How We Met

Must have been the blue eyes!
We were going to visit some friends and passed a farm with a sign "Horses for Sale". We just had to take a look! When we saw Rocky, that was it!

Rocky is our 1st horse and he's been so much fun over the years from my daughter trying to ride him in English beginner shows (jumping talent zero) to Western and trail riding for me, which he prefers! He's been in a parade once and given lots of pony rides over the years. Other various experience includes vaulting horse, Dress-up Halloween shows, fun shows, summer camp... We took him to several County fair western shows just for fun too.

Nowadays, semi-retired due to navicular issues. Light riding only on trail loop or in pasture.

Rocky is a "Medicine Hat" paint horse. Medicine Hat is the name applied to horses exhibiting a unique and rare pattern of color. Being mostly white in body, Medicine Hats have color on their ears and top of the head, which resembles a bonnet or hat. Color on the chest is termed a shield. Medicine Hats often have pink muzzles, and those with one or more blue eyes were especially prized.
Medicine horses blue eyes were often called Sky-eyes or Heaven-eyes and added to the mystique which surrounded them.

Goodness, 3 teeth? You just don't think of cats having that problem. Did his breath smell pretty bad? That was one of the symptoms my friend's cat had. Glad that's behind him and hope he's feeling like himself soon.
That's great that she is enjoying the extra ride time and going to clinics and trail rides. Sounds like she's really doing a variety of things with Cowboy, keeping it fun for the both of them.
We wound up with just under 1/2 inch of rain. Any time it's measurable in the rain gauge, I'm happy. It was too muddy and windy to ride, but I finished trimming Gracie's hinds and also trimmed Cinni's feet. Gracie hadn't grown much foot since last time, but Cinni always grows a lot.
Madison will definitely donate her hair to Locks of Love. Unfortunately, right as we were walking out the door, got a text from the hairdresser that she was going home sick and had to reschedule, so Madison was pretty bummed.
Well, hope you have a great wednesday.

Listening to the Pet Dr. on Wis Public Radio today and was thinking of Daniel. Hope he is not in too much pain. Hope the vet does not charge like our dentist does.
Chicken love to eat the snow off my boots. And we got plenty of snow since yesterday, but hard to say how much, I have 3 foot drifts, and other spots bare. One drift is past the doorknob of the chicken coop. News report, (local) said 10-12 inches...I just know all my trails are gone, and banged my head 2 times while in the geese/duck pen, because snow is getting deep inside.
Did more sorting out, but looks like I just created a bigger mess, trying to get all my charms, chains, and stuff to make hemp jewerly all organized. Lots of beads.

Hi Rocky, here's a vote for ya. Sending speedy recovery prayers for Daniel! How about the weather today! NOT! What a mixed up weather day today. Super heavy rains all morning, about 1.5 inches worth! Then by noon time the sky's blue and sunshine! But it was slick mud on top of frozen ground, and I wasn't going to try and walk them down the side of the barn to the indoor! So Paige got her tail washed in a bucket of water, she's so good, I was resting the bucket against her hocks, she didn't care! Indy got a grooming. The they got lunch of hay and fresh water. So since it was like 55 degrees and sunny, Honey and I went for a little over a mile walk. Of course when we were about the last 1000 feet home, they sky started to turn black and the winds picked up! Yep sure enough more heavy rains and wind for the next few hours! Going down to about 28 tonight, should be an ice skating rink tomorrow morning! Marion and the blondes.

How is the flooding in your area? Not sure close you are.
It didn't get as warm as they said it would yesterday. Ice everywhere. I did take Jax to the arena. He was really good walking on the ice. I kept saying "easy boy easy". He can be a fast walker, but he knew. In the arena he was running and bucking. He bucked so high I told him you better not put your back out. Glad he doesn't do that when I'm on him. It is pouring here. Streets are flooding and they have warnings by the docks. The creek behind my home you can see pieces of ice floating by. I shouldn't have anything to worry about. Only streets I drive on. My concern "we are going from high 50's to 29 by morning. With all this melting, more ice. I so would take snow over ice. Vicki & Big Jax

Hope you didn't get too much rain and hope it wasn't frozen in one form or another.
We finally got some decent rain last night, don't know how much until I look at the rain gague this am, but I'm grateful for it. Yesterday was spent on the road with errands, so I didn't get to ride, and today will probably be too muddy. But I do need to finish Gracie's trim and maybe start Cinni's. It's a big day for my daughter; she's getting her waist-length hair cut short. It's taken her months to get up the nerve and decide on a style, but she's ready to be done with the length getting in her way.

