How We Met

Must have been the blue eyes!
We were going to visit some friends and passed a farm with a sign "Horses for Sale". We just had to take a look! When we saw Rocky, that was it!

Rocky is our 1st horse and he's been so much fun over the years from my daughter trying to ride him in English beginner shows (jumping talent zero) to Western and trail riding for me, which he prefers! He's been in a parade once and given lots of pony rides over the years. Other various experience includes vaulting horse, Dress-up Halloween shows, fun shows, summer camp... We took him to several County fair western shows just for fun too.

Nowadays, semi-retired due to navicular issues. Light riding only on trail loop or in pasture.

We received 1 ¾” of rain last night-the wind was unbelievable!!! I had to go and get feed and grocery’s yesterday and by the time we were finished it was too hot to ride. I did get fly stuff on the boys and checked the fly mask and then just watched them graze for the evening! Working the weekend but will try to do something with them after work but it will be to muddy to ride. Here is our finial tidbit on the Fabulous Rocky Mountain Horse Breed!
*TOBE was used for breeding until July of his thirty-fourth year, and he passed on his gait, disposition, and other great qualities to his offspring. It has been said that TOBE's progeny followed in his "perfectly-timed" footsteps. TOBE sired many fine horses before his death at the ripe old age of thirty-seven. One outstanding trait passed on was longevity, as many of his offspring were still breeding into their late twenties and early thirties.
Thank you for your support we appreciate it!

Thank you for voting for Whiskey while I was unavailable the last few days. Whiskey sends you all double loves and hugs ♥ I am actually off work tomorrow and back the weekend!
* In the early 1960s, Sam Tuttle managed the trail riding concession at the Natural Bridge State Park in Powell County, Kentucky. He had as many as fifty horses there, including TOBE. This stallion was often seen tied to the hitching post alongside all the mares. He became quite well known in the ten or so years he was ridden there. Besides breeding, TOBE was used as a trail horse. He carried Sam, and sometimes the trail guides who worked for Sam, with sure-footed ease over mountainous terrain for many years. Although Sam would allow other people to ride TOBE occasionally, it was always a ride closely supervised. He loved to show off his beloved stallion, but also kept a close eye on him. Everyone who rode TOBE enjoyed his gentle temperament and comfortable gait. It amazed people to think the well-mannered horse they were riding was indeed a breeding stallion.

* Even through the hard times of the Depression and World War II years, Sam Tuttle kept a sizable herd of thirty to forty horses on his farm. Sam is considered as the man most responsible for the survival of the Rocky Mountain Horse. TOBE was the primary Rocky Mountain stallion used in Sam's breeding program. In the 1950s, many people were selling their stallions, and the horse population in general was rapidly declining due to tractors and farm machinery available. Even so, breeders remembered TOBE, and he was always in demand for stud service. People brought their mares to TOBE from several different states, and he was as famous in Estill County as MAN O' WAR was in Lexington, Kentucky. Everyone who rode TOBE fell in love with him. TOBE's offspring were always in demand, and Sam never had any trouble selling all the Rocky Mountain Horses he could produce.

I took the fly masks off the horse’s yesterday evening. Whiskey rolled and really rubbed his head in the mud~silly boy. SO I went ahead and took off Deacon’s and Rocket’s. The flys are not as bad right now and I can say that won’t last long as we dry out from this last few days of rain. Have a wonderful day ♡
*Sam Tuttle was the most prominent breeder of Rocky Mountain Horses for the first three quarters of the twentieth century. With the advent of better roads and means of travel, the population of gaited horses in the United States began to decline. The exception was the less developed area of the Appalachian Mountains. Gaited horses were still needed for travel where there were no roads, and therefore they were preserved in that area.

We have received 3” of rain with this Hurricane Bill. It is going to rain through Thursday evening. We are wet and soggy for sure…..the boys are looking a little muddy they love it thought!!!
*The Rocky Mountain Horse Association's (RMHA) rendition of the history of the breed states there was a gaited colt brought from the Rocky Mountain region of the United States to the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains in eastern Kentucky around 1890. He was referred to as "the Rocky Mountain Horse" by the local Kentucky people because of the area of the country from which he had come. He is the horse credited for the start of the Rocky Mountain Horse breed. Little is known about this foundation stallion, but oral history indicated he was chocolate-colored with flaxen mane and tail, and he possessed a superior gait. The stallion was bred to the local Appalachian saddle mares in a relatively small geographical area and the basic characteristics of a strong genetic line continued. This prized line of horses increased in numbers as years went by, and these are the horses known today as Rocky Mountain Horses.

