Hard to tell if it'll stay north of you or not.
Meanwhile, you're doing a fantastic job of groundwork at home. So excited you were able to send her into the trailer and she stood quietly in there. That's huge progress.
Not much here. I have some serious grass cutting I need to do, and would like to ride if I get the time. It's supposed to get to 90 today, can you believe.

NEAR THE END OF THE RUN...
As we approach the end of the month, I would ask that you take a moment, if you haven't already done so, to read the "How we Met" section of Mackie and Charlie's profile pages. It pretty much explains what happened next for my Mackie. I will never forget that day. Something was just not right, when Dr. Cook came out, it seemed he took a longer than usual amount of time to examine him, and when he told me to "put on my serious hat" I knew in my heart it was not good. So, I found myself at the Equine Hospital yet again. Sadly, I came home alone that day. Sterl May has been my rock, she builds strong bonds and she has also felt the pain of losing these two wonderful horses. We left a vote today, have a great weekend.

MACKIE NEVER GAVE UP....
After the treatments for EPM, he was coming along nicely, with the help of Stephanie on the ground I was more and more confident with him, we did a lot of lunging and pole work. He had a tiny episode of ulcer due to the meds, but hey, after what he had been thru that was nothing. He was building his muscles and getting back to regular work plus as you can see from the picture on his profile page, he looked great. That picture was taken about a month before he died. Have a great day, we left a vote.

I went to Tractor Supply, yesterday, because I needed more Freedom 45. They were out, so I bought Celebration Spot On. Don't think it's working well, because Sadie's swinging her tail around like a fan. The flies are pathetic this year. Equine fly spray doesn't help. The vaseline is helping Sissy. Just messy. Bought 2 fly trap bags. Putting those out, today. Dang egg ranch. Love and a vote.

TEST WAS POSITIVE..
Hi Cheryl, yes these are the condensed versions of the stories, please know that there were lots of great times with Mackie and of course, with Charlie too. I miss them both terrible, as Marion said, why the good one's? I have always said, if it wasn't for bad luck, I'd have no luck at all. The EPM test came back positive. That just means the horse has been exposed, and stats show that 70% of horses in our area are exposed. But protocol was if you have a positive test and symptoms, treat, so we did. Treatment was successful and as Dr. Cook said, just chill..recurranceses do happen but are not common. You guessed it, so another round of treatment. Even this was not the end of Mackie, he was a fighter, and such a willing partner. After the treatment, getting back to regular work was like starting all over again, they need to learn "muscle memory" basically re train their muscles to work the way they should. That was when I found Stephanie, she was my coach and eyes on the ground. I have to say I was nervous, because before the treatment aside from the stumbling Mackie fell, while I was riding, I did not want that to happen again. Life was good again, we left a vote today.

You sure have had a lot of wind and rain, for over a year too. That'll stink if it TS all day Saturday. And another cold front? Wow.
I saw our first HB yesterday. It looked at my feeder but didn't like it, for some reason. I'll need to take it down and change the food again today. But it was good to finally see one.
Also rode Allie, just at a walk since it's still damp and a little slick. I finally got holes punched so her breast collar fits and I used it for the first time. Of course, don't need it riding in the ring, but just getting her used to it. It's plain leather, so I'd like to get a few silver blings to add.
Well, have a good thursday.

Hi Cisco, here's a vote for ya. Well got the truck all hooked up and packed this morning. Let me tell ya, Honey is ready to go! OMG she's been going to the truck then the trailer, which one you want me in mom! Gave the boys some hay for lunch and then left with Marissa to go to the vet clinic and get the three boys all fixed up! Banjo was power float for his bad teeth. Cruiser and Bear were stifle injections and front fetlock joints also! They both will be ready to show then on Friday. Got home and turned Indy out in the baby pasture for like an hour of grass. Last he'll see of it till Monday. He'll be going in a dry lot with a hay rack with hay in it at Marissa's. Well thanks for all the good wishes for a good show. And we'll be back on HC Monday night! Love ya, Marion and the blondes.

Hi & a vote,
Rocky really doesn't mind the vet, however, he won't like getting his sheath done, and we have never been able to do that for him without sedation or Rocky will kick, kick, kick. Under sedation all he can do is spin his tail in circles until the process is done. Then all is forgiven quickly. He doesn't even care about the teeth being floated, as you think that would be worse.

The wind again, huh? Seems like it's been a theme this year, just unusually windy. And that sure messes up doing anything with the horses.
Not much going on here. My daughter's phone broke (again), so we'll be down at the phone store today. Would love to get on some unsuspecting equine today, but it depends on how muddy it is.
Well, hope you have a great hump-day.