Yep, came home with some wooden spoons which I already had ideas of painting them up and making them look like flowers with faces and glue on petals of some sort. Took down my tree and Christmas decorations today. I like leaving some of the "winter looking stuff" up.
That winter storm had lots and lots of chances to miss us, was calling for it to start 10 pm "last" night, didn't start until 10:30 this morning, but we did get dumped on about 8-9 inches, but hard to be sure because the winds are still blowing, at least 3ft right in front of the chicken coop door. which the chickens loved, because as soon as I did get the door open, they all ran to eat the snow, not sure why I bother with carrying water to them. They must believe me when I tell them it is "ice cream". Drifts are bad, and could not even see the barn most of the afternoon, by tomorrow it should be better.

Hi Rocky, here's a vote for ya. Well misty, drizzle and just a nasty dreary day out there! And it didn't get all that warm, so the ice is still there and it's like walking on a land mine field, you never know where it's gonna take ya out! So needless to say horses didn't get to the indoor, I might have been able too, but didn't want to chance me going down and winding up under one of them! But I did forge through and take Honey for a walk down the road, just ugly out, but we did it! We both needed the exercise! Working on dropping that Holiday weight! LOL! Now tomorrow it's rain for sure all day long, but they say we could get to the high 40's before starting the plunge again! Marion and the blondes.

Sounds like a fun ride!

Weather here is great! Temps will drop a little in the next couple days but nothing drastic. We are all doing well. Have been worried about my daughter recently. Don't think I mentioned that she started a new career as a first responder. She is a EMT with an ambulance company here. She has been working since Thanksgiving. With all this crazy weather and the crazy hours she works, I get pretty worried. She is doing great though. Hope you all enjoy your week. Have a blessed day.

Yay, so glad you did get to ride. Bet you had a blast, the dogs sure did.
This winter has been unusually cold, as it has everywhere. This week is more normal temps. But yes, we ride year round down here though there aren't quite as many shows and events dec-feb. It really wasn't until joining HC that I realized horse folks up north can only ride 4 or 5 months out of the year. I'd go bananas. Hope your daughter can take advantage of the extended riding opportunities and have a lot of fun.
We had another glorious day of sunshine and 60. After church and lunch, I went out and trimmed Gracie's fronts and then rode Allie. We did some loping and trotting, and weaved in and out of cones. She didn't really have the concept of weaving, so we just did that at a walk and hoped no one was watching, lol.
Well, hope your monday is good despite the weather. Take care.

Nice you got to ride. I didn't. We have to much ice under the snow here. The winds were awful here on Saturday. Went out to turn him loose in the arena but with the warmth and the winds knew it was a bad combination. (snow coming off the roof)So a good grooming and spoiling. :) I also dug a trench for drainage by the barn door. Snow was melting really fast off the tin roof. Then I went out to dinner for Sarah's birthday dinner. Mexican food and it was good. Today I had a meeting at noon for our Equine club. Went to barn and cleaned Jax stall. Cleaned his water buckets. If we get the freezing rain tomorrow then downpour of rain on Tuesday, the horses will be in for a while. Vicki & Big Jax

Hi Rocky, here's a vote for ya. So is this a high test of agility for Blue now? Glad that you were able to get a ride in, I used to love riding in the snow! Not so much anymore, they have summer coats and I can't stay warm enough! LOL! Well we got up to 46 degrees with sunshine till about 2 pm. So it melted off more of this white stuff! But now it's muddy on top of frozen ground, so interesting to walk on for sure! Slip sliding away! Took another wheel barrel of 3 bales down to the barn, so we're okay with the rain moving in for Mon and Tues. Actually was able to lunge them naked today for the first time in a while! Paige and Indy got lunged inside. Bullseye got turned out in the front pasture in hopes of rolling in the snow! NOPE! Then gave them fresh water and hay for lunch. Honey and I did a walk again, almost a mile. Then it was the first football game of the two. Oh well, Jags lost to Pats! DAMN! Hoping that the Eagles win the night time game. Marion and the blondes.