I am off work tomorrow so I will phone vote as many as possible. We had a light shower yesterday evening which we needed. It freshened up the grass it was getting pretty dry. I just need the rain not to fill our lakes and streams like it did a few weeks ago! Mccown at Lake Whitney is still not open. Have a wonderful day ♡
*The families of eastern Kentucky who owned these horses were not wealthy and could not afford to spend a lot of money on the upkeep of their horses. Unlike Kentucky Thoroughbreds that were typically owned by wealthy people, the gaited horses of eastern Kentucky received no special care, and as a result, most of the weak ones did not survive. These horses withstood the harsh winters of eastern Kentucky with minimal shelter, and they were often fed "fodder", a kind of rough silage. Some had to exist on whatever sustenance they could find. So, like deer, they ate the bark off trees when they were hungry. Only the horses that survived these extreme conditions lived to reproduce their kind.

✞ Whiskey has a fast walk that is like the true gait of a Rocky Mountain but it isn’t as pronounced like the other RM horses I see, it’s a little different. He has the smoothest gallop and run. He has the energy to go go go. He will go no matter how long you want to ride-his battery never seems to run out but that is the breed, again they started out as a utility horse!! Whiskey stays to himself; he doesn’t really hang with the other 2, only once in a while. Deacon picks him as a favorite for a day or 2 then they separate and Rocket is Deacons main herd mate. * During the late 1800s and early 1900s, the rural inhabitants of eastern Kentucky considered these saddle horses to be horses for all seasons. They were sure-footed, easy-gaited, and the mount of choice for postmen, doctors, and traveling preachers. People used them for plowing small fields, herding cattle, traveling through the steep and rugged trails, and driving the buggy to church on Sunday. Horses were not a luxury, but a necessity. Every horse had to earn its keep and be extremely versatile. It was not a matter of having horses around to use every once in a while; these horses were worked hard, every day. At the end of the day they were exhausted, but possessed enough stamina to continue on, day after day.
Thank you for your support we appreciate it!

Whiskey’s mane & tail change colors several times in the year by going lighter then darker. His body color changes as well. He truly loves his bath time and grooming, he trailers well in any type I load him in, and will load without heisting at all. He is also my bareback horse. Perfect back for it so if I don’t feel like putting the saddle on I can always just get myself up on him and go at any time. He is the type that will come to you every time from the field or anywhere. I guess that’s the treat hound in him lol.
* The Rocky Mountain Horse breed originated in the United States in the late 1800s, in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains of eastern Kentucky. At the time of its beginnings, there was no understanding of the need to document anything about these horses. The people living in this region were quite unaware that one day their utility horses would become the foundation of a special breed of horse. The existence of these horses was practically a secret for many years to all but the inhabitants of this region.
Thank you for your support we appreciate it!

My Whiskey boy has the antics of a comedian! He is so funny but yet so very gentle and lovable. He is in fact my “treat Hound”. He will do absolutely anything in the world to get a treat, cookie or carrot or anything to eat. If you show him how to do something and he knows you are going to give a treat he will try until he learns it to in fact get that treat. I have had so much fun with him. He will check me for a treat and if I don’t have one he will almost shrug me off with a turned head tossed in the air as if he is saying “I’m done with you, off you go child” .
* The history of the Rocky Mountain Horse from 1890 to the latter part of the 1900s carries little or no documentation and few facts that can be proven beyond the shadow of doubt. Everyone who personally witnessed the breed's beginnings (back to the 1800s) is deceased, and we have been left with only verbal history passed down from generation to generation. Thus, all that can be recorded at this point in time are the stories recollected by living descendants. Thank you for your support we appreciate it!

so happy the fever has not returned, that is GREAT news :) I continue to work with Whiskey and every now and then I still put the O ring on him and to keep him sharp. He really does well each time we ride. I am not all that good with all kinds of bits. I have not mastered the bit world-well, probably not a lot of horse things but I am on my journey and heading that way. I can ride Whiskey & Deacon both with just halters on but have never tired bridle-less yet but that is another goal of mine. The more we rode the better Whiskey got at reining. The more miles and trails the easier it got on me and him. I discovered Whiskey loves the water. We can get in a few minutes but I have to move him out or he will try to lie down, but I can take him right back in and then he settles to stand, doesn’t swim yet with me. We are still working toward that. Thank you for your support we appreciate it!