MACKIE SETTLED IN VERY WELL..
It seemed like he had always been there, Sterl loved him and Jackie was a happy pony. Mackie was a nice ride, easy to rain, learned to canter very easily and we were starting little cross rail jumps. I guess what I noticed first, altho it was very subtle, he felt like he was unsure where to put his feet, and he stumbled a lot. I know, every horse will stumble, but this was a lot...first I had his farrier check him out, all good there. so it was a Dr. cook visit. After a physical exam and a neurological ground evaluation he drew blood to test for EPM...tomorrow's saga, we left a vote.

Hi Cisco, here's a vote for ya. Really glad that I got all I did done yesterday. Cause today was a wet one for sure! So I did house work to get the place vacumned and dusted before leaving. I hate housework! Boys got groomed and hay for lunch. Therapy this afternoon, after running to Harmon Drugstore for stock up items for the trailer. Then to therapy. Home and in the house, it was pouring out! Tomorrow morning I'll hookup the truck and trailer and pack just about everything else I need too. Just pray it's not raining. Then going with Marissa to the clinic with 3 horses. She has to pass by the place so I'll get picked up. Should only be about a 4 hour trip all totalled. Love ya, Marion and the blondes.

Go again Tuesday afternoon and that's it till I get back next week. Then have 4 more weeks 2 days a week. I really feel it helped 100%. Got home and got all the weed whacking done. Then broke for lunch. Then attacked the lawn and all around the indoor and back by the manure pile! All done, wish I could get those two unused pastures mowed, but not gonna happen now! So glad you had a good session with Sunset. Sounds like she's doing well. Be interesting to hear how she does with closing the trailer door. You're so gonna be ready to take her to the upcoming clinic.
Your Norther came east (minus the hail and TS, thank goodness). Just chilly and very very wet. Can't wait to check the rain gauge. Yes, you always feel relieved when bad weather misses you, but bad for the people who did get it. The horses were feeling their oats in the chilly wet weather, hence the action shots on their profiles. It had the opposite effect on me; I just wanted to nap, lol.

LET HIM GO...
Finally after 4 years of working and struggling with Bray, I decided that we just were not going to make it as a team. I started to hunt for a new horse for me and a great home for Bray. I settled on a young lady, she was likely an intermediate rider, BUT she would be boarding Bray at a large show barn, she had a coach and tons of support around her. I said my goodbyes. She kept me updated. She was enjoying him, however, three weeks after she got him, on a fresh slightly frosty morning he was turned out into his paddock, which was on a tiny bit of a slope. Apparently he was acting up, go figure...he took a bad step and they think he tore a patellar ligament (stifle). No one noticed his problem until he was brought in that evening, on three legs. Long story short, after consultation with 3 Vets, his prognosis was poor to hopeless, she was advised to let him go. She called me to tell me the news and asked if I'd like to be there, she said he was more my horse than hers. I declined, but I did go to say good bye one last time. We left a vote today.

Hi Cisco, here's a vote for ya. What a day, weather was great! Sunny and a high of 72 degrees! I did feel very bad that I wasn't home to get the boys out for pasture time however. And that Honey was alone for 7.5 hours, and didn't do anything wrong in the house at all! She's really a good pup! It was great to watch Laura ride Paige and do the horsemanship patterns with her, then they did some pleasure work, then the Ranch Riding pattern, which Paige is really good at. Then later on we did our showmanship patterns, mine is different from Laura's so I had to bad that half circle around the judge and got it perfect twice! Two for Two! Called it quits! Tomorrow early PT and then home and mow, mow and weed whack as much as I can! Rain for Tuesday, so it's gonna be a working day. Plus the boys will be out, they'll be happy! Love ya, Marion and the blondes.

Oh wow, it's wild how the horses can sense those fronts and storms coming. Glad that huge hail and TS stayed away from you.
The show was a blast. The weather was great, no one got hurt or fell off, and there was a pretty good turn-out, especially as some bigger shows with points and money were the same day and near-by. I posted some pics on FB from it.
Yeah, I actually do have a truck in sight, thanks for asking. My ex brother in law does body work and has a truck that's been in the shop getting engine stuff done to it. He's got it back and is painting it and then wants to drive it a few days to make sure it's running right before I go see it. I'm really hoping it'll work out. With all the scams and stuff out there, I feel better buying from someone I know. Several people asked me when I'm going to take a horse to one of these shows, and I can't wait. Plus, some of them trail ride, it'll be fun to hook up with them.
Well, we got some more rain last night, so still may not be able to ride. It's been over a week, what with one thing or another, but we're still happy to see rain. Hope you have a great sunday and get some horse time.

I REALLY TRIED..
I wanted it to work out with Bray, I sent him away for training, I had coaches come in, bottom line, the horse had my number and he knew I was afraid of him and he played it every time. I got to be NO FUN riding and riding is suppose to be fun. In the end, I decided that I really loved this horse, I just didn't like him much. David didn't like him from day one. What I didn't pick up on until much later was, Sterl May didn't trust him. Look at all the pictures of the three of them together, Sterl May is ALWAYS between Bray and Jackie. I should have listened to her...live and learn I guess, have a great day. we left a vote.