How has your weekend shaped up? Have you been able to go out to the barn at all? How is your daughter liking Ga?
We made it to the low 60s yesterday, can you believe? (I was actually working in a tee shirt!) Beautiful day! All the snow is melted now. I worked on fence repairs; got a ton more to do, but every little bit helps. It's slow going working alone and by hand. I rode Allie out in the pasture and she did okay. All her friends were hanging out in the riding ring, so of course, we did most of the ride up by that fence, which isn't what I planned. It's still a bit muddy so we stayed at a walk again. She's getting pretty good at taking one step around in both directions, and when she's really consistent at it, I'll start adding steps, see if she'll kinda spin one day.
Well, hope you have a great sunday.

Hi Rocky, here's a vote for ya. Well busy day again today! Took two loads of hay to the barn, only can fit 3 bales on the wheel barrel at once. Then Erin came over to pick up the newspapers for the clinic and of course played with Honey. After that I went to the barn and at first let Paige lose to run and play! Nope, went and stood by the mirror looking at herself! So had to lunge her, then did a few minutes of showmanship backing and spins. Next was Indy, he got lunged today and then we practiced setting up for halter, he remembered! Then Bullseye went out in the front pasture, I was hoping he'd roll in the snow and clean himself off, but no! Gave them lunch of hay and fresh water. Honey and I then did a mile walk, road sides were wet with salt, so we walked in the middle and moved when cars came. Thank goodness it was a quiet day on the traffic! Marion and the blondes.

Oh, I hope it warms up enough for you to get some barn time this weekend.
How is the new agility class coming?
Oh, so Daniel hasn't had his tooth out yet? Hope that goes well. My friend's cat was pretty drunk and sleepy that whole first day when he had his out, but is doing well since. Good luck to Daniel.
We had a beautiful sunny calm day that got up to, I don't know, probably high 50s. So I worked my tail off burning a big brush pile I've been adding to for 2 years and pruning limbs and saplings that have needed cutting. I was bone tired by the afternoon, but with a change of footware, was able to keep going long enough to ride Allie. We just stayed at a walk and practiced the slower stuff and she did really well. She stayed real soft in the bosal, didn't even have to make contact every time I picked a rein up, yay.

Heard on the radio temps were to be near 40, see 34 here, sun made it seem warmer. Did alot of house cleaning, went to get Dominic at 3;30 from school. He will be a big help tomorrow. Funeral for Mike's "sort" of cousin, tomorrow. He will try to make it to the viewing before serves, mostly to talk to family....his brother is related but Mike isn't. Have everything wrapped for tomorrow. Because Joe has to work later in the afternoon, people will not stay to long. We will go to Mass in the morning and take Dominic home. Hi Rocky, here's a vote for ya. I know, I can't wait for 40 degree days! It'll be like swimming weather to us! LOL! Well started out at 08 degrees and made it up to 36 up here on the mountain top! Sun didn't come out till about 2:30 pm, but then it warmed up some of the ice and I chopped it out of the driveway and by the barn! Ran a lot of errands this morning. Even took Beast to the coin truck wash and got all the road salts off her! Picked up grain for Indy, Alfalfa pellets for Paige and lot's of dog food for Honey! Got Paige lunged and did 5 minutes of showmanship. Then free lunged Indy and Bullseye. Gave them fresh water and hay for lunch and finally at 2:45 got to have my lunch. Then Honey wanted out, so we went and she ran and ran in the snow! She's such a little nut case in the fresh soft snow! Love that pup! Marion and the blondes.

Glad to hear you cat is doing better. Our Old Kitty (at least early teens is improving slowly. It has been cold here since last Thurs. Tuesday was the worst. Got a bit of sleet Mon night with a dusting of snow, with the WC the temp here was around zero. Old Jazz has had her blanket on since Thurs, really warming up this weekend (into the 60's) so will take it off. Getting so tired of hauling hot water out, today was the first morning in nearly a week I haven't had to. Still have the gremlin in the tailgate, had to unlock it at the feedstore, then unlock when I got home. Have had that truck a little over 5 yrs and have NEVER had that problem before. Actually thinking about taking it off.

