How We Met

We weren't really looking to buy a horse, but I saw Kokanee on Candace's facebook and I just fell in love. So I asked my parents if we could go see him and we did I rode him at a walk and he was an angel. He had some things to work one but he was amazing. And my parents just decided to buy him for me..

ONE WEEK DOWN, SIX TO GO...
Good Morning All, thanks to everyone for the prayers and good positive thoughts, we really appreciate it. It has been a horrible week, Trevor's schedule is every day except Saturday and Sunday, so one week down, 6 to go. Monday was a huge blast of chemo as well as radiation, and by Wednesday he was feeling pretty terrible, he was prepared, so it is not a shock, and he knows it will get worse before it gets better, pray it gets better....they told him that his hearing may be affected because of the location of the tumor, he may loose his hearing, it has started to be affected already, if he does loose it, they say it is permanent. I miss you guys, but I know you are here for us, Love you for that. Talk soon, Love Donna Lee & family.

Cannot believe how much support we are getting, thanks! Our next BIG step was a 5 day Parelli Horse Camp last June. I wasn't sure I could ride that much, but decided to go anyway. The first day was spent mostly on ground work and arena work, making sure everyone could sidepass, back at least 10 steps, and do rollbacks, and walk, trot and canter quietly. We also played some games, notably trying to keep another horse and ride from reaching the opposite side of the arena. It rained that afternoon, so we learned some knot tying before going back out to ride that evening. I was nervous when I found out that we would be riding twice daily, wasn't sure how Cisco would feel about that. We would ride in the morning, take a break in the heat of the day, then go out after an early supper and ride till dark or after (full moon week).

Fancy leaves a frigid wintery vote for you.
Hang in there. There are only a few more weeks of winter, Spring is right around the corner!

School let out early Friday and there was no school Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. We took a spur of the moment trip! We have had no snow here, but we did enjoy a light snow before our return home. I am thankful the snow was light and did not stick on the roads. Cowboy enjoyed a snowball fight with his oldest brother! I have taken all kinds of meds this past week for my winter illness. Now, I am left with this aggravating cough.
I have a doc visit this morning for my left hand. I am sure this will by my last follow up visit for my hands. Yippeeee, More thoughts of spring activities!!!

Fancy and Trigger are feeling frisky. I could not believe Trigger was gallivanting about with Fancy. This is not a sight you see often. Trigger is so pretty when he struts his stuff.

School resumes today, so, here we go ")

No more Bucking, & a vote towards HOTD
THANKS FOR YOUR VOTES & SUPPORT!!! The Chiropractor pretty much adjusted everything, and said that the horse had been in pain for quite a while. Really made me feel badly - at least some of training problems I'm sure were related to him being in pain. He had also started bucking when asked to canter, this has resolved. And also, while he had gotten pretty good about his feet, he always really fussed about his L hind being done. He has been much better, even my farrier has remarked on what a change it has made. Cisco will usually now lift a hoof as soon as you bend down. The Chiropractor also pointed out that Cisco's R eye orbit had been fractured - and when you really look at him head on, his R eye is sunken a bit.

THE LAST STORY....
Good Morning, we left a thank you vote. Dr. Cook left the next day for a veterinary conference in California, but he asked Dr. McGurrin to call him after seeing Mackie. I told Mackie that we were going to get some answers these people were the BEST of the BEST, surely they could help us. My friend, Jack trailered us and Mackie did super. We were met by Dr. McGurrin and her team. The first thing they did after taking a very complete history, was to attach probes and set up an ECG, as the printout started, Dr. McGurrin asked one of her team to tell her what it showed, he hesitated but finally said, "it shows that this horse is in heart failure". I felt my knees buckle, someone grabbed me and Dr. McGurrin handed me a box of tissue, she said, "you are going to hear lots of talk today, please try to be calm, when I have gathered all my information we will sit down and discuss it together" There were lots more tests. With all of the poking, probing and tests Mackie remained relaxed and calm. We took him back to a stall and went to discuss his case. Dr. McGurrin explained that typically horses do not show signs of heart condition, particularly racehorses, that is why you hear the horror stories about them dropping dead at the track. She felt in Mackie's case this was a very long standing problem, and eventually his heart just got to the point where it could no longer keep up. She wanted to assure me and of course, Dr. Cook that we did not miss anything, they just don't give any indication until it is often too late. She said sometimes drugs help, but in Mackie's advanced case she did not recommend it. I asked if she was prepared to help us that day, she said yes, I agreed to let him go as long as she allowed me to stay with him. She asked if I needed a bit of time with him first, when we were alone I explained to him that it was time, that I would be there and to please trust me one last time. I held him, I stroked his neck and told him how very loved he was, my face and my voice where the last he saw and heard. Sure ruined my make up that day, the ride home was terrible, Jack kept saying "let it out kid" I did...Dr. Cook was on the answering machine when I got home telling me how sorry he was and that he was glad Jack was with me, I did the right thing. Dr. MGurrin sent me a copy of the autopsy along with Mackie's halter a lovely braid of his tail and a plaster imprint of his hoof with his name. She said she removed and preserved his heart, she uses it for teaching purposes. I get great comfort from that. I learned 2 things that day, 1. Mackie never gave up, his heart did, 2. it is just a body, his spirit lives on, this is for you Mackie, I love you, we will meet again. If you feel like you know Mackie, then this month has been a success, thanks to all who supported us, special thanks to the dogs that came by every day to vote, Love Donna Lee & Mackie