I hate ticks! Most will not hurt ya, but those couple of ones that can are deadly!!!! Glad you caught it and have him on meds :) Few things about Whiskey: The 1st few times I rode Whiskey my arms were wore out and tired. I was thinking “man what in the world”. He did not and could not Neck rein. He was very hard in the mouth, no flex in his neck but Karla & Tim told me he needed that kind of work. Tim felt he didn’t ride him in collection and so on. He was Tim’s first horse. We would get under the canopy of the trees on the trails and he would do great with my seat aids which I was happy about. That is how I ride him, with my seat and leg aids. I guess we all are supposed to do that RIGHT!!!! I then started planning my next few months of teaching him to neck rein. I just went back to the beginning and put him in an “O” ring snaffle and took it from there. Every day his personality would shine and he entertained Cliff & me with his antics! Thank you for your support we appreciate it!

it is wonderful that you can get a ride on Rocky now and then. I still haven't gotten the boots for my Whiskey yet! We had a nice weekend and hope you all did as well. Lizzy came over Saturday and rode Rocket and then she gave him the full grooming experience and I did the same with Whiskey. I had a 30 minute short workout for Deacon on Sunday morning then went to Tractor Supply for feed and the grocery store. Every other weekend I am not around a computer so I will phone vote as many as possible, also 1 x a week that I will phone vote :) * Rocky Mountain Horses are slow to mature and do not reach their full size and weight until about five to six years of age. Generally healthy horses, they often live long lives but do have a tendency to be extremely "easy keepers". Care must be taken to keep your Rockies from becoming too overweight, particularly in their later years.* Thank you for your support we appreciate it!

Hi Rocky, here's a vote for ya. Thank you to all that helped with voting daily for Angel H.T., he's our new HOTM and Indy was very happy to turn the crown over to his late brother. In my over 7 years on HC, I can't remember anyone winning three crowns in a row with their herd! I feel honored to be the first in this Triple Crown winning! And as an added bonus, Paige went HOTD! She was elated too about that and all the extra treats today. AS I think about this right now, it's so strange for the fact that Paige lives in H.T.'s old stall! Good vibes going on in that stall today. Heavy storms and rains again last night, 2 1/4 inches of rain in like less than 2 hours! Heavy duty thunder and lightning, knocked my dish network out and everything. Rain, mostly drizzle all day today. Hopefully it's helping all the farmers crops and my hay field out back.
Thanks for the up date about the nodules on my Thyroid, yes they said that when I make the appointment with the Endocrinologist, that's probably what he'll do. Monitor them every 6 months. Going to get the CD from the Imaging place tomorrow and take it to my Lung Doctor and let him look at it also.

Hi Rocky, here's a vote for ya. Thank you so much for your support. Here's hoping for a win! Well, woke up to rain, on and off, then it cleared up, just overcast. So about 12:30 I went to start with the horses and ride. Got Indy done and while I was riding in the indoor, it came across the radio of a severe thunder storm with dangerous lightning and heavy winds and rain and hail moving in about 1:45. So I finished Indy, and started to get Paige ready. It didn't look like it was going to happen. Just as we were ready to walk out the barn to the indoor, bam first clap of thunder almost over head. Out of no where! I crossed tied her and went and closed all the doors to the indoor and shut the radio off, but the time I was 75 feet from the barn, it came down like crazy! Lightning right almost over head. Got in the barn, un-tacked Paige and said looks like you get the day off! Posted a video on FB. But it only lasted about 20 minutes, but had some amount of water come down, so I scraped the idea of riding. They said more storms moving in. Didn't want to chance the lightning and thunder, even if I was in the indoor! I'll ride her tomorrow if it's not storming. Marion and the blondes.

Hi Rocky, here's a vote for ya. Got my results of the Ultrasound, they found some nodules on the right side of the Thyroid. Have to see an Endocrinologist. Hope it's something they can fix with drugs, I'm allergic to anesthesia! Well it was sunny and a cool breeze to start out. Then got hazy, hot and humid, like 89 degrees even up here on the mountain! Knowing that we're going to get rain for a couple of days, I didn't ride today. Had to run to town and get grain for Indy and Paige. Then got them out for their pasture time. Then weed whacked and mowed 3 pastures! This way all the tall weeds are down and with the rain, hopefully it'll come in nice green grass, a little thicker I hope! Figured since rain for Sunday and Monday, I can hide in the indoor and ride all I want! LOL! Marion and the blondes.