When I went out to hay yesterday morning (snow on a chilly morning smells SO good!), little Sobe came bounding back up onto the porch as I was tying my boots and jumped on my hands (I had to start the tying over again, lol). It was like she was so excited by the snow on the ground and had run back up to tell me it had snowed. What did we humans ever do to deserve dogs? So darn cute. It got up to the low 40s, I think, and all the snow melted except for a bit on the north side of things. I didn't ride because of the mud, but I enjoyed being outside doing a few chores.

Mikey's drs told him this would be a major surgery, and they did not think he was needing it yet. He had heart vales put in about 5 nearly 6 yrs ago, and one of them lets blood run back, it is just a tiny bit, but still it's going the wrong way. I told him we would just fix him up ourselves, with a can of "stop leak" for radiators. That brings a smile to him.
Today was so warm, if 34 is warm, bright sunshine. Went to Ladysmith to finish getting things for Saturday. Took Mom with us, so she gets out of the house. We let her poke around in Connections, came home with a giant baby bottle bank, 2 little jointed bunnies for Easter, a magnetic bird, and 2 necklaces....hit the jackpot day, jewerly "buy one...get one free" all household and kic-knats 1/2 price so spent 167 with tax. But after washing up baby bank bottle, put all my change in it for Ryder. Rich kids, has over 2.80 now. Ha Ha
Everything outside was laying in the hay sleeping when we got home, went out and pasted out "after Christmas candy canes" I found today 10 cents a box of 12. Cheap treats, but sure was hard to take off cellophane wraps.
Went on Ryons Rescue Saves, donated for 2 horses even my 5-10 dollars helps, I just wish I would win the lottery, but can not do that if I do not even buy a ticket.

Hi Rocky, here's a vote for ya. Well started out at 04 and made the high of 26 or so. But the sun was strong and felt great! A little wind, but not all that bad! I actually was sweating out there working the snow blower. Yep, that lovely high wind yesterday filled in all my hard labor moving that 7 inches of fluffy snow! So today it was snow blow all over again and then man the tractor and finish up the driveway. Got the Beast moved and all cleaned off too and shoveled out the bed. Horse got some time in the indoor, and then lunch of hay and fresh water. Honey played in the cleared paths running like a nut case! She hit the deep stuff a few times and was like, oh no, out of here! I was beat by then, had some lunch and a nice long nap! Love my naps! LOL! Marion and the blondes.

So glad Daniel is doing better. How is he for taking his antibiotic? It's usually quite a pain giving meds to a cat. My friend has a cat that got a bad tooth too and had to have it removed and is on antibiotics. I've never heard of a cat having tooth problems and now I know of 2 of them in 1 month.
We wound up with a couple inches of snow yesterday and it's in the teens this am, so it looks and feels like winter for a day (I'd better get out and hay my very pitiful herd this morning, lol). Supposed to warm up a lot by the weekend though.

5-6 inches is enough at one time, glad it was not heavy and wet. Now as long as those winds do not pick up and blow it all right where you walk. So glad Daniel is going to be OK. Never had a cat with tooth issues.
Was very windy today, temps were up to 20 above put 20-30 mph winds made it feel colder.
Made cookies today, nothing fancy, ch/chip with walnuts, and some crunchy peanut/coconut, and then some ch/chip without nuts for Richard, since he can not have anything "rough", he had a lot of troubles with his stomach when he was smaller, he is 10 now. Well for snowing for over 29 hours, thank goodness it was the light stuff and not coming down hard and fast! So our total was 7 inches! It stopped by noontime and of course the winds picked up then too! So the 24 F felt like 14 F and now the drifts are building up! Worked the snow blower first and got all down by the barn and indoor done, oops forgot to do a path past the gate to the manure pile! Oh well, that's what Thursday is for! LOL! Then maned the tractor and got 3/4 of the driveway done. Called it quits then, was frozen and cold! Got Honey and we went out to the barn and gave the kids lunch of hay and fresh water. Honey has a 15 X 25 puppy park in the back yard for potty time! Going down to the single digits tonight, oh joy! Might have to run the heat so those wall fins don't freeze up since the wind is blowing from that direction! Hope this stops soon and spring comes early! Marion and the blondes.