Hi, I had to be at work for 4:15AM, then I had physio after work, sorry I'm late. We left a vote for you. I hope I can get thru these last two days. Things were going well for us, but on August 2/2007 as I was calling the guys in for supper, Mackie laid down just as he approached the gate, not that odd, the strange part was it took him a really long time to get up and with a struggle, it was like slow motion, hard to describe but strange. He looked absolutely exhausted, he had no temp, breathing was regular, he was E, D, P, P, but something just was not right, I went with my gut and I called Dr. Cook. He came the next day and after a very long thorough exam he asked me to put on my "serious hat", he said Mackie needed to be seen by a specialist at the Equine Hospital, a Cardiologist. I said, make the appointment, I'll arrange trailering, Thanks so much for standing by us thru the month. Your support means so much to me. Love Donna Lee & Mackie

Down to the last couple of days, Thanks to all for helping us with our HOTM, you guys are amazing...
I'm sure you have guessed, the blood work was positive for EPM, that just meant the horse has been exposed to the parasite, the only definitive test is to draw spinal cord fluid, however the protocol at that time was, if you have symptoms and a positive test, treat, so we did just that. Meds had to be given on a near empty stomach so Mackie had to be stalled for an hour with only water, no hay, given the meds then wait an hour before he could eat again. Statistically about 70% of horses will recover, however how much recovery depends on how much nerve damage has been done. Re-occurrence is rare, but it does happen. Mackie seemed to respond well to the meds, his stumbling improved, his general appearance was brighter, however, you guessed it he did have a re-occurrence. We put him back on another course of meds and as a result of the meds he developed gastic ulcers. But thru all of this he just kept plugging along, we dealt with one thing at at time and slowly he improved. We continued riding and we actually started jumping small xrails again, it was just a matter of him regaining muscle memory and his own confidence. It was a trying season but by July things were looking good, in fact today's profile picture was taken shortly after all the treatments, wasn't he a handsome boy? Love Donna Lee & Mackie

Mackie and I appreciate the support, thank you...
Good Morning, I'm so off routine, we had to start work at 5AM yesterday and again Monday, they don't realize that this cuts into my HC time... We left a windy Canadian vote. I did the usual things for the stumbling without much success, but remember it was sporadic, one day while jumping a small course of xrails, Mackie just lost it before the jump and he fell down. Clearly he was upset and the way he looked at me was like, WHAT HAPPENED?? I was not hurt and he looked OK, that was when Dr. Cook came to evaluate. First thing he said was, "you don't want navicular..." after his exam he said he was drawing blood to test for EPM, my heart sank and I said NO, HE HAS NAVICLULAR. I had read a bit about EPM, and I did not want that. I won't go into detail, google it and you will see. It is a neurological disease with some fairly nasty consequences. So, I waited for the blood work to come back. Enjoy your day, Love Donna Lee & Mackie

thanks for supporting Angel Sassy Mac HOTM
Thanks to everyone that voted us HOTD, we are so excited, we are getting close to the end of the month, I still have lots of story to tell. We left you a vote this afternoon. When things started to go wrong, at first I didn't know what the issue was, mostly because it was not consistent, some days everything was great but other times it was like Mackie had two left front feet. I can't describe it any other way, he stumbled quite a bit, I know lots of horses stumble on occasion, but remember, I knew this horse, and this was not just a stumble. We had his farrier check him, we checked saddle fit, we looked at teeth, we had corrective shoeing done to help with breakover. The strange thing was it was not all the time, I lunged him and tried to see it, it was like he didn't know where to put his feet. Years earlier Dr. Cook gave me a book entitled Lameness in Horses, he has since lived to regret that....I read that book everyday, and when it got to where I felt we needed Dr. Cooks expertise, I called him and said "can you come and look at Mackie? I think he has navicular" Talk soon, Love Donna Lee