after this morning we are sappose to have a drying trend for 7-10 dyas. We sure need it!
Whinnies, hugs~ I have missed HC and a regular computer to type with instead of my phone. After posting my note on 5/22/15 about my vacation with the horses that afternoon I received an emergency phone call from my oldest sister in Montana about my other sister that has MS. She was in the hospital and was catatonic and non-responsive. They actually thought she wouldn’t pull through. Cliff and I grabbed our stuff and took off that way. Needless to say it was a long drive. Around the middle of South Dakota it got really pretty all the way to Montana. We were in Glasgow about 50 miles from Canada. The wild life I saw was incredible to say the least…what beauty but I can say I could never live that way-way up there! My sister did pull through and is fine now but it sure did scare me. Lizzy and I were going to ride at the lake yesterday but she got there before me and called-she told me to turn around and go home-I’m like WHY? It was shut down due to high water. Storming here this morning then it is to clear off for a week! Have an awesome weekend ☆

Hi Rocky, here's a vote for ya. Well it started out cool and sunny, but sure did warm up to 83 degrees fast! Had to have all the ceiling fans and doorway fans on in the indoor when I rode Paige. Got to lunge Indy and the lunged and rode Paige. Back feels about 85% better and I really need to keep her tuned up. The turned them out for a while. After I got them in, I weed whacked and mowed Indy's pasture. Grass isn't that high, but the weed thingies are! Sucked them up in the rear bagger on the machine. Marion and the blondes.

Hi Rocky, here's a vote for ya. Got the blood work up back today for the Thyroid, that was fine. But I still feel like my throat is swollen and when you palpate the Thyroid area it hurts, hence the Ultrasound. Should have the results by tomorrow afternoon. Well my back is still a little sketchie, so I didn't ride or do anything to really aggravate it! Lunge both Indy and Paige, then did some showmanship work with Paige. It was looking like a storm might be brewing, so I got them out for like 90 minutes and back in. But nothing so far today. It's been warm, but a really good breeze blowing, so doors and windows open and fresh air in the house. No A/C, yay! Marion and the blondes.

Got home about 2 pm and it was looking like storms moving in, so I turned them out for pasture time. I could always get them in fast if needed. They needed some grass to munch on, they told me so! LOL! Yep, got them in just in time. High winds and heavy rain, lasted about 20 minutes, dropped the temps like 16 degrees in that short time. Of course Paige wasn't as lucky, she got worked, and since it was really hot, and even with the ceiling fans on in the indoor, it still was warm. So then she got a bath too! Never did get to start body clipping my donkey, it was so hot in the barn and I was sweating so bad, I would have had all his hair glued to me! So I'll wait for a cool day, this way all the fans in there don't blow his hair around and on me. Don't need a major asthma attack over it. Hit 88 today! Hi Rocky, here's a Memorial Day vote for ya. Hope that you took time to bow your head and pray for those that gave their lives for us, and those that are still fighting for us! Great day today, temps were really hot, made it to 86 degrees, but we had our nice breeze. Good news, no great news, Ole'Blue was sold this morning! They loved it, her son and grandson were in awe of how good it drove and the power to the engine! Clutch passed all the tests he put it through! So it was a cash deal! Love cash, was a little scared driving home with that much on me, but only had to go less than 6 miles. To the bank in the am! Went to a BBQ for a while today. Made it a day of rest! Kids were out later this afternoon and yes, Bullseye got his bath! Let the body clipping begin! LOL! Marion and the blondes.

Hi Rocky, here's a vote for ya. Well another 42 degree morning and a high of about 68 with sunshine, so it felt really good in the afternoon. Woman I'm selling my English saddle too texted me this morning and now she'll be here Sunday morning instead. Just please show up and buy it! Got Indy lunged and lunged Paige and did a showmanship lesson with her. She was really on today! Then went to a friends for about an hour for a BBQ. Had to get home and let the horses out on this beautiful day, they are really loving their pasture time. Then weed whacked around the interior of the outdoor arena and mowed the perimeter and got the front lawn mowed. Will do the back yard tomorrow. Needed to come in and rest a little. Going down to low 40's again tonight, but they say tomorrow will be near 80 degrees, go figure! Bath time for Bullseye, dirty donkey! LOL! Marion and the blondes.