Only 10 and thinks of others. Jax was happy he got lots of treats. We got the 6" plus. Knew we would get it. Still better then the cold. The high teens seem like a heat wave. What a nice surprise this morning after it started getting light out, Mother Nature, Jack Frost, and Mr. Sun really outdid them selves....looked like a Christmas card, sparkling new snow, frost on all the trees, and actually "above" zero. Was below when we went to bed at 10, must have warmed up threw the night. Snowed a couple of inches. I went and left a pattern of circles all over the lawn. Felt like making a snow angel. Our drive to Phillips was so pretty too, 20 miles of just frosted trees and sunshine.
Going to bake tomorrow for our Christmas and birthday get together on Saturday the 20th. Also that evening will get together with my brother and sisters for Mom's 92 birthday. We all will play Bingo with white elephant gifts. Everyone cheats and trys to make the others win bingo. Lots of fun, but some of those gifts you don't dare just open up....never can tell what someone wrapped up. Most are very funny. Mom enjoys it too, I think she even trys to get bingo.

But lucky so far, since it started at 7 am this morning, and it's almost 12 hours, we've only got 2 inches so far! But they say the heavy snowfall will come overnight! New prediction is now 5 to 7 inches! Got the kids to the indoor and lunged Paige and did showmanship, then lunged Indy, and free lunged Bullseye. Got the wood burner going a few days now, feels great and I love the idea that I'm not using a ton of oil! Mo's up here in the house with us right now, but he's going back to the barn when I do pm feeding in a short while. He ran out when I went out with one of the kids and took off. Finally came back, but I was in the house and not going back out, so up the stairs he came and in the house! PS, got a text from Cheryl and Cisco, she'll be back on in a few days! YAY! Hope the cat is feeling better, glad someone is watching out for those who can not speak up for them selves. I lost one this fall, and I feel sorry for him, because I did not even know what happened to it. Was not one of mine, but a stray, that stayed out in the barn, I alway left food for him, and put out a box with bedding and a blanket.
Drs both told Mikey that this is a major surgery, and he is not quite not ready for it. Has to watch his INR and blood pressure, not sure if it was just high that day, because his other dr. had just taken him off one of his blood pressure meds.
Still below zero this morning, but got up to 8 or so, warming up a bit each day, but then chance of snow. Snowed nearly all day, but real light. Tomorrow Mike has to take his hearing aid, up to Phillips, in the VA office, woman from Wausau comes there every month. Save us a trip in the cold months.

Hi Rocky, here's a vote for ya. Well it was a productive running around errand day today! Started out at 09 degrees and got up to about 24 degrees. Sun was in and out, then out for the rest of the day! Went to town and got the newspapers for the doggie retreat and picked up a bunch of sale items at that store. Home and did a few things inside, like laundry, much needed! Then gave the kids lunch of fresh warm water and hay. Off to the chiropractor for my usual adjustment, much needed of course! Then Wally World for the really big grocery shopping! And it was a big one, hadn't shopped in three weeks due to the weather! All set now for a couple of weeks at least! Next it Tractor Supple and the Feed store for more of the kids food. Honey says I need my grain to mom! Marion and the blondes.

Drs are both specialist at Fairview UN of Minn. I have to talk to Mikey in person to find out more or Jennifer. Calling for 90% chance of snow today, rather have had the snow than the -17 and a terrible wind. My sister Debbie and hubby Gary were up to his Dad's 94th birthday, and because of the snow wanted us and my sister Kathy, (finally home from DC) to meet at Mom's early, so we were there by 10. Kat brought me 2 Breyer horses from a Goodwill and a pair of boots....just my size, if I can get my foot in than they are my size, but these did fit. Chance, her dog, wanted to leave with us. She said he will moop around now for a few days.
After we got back home, we were going to take Dominic home. He had a 21 school wrestling meet in Ladysmith, he took 3rd in his weight division. For that many schools, that is great. But his dad said he would cut us another truck load of firewood, cleaning up around his deer stand. We made it freezing cold and wind, but by then temps were up to a -3. Did chores early tonight, around 3-330, geese/duck and Cindy Lou were more than willing to go in. Tonight it should start a very slow warm up. Was -21 threw the night.