Good Morning, here is a vote and a wish that everyone had a wonderful Christmas Day. Thank You so much for HOTD, this will help us on our HOTM journey.
Mackie had just turned 9 in the spring of 2004 and I brought him home in August, the next spring we dealt with all the health issues, which we overcame. Spring 2006 came and believe me I was terrified about his vaccinations. Dr. Cook had decided to premedicate plus we broke them up and did them over a few days rather than all at once. I watched him like a hawk, I bet I took his temp on the hour...poor Mackie. All went well, our riding also went well, we were working so well together, I had him doing small courses of just xrails, but still it was great fun. I had managed to put a few pounds on him, race horses tend to be a bit too slim for me. Life was good. funny how it can change so quickly. Love Donna Lee & Mackie

MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL MY HC FRIENDS
Good Morning my friends, thanks so much for making this journey with Mackie so enjoyable. I can't tell you how much it has meant to me. Mackie, was like a small school child, you how kids bring everything home, well, if it was going around Mackie got it....I am a good rider not a great rider. I have over the years had instructors, I love taking lessons. However there was a financial situation with Mackie's health and don't forget I still had Sterl May and little Jackie to care for. Plus I rented the barn and pasture. Because Mackie was such a willing partner, I did not have a coach. We seemed to be doing just fine on our own, after all this was just for fun, I was not headed for the Olympics. Everyday was great he never seemed to have off days. Talk soon, Love Donna Lee

we left a vote today
We are trying to get our votes and blogs done before we lose power, we had freezing rain all night and forecast for all day too, yuk. Thanks again for supporting us, we love it. When spring arrived I could not wait to get my boy going, we had a wonderful winter of just getting to each other. His movement was much different than Sterl May, I posted a couple of pics, he had a lovely long stride. He was smooth even at trot. Trouble started with his spring vaccinations, first he had a reaction to either tetanus or rabies, we know because Dr. Cook, gave both of those in the hip, and the West Nile in the neck. Mackie seemed off within hours of the shot, sometimes not uncommon, but by the next morning he was running a temp, and he was not wanting to move. We tried hot compresses, but when he started to swell at the injection site, Dr. Cook came and we started him on antibiotics. I called Kathy and she said he had never had an issue.. Remember I said if it wasn't for BAD LUCK I'd have NO LUCK. Well, it got worse, Mackie now had a swelling the size of a soft ball on his rump, and he was getting 2 injections a day of the meds. On the second day, didn't he react to the antibiotic, YES HE DID. Next step, Dr. Cook changed the meds and decided that the abscess had to be opened. When the pressure was released, it literally expolded in Dr. Cooks face, and it hit the ceiling of the barn, that must have felt so good for Mackie. This procedure had to be done twice and there were almost daily visits from Dr. Cook, remember it isn't about the money... cha ching....We finally got this mess all cleared up and decided that he would have to be premeditated before any vaccination in the future. Have a great day, talk soon, Love Donna Lee & Mackie

please help us get HOTM
Good Morning my friends, thank goodness we missed the most of the freezing rain, we got plain rain, but more is on the way today. We left an early morning vote.
I felt that getting Mackie in late August was a perfect time, I still had some nice weather to ride, that year I think I was still riding some in early December. And then, because I don't ride in the winter, we could use that time to really get to know each other. It was a wonderful winter. I think one of the things I loved most about him was his calm manner, he was a very affectionate horse and he got along so well with Sterl May and little Jackie. They were like the 3 musketeers,
I just so enjoyed watching them. I guess David was right, I was at the barn A LOT. Have a great weekend, Love Donna Lee & Mackie

We are leaving a freezing rain vote, yuk, should be an interesting ride to work....
Mackie and Sterl May are both pacer bred Standardbre's, however because of all the groundwork Kathy did with Mackie, he very rarely paced. Sterl May fell into a pace whenever she was upset or confused about what I was asking, since I was a beginner, that was quite often. The pace is not uncomfortable to sit, just different. It is a distinct back and forth motion, side to side. It didn't matter to me, actually I thought it was cool that my horses had an extra gait. Mackie was so calm and easy to be with, I was lovin' this. Thanks for listening to my stories, love HC, talk soon, Love Donna Lee & Mackie