Hi Rocky, here's a vote for ya. Glad that they got their pedicure today. Don't ya just love how nice their feet look when just trimmed all up. Well was 47 this morning with a high of 70 today. But tonight dropping down to about 38 they say! No riding time today. Had that complete physical to go for at the union medical center. Three hours driving time alone! Plus time there and then time waiting for a couple of scripts to be filled at the pharmacy killed most of the early afternoon. Got home like 2:30. Kendra that takes care of Bullseye when I'm showing came up for old nasty hay to cover their new lawn area. Spent time shooting the breeze. Then turned out the kids for over an hour on pasture, they're getting up there on more time out now. Then weed whacked all around the entire property and fence lines. Killed the day! LOL! Marion and the blondes.

Hi Rocky, here's a vote for ya. Tell him it's cheaper than therapy and drugs to keep you sane! LOL! Well at least it stayed above 40 this morning, 43 is better than the 37 they were calling for. But it never even hit 60 today, and it was overcast! So another kinda chilly nasty day. But I did get both Indy Lunged and Paige ridden. Then they went out, with sheets on of course, gotta keep those show coats from blowing out! Then weed whacked two pastures and around the indoor. Then mowed those two smaller pastures and didn't have a jacket on, by the time I finished I had goosebumps going on! LOL! Sure hope spring returns soon! LOL! Marion and the blondes.

Hi Rocky, here's a vote for ya. Had the farrier this morning for new shoes on Paige and he check Indy's trim, Indy was done down at the show and he just wanted to touch him up, and for free! That was nice of him. Then I kinda hibernated in the house for a while, it was 51 this morning and a windchill of 43, never got above 55 with winds. So kids were in the indoor for work and then hay in the barn. I did mow another pasture and two more sides of the indoor arena. Buy then I had windburn on my face and said time to hit the house. I cleaned my English saddle up, as it's sold and leaving on Saturday! Yay! Going down to 37 tonight, winter's back! Marion and the blondes.

Hi Rocky, here's a vote for ya. Thank you for being a loyal voter in my quest for HOTM, Indy~! Well woke up to the rains, but it all stopped by 9 am and got sunny and humid, but that did dry it up. Got ole'blue down to Jimmy's today, so hopefully it'll sell over the weekend! Came home and only lunged them, it was so hot and humid, in less than 20 minutes they each were soak'n'wet! Then hosed them off and turned them out, up to almost a full hour now of grass/pasture time. Then mowed one pasture and one side of the indoor arena. Tomorrow my farrier is coming in the am to do Paige. Then it's hopefully ride, supposed to only be about 64 degrees tomorrow. Then mow another pasture and the other 3 sides of the indoor. Love working outdoors now! Not like in the winter, freezing my vocal cords off! Marion and the blondes.

Hi Rocky, here's a vote for ya. Sounds like a couple of great lectures at the equine fair. I love going to them as well, you learn so much! Well it was overcast and cold and damp all day. So the only two things that really got done were the cleaning out of ole'blue and the chiropractor with food shopping at Wally World after it. Temps didn't get about 60 degrees today, very raw out there. I wanted to mow two pastures, but they stayed wet from the overnight dew! Rain and thunder storms for all day Tuesday! I have to go downtown and pick up Jimmy, that's who's lot the truck is going for sale on. He's hoping that with all the traffic passing on Memorial Day weekend going up to the camp grounds, someone will say, hey there's a nice truck for towing this big camper of ours! LOL! And it'll be gone! It served me will for almost 13 years! Marion and the blondes.

Hi Rocky, here's a vote for ya. Thank you so much for supporting H.T. in his quest for HOTM! Well another chilly start to the day, 39 degrees, did hit 70 again today. Dragged the outdoor and indoor arenas and then picked rock. Mostly from the outdoor arena, they seem to surface after the winter frost! Worked Indy and then Rode Paige. I set up the flower boxes by the walk overs. First one to see them was Indy, walks in the indoor, head goes up and he's like WTH! Took him down there, first he snorts, then he makes friends and of course tried to eat the fake flowers. Everything was cool then. Bring in Paige, level head set, ears forward and she wants to walk down there, slowly we go, she drops her head and looks and says, yeah so what! Had her walking the poles and she never cared. Video on FB if you want to check it out. Then everyone got turned out in their pastures. Sun was still out at that point. I mowed the upper pasture and the back yard, since they are forecasting rain for Saturday. And of course, I have those tickets I won for the Rodeo in town. Guess I'm gonna get wet! LOL! Marion and the blondes.
