How We Met

He was sold at a very young age for $100,000 to a man for racing. Since he is Secretariat’s great grandson, it was believed he would follow his grandfather’s hoof prints. However, he was not a leader, and did no good in the racing business. He was then sold to a young women for event jumping. She pushed him hard, everyday, over massive jumps. Veritas' hooves are the size of a small arabian’s hooves, which became destroyed and he received arthritis at the age of 6. Since he was forced to work through the pain, he turned fearful and bitter. The lady had no use of him, and sold him to a teenage girl. The girl was able to work with him, and help him lose his bitterness. She showed him at small county fairs for a small while, until Veritas started limping. The vet X-rayed him, but found nothing wrong. About 5+ times he limped at different shows, always on a different leg, though he only had arthritis in one leg. Every time they saw him limp, the girl would trailer him back home where she would ride him in a pen; he would be perfectly sound. After many vet visits by many different vets, conclusion was that Veritas had a psychological issue. Fear was still lingering within the back of his mind. He remembered the pain caused by the woman, and would start to feel it within his legs. In order to help him get over the fear, the girl sent him to board at a fanciful dressage stable; $4,000 a month for board; including training, feeding, and stall cleaning. There, he was taught the art of dressage. He enjoyed it and fell greatly in love with it. He became a true beauty. Soon, the girl had left to college and abandoned Veritas as their family’s responsibility. They couldn’t possibly afford to keep him while paying for college, so they searched for a good home. And that’s where I come into the picture. He was given to us freely just a couple years ago. I am only a 15, soon to be 16, year old girl, but the bond I have with him has been miraculous, and is growing ever so strongly. We have been able to work through his toughest fears, and make it out stronger than before. He has carried me through my first horse show and showed me what it’s like to experience that one-of-a-kind bond with an animal. He is truly my best friend<3.

Voted :) Thanks so much for this surprise HOTM. Spring began a little rough for Fancy with her heel bulb injury and myself with the wrist issues. Our HorseChannel friends helped to make May 2013 one of the best birthday months ever.

FANCY'S PERCEPTIONS: All I Need to Know in Life I Learned From My Horse: You can never have too many treats.

I hand walked Fancy this morning, while she ate grass. Today was my Siberian Husky, Bandit’s first birthday. Fancy gave Bandit a little nuzzle for his first birthday.
I am glad Fancy is out of the stall because, Fancy makes sure Trigger poops along the back fence line. I appreciate that, because it is easier to clean up with it all in one area. LOL. Fancy had to poop before I was done picking up and she pooped right on top of the poop pile that I had made. Now how considerate is that? What a doll :)

FANCY'S PERCEPTIONS: All I Need to Know in Life I Learned From My Horse: When in doubt, run far, far away.

Fancy was a very good girl at her vet check up this morning. I remembered at the last minute to get the vaccine in her hip instead of neck. She seemed to tolerate it better that way the last time. The vet measured her height for me. Fancy is 15 HH!!! I could tell she grew, but every time I measured her, I always get 14. ???. I knew I was not getting a correct reading when I measured her.

Trying to leave a quick blog and vote. I plan to get coggins pulled in the morning. I need to be getting to bed.
Monday I made a new lady horse friend at the farm before we went riding. After that, my brothers and two other friends did enjoy a great ride on a beautiful day! There were 6 of us that rode into the woods for a while and then rode around town. All the kids squealed and the adults waved and yelled out to us. One group of ladies said, "oh look they got the baby riding," in reference of my little Cowboy, LOL. That little fellow of mine was a bit disturbed by being called a baby. LOL. For the rest of the day every one in our group picked at him for being The BABY! They even asked me if I had pampers and milk with me. LOL.
Fancy had one problem during the day when we came across packing material that was blowing across a vacant lot. We worked on that for a while :)
All in all, it was the best birthday weekend and holiday ever because it was filled with horsey activities!!!
Now I have to get all my housework caught up along with my small part time job. I was so tired Monday night, my husband said he has not seen me look so tired. But I was happy!