Hi Rocky, here's a vote for ya. Well only 08 this morning and a high of 18 F this afternoon. But the sun was out nice and strong, so made it feel a tad bit warmer. Indoor was at 30 degrees, so it was work time for the kids! Paige got lunged and a showmanship workout. Indy got lunged. Bullseye got to run free. Then it was lunch of fresh warm water and hay for them. Then football for me! All I can say is, so far with the 4 games this weekend, only one of my favorites has won. Last game is on now and the Saints are taking a beating! Oh well! Glad I don't bet money on these things! LOL! Marion and the blondes.

Mikey talked to 2 different drs, each with different ideas, one said let "it" go for a bit and other wants to put a plug in...not sure what the "it" is, will find out. When he had heart surgery before, they repair/replaced some vavles, and the blood leaks around one valve.
Remember your logic about the cold and horse's brains. I just read this on a posting about Horses Health....
"When my horses get cold, they lose brain cells. They act really dumb. Not sure how to explain it. Just real flighty and Bully which they know better."
Running late tonight, so just leaving a cote and short comments, and of course it is freezing cold again tonight...-19 this morning and barely made 0, but 0 on the plus side. :)

Hi Rocky, here's a vote for ya. Well it was an interesting day for sure! Went from a high of 62 yesterday to waking up to 26 this morning with a skip of ice and sleet/snow combo out there. But the winds were horrible, steady at 18 mph with gusts to almost 40 they were saying, and it sure felt like it! Temps dropped more throughout the day too! So it was not an indoor arena day at all. I didn't want to chance walking them out the door and have one freak out and slip on the now ice covered mud! So lunch time fresh water and hay, and they were very happy. My hay man came with another delivery of 50 bales. Probably need another 100 in the hay barn to make it till second cut Timothy in June. Marion and the blondes.

Did you wind up with much ice? Sure hope not.
we got almost 2 inches of rain too and we weren't even hit with the heaviest of the storm. A lot of wind behind it and the temps dropped quickly from 60s to 31 this am. I had to get a new deicer for the water trough as the last one's plug came apart when I unplugged it, but it's a lifesaver when it's below freezing.
The coolest thing happened yesterday. My sister in law wanted me to pick up some lunch for her while I was out and about, and when I went in, I ran in to a friend I haven't seen in over 15 years! She has since divorced and remarried, has a horse again and likes to trail ride. So you know what we want to cook up. She says her mare is super easy going and loves trails, the perfect trail partner for my terrier-in-a-horse's-body, Allie. We had a lot of fun catching up.
Well, looks like the rain and snow have moved way north of almost everybody. Be careful in the ice, stay warm, and have a great saturday.

Come visit me, Allie & BJ and his mom Gracie.

As King Jax, he should "order" better weather, but I would rather have this stuff now, than spring. Let Mother Nature get it out of her system. I like that 70 days until spring that sounded good.
Where the snow was packed down, like the drive way it was icey, but most of the snow was just like "snowball packing snow", then we got new snow on top of that, not like the 6-8 but more like 3-4, hard to tell, because the winds just blew all night. Hard crust on top of the snow now, most places I could walk on top. Was a -8 at 5 tonight. Animals all tucked in for the night. I think the big Cinnamon doe likes being in such a open pen. She comes right up to me when I give her more feed, not that she needs more in her pans, but this morning she got a slice of bread and a carrot, plus had to give her warm water. Each day they get treats, already have their oatmeal and Cheerios mixed for them.

Hi Rocky, here's a vote for ya. Well we got rain rain and more rain! Like almost 2 inches so far, and with the melting snow, it's a flooding mess out there! Not fun at all! Needless to say, the kids did not get to the indoor today! Instead it was a complete spa day for them. Complete with shaving of the muzzles, bridle paths and fetlocks! They enjoyed it! Then lunch of hay and fresh water. Temps are still at 60 degrees, but by morning will be down to the low 30's! And the rain will turn to ice and sleet! Oh joy for sure! Got the YakTrax on my other boots all ready to go! Marion and the blondes.