when are you running HOTM, WE WILL HELP...
RAINY DAY VOTES FOR ALL, My search began again, Sonya and I had 3 horses lined up to look at, none were close to home so we made a day of it. The first 2 were not even possibilities, I was tired, it was getting on in the day and I wanted to just go home, Sonya convinced me we had come this far, let's just go look. The directions were bad, we got lost, when we finally got there I was in a bit of a cranky mood. Everything changed when we were introduced to Sassy Mac. He was so handsome (but I had learned that is no reason to pick a horse)His manners were excellent, I actually wondered for a minute if he was drugged, he wasn't, we spent several hours with him, hearing his history, his training, the personal medical reason the owner had to let him go. He was 8, 16hh and oh so sweet. I rode him, we video taped him, we came home to think it over. Mackie arrived the next week, Jackie and Sterly had a new friend and I had a horse to ride. Life was good again. One thing I have learned over the years, with horses, THERE IS ALWAYS SOMETHING, talk tomorrow, thanks for helping Sterly, love to all, DONNA LEE & STERLY GIRLY

Votes for all
GOOD MORNING ALL, we left votes on this sunny Saturday morning.
Clean up got under way, basically this property had been left about 15 years ago, the barn closed up the fences left to fall down, the house had been rented over the years and as you can see from the pics, the barn was used as a garbage dump. We had to literally hack the overgrowth away with machetes in order to get inside, we carted away at least half a dozen trailer loads of "junk". It took a good couple of months to get it ready to be a safe comfortable home for Sterl May, but thru all the work I stayed focused on my goal. Once she was settled and happy I would look for a horse to ride. The only issue was Sterl had never been alone and I worried about her stressing by herself, that is where "Jackie" entered the picture (today's profile shot) Our coach, Val had a few boarders, one owed back board, they had a horse and little Jackie, they came in the middle of the night and took the horse but left Jackie, Val gave him to Sterl May for company. Jackie was about 7 when we got him, part mini, part Shetland pony, about 9hh, but don't worry, he didn't know he was little. He became Sterl's "little side kick". Life was good. TO BE CONTINUED, THANKS FOR THE SUPPORT, LOVE DONNA LEE & STERLY GIRLY

Sorry I have not been very active. My family promised to clean Fancy's corral while I was under doc care. Well, Fancy's corral was only cleaned once during the first week I was down. It took a few hours, but I was able to clean up for my Fancy Thursday. The remainder of that day and night was very painful and I did not feel up to computing.
Today we had to get ready for our horseshow tomorrow! Guess What??? I had help! My husband helped me clean Fancy and he put the shavings in her stall. I was shocked!!! I hope Fancy stays clean til the morning. She is sparkling. I told my husband she should stay in the house with us tonight, because she was sooo clean. He did not share my thoughts on that one. LOL.

Have a beautiful weekend. We will be back soon!

PLEASE VOTE STERL MAY HOTM
Feels like winter is back in Ontario. We left chilly, windy votes for all.
The next stage of Sterl May story could go on and on, I'm just going to give you the highlights. Even tho we live in the country, we had no place to keep her, so I gathered my thoughts and started to look for somewhere she could call home. I did have some criteria, like it needed to be safe, preferably with some kind of companion, Sterl has never been alone, it needed to be close enough that I could get there daily to feed etc. my work day starts early and I did not want to be driving all over the country side before work every day. I put the word out every where, I asked neighbors, I literally started knocking on doors. It was not looking good, until finally someone told me about an old abandoned barn not far from where we lived. There was an old shack of a house on the property that was rented to a young man that farmed with his family, he kept the house as a place to get away from work and be alone. But the barn and pasture had been let go for about 15 years. I took a look at it and at first rejected the whole idea, way too much work involved. But after David and one of my brothers hacked their way through the overgrowth around the barn door, they said "this could work". I used my imagination, the barn had water and electric, it had a pasture. about 5 acres, it needed fencing, but I saw in my mind a safe peaceful home for my girl. I located the owners, I told them my story. It was like it was meant to be. These people owned this property and had planned that one day when they retire, they would build on this land, they where huge animal lovers and where touched by my dedication to Sterl May. They said "if you think that place will work for you, you are welcome to it" the only restriction was, if something goes wrong we don't want to hear about it, I was responsible for the clean up and fencing, and I had to get along with Robert, the tenant in the little house. WOO HOO, Sterl was getting a home, roll up my sleeves and get to work, TO BE CONTINUED, LOVE DONNA LEE & STERLY GIRLY

PLEASE VOTE STERL MAY JUNE HOTM, left a vote
GOOD MORNING, We left you all a vote. Now that I had an answer although, not the answer I wanted, I have to admit that I did fall apart, there were lots of tears. Reaction varied at the barn, most were understanding and sympathetic but remember the lady that said I needed to "hit her harder", well she said "I don't know what you're crying about, you just sell her and get something else, it's not like you raised from a baby" I have never believed that animals were disposable, and I promised Sterl a home until the day she died. But, reality set in David said that I could not continue to pay board to go 4x a week to simply pat her, there was the wear and tear on the vehicle and the gas for all the travelling back and forth, for what, I can't ride her. I needed to THINK. bringing her home was not an option, we had no land or barn. I didn't know what to do, YET, but I knew I WAS NOT GETTING RID OF HER. Talk soon, Love Donna Lee & STERLY GIRLY

It is ok to say ‘I love you’ before tragedy strikes.

Enjoyed my Fancy time, early this morning. We practiced for showmanship and barrels. Then I let her enjoy the pretty greens in the back yard. I could not believe she was being so good after not being ridden for so many weeks. Trigger ate in peace while Fancy was out with me. Then he screamed his head off for Fancy to return. Fancy and Trigger enjoyed some carrots before I left them to their own devices. I can’t wait till tomorrow!

Votes for both your horses
GOOD MORNING, please drop by Charlie's page, I posted a picture of his foot, 2 weeks shy of 10 months, lookin' good...We left votes for everyone too, thank you

You guys are really good, a couple of you asked about her saddle fit, before we even got Dr. Cook involved, we had a saddle fitter take a look, he was satisfied that we had a good fit, on palpation of her spine she showed no tenderness. So here we are at the Hospital, the referral was made and Dr. Cook had sent a history and asked for xrays. I have to say the day was very long, but incredibly interesting, I was warned ahead of time that this is a teaching Hospital,so this would not be a quick in and out visit. Sterl was assigned Dr's in charge of her case and then there were what seemed like a million students at varying levels all hovering around my girl. Every square inch of her was gone over, and a million questions were asked. How nice to spend a whole day talking about your horse and everyone HAS to listen. They told me they would gather all their info and a report would be sent to Dr. Cook. They did absolutely everything except watch me ride her. When they lounged her, she actually moved pretty good, I think it was adrenaline 'cause this was exciting for her too, in the end her assigned Dr's said they saw NO need to xray her spine. Those of you that know me,even a little know that I am non assertive, but, be proud of me, I became like a Mamma bear with her cubs, I said "do you know Dr. Cook? he sent us here for xrays, do you have any idea how hard it was to get here today? we are not leaving without xrays" So, they took our xrays, she needed some sedation because these needed to be very accurate, we waited until the films were ready, they were brought to a large viewing screen and all the Dr's and students that had been with us all day were gathered for the reading. Fancy and I enjoyed a cloudy evening! We were overdue for this show practice and time just hanging out. Fancy did not fret for Trigger one bit, even though Trigger screamed murder every time we got out of his sight. We are expecting rains and clouds all week. But the weekend may be nice. We will try to practice a little each day. It was so much fun! And today was the first day Fancy was ridden since her heel injury. She was great. Like she never missed a beat. I am glad I did not rush her.

GOOD MORNING, LEFT A THANK YOU VOTE, So, let's get right to it. On routine exam all her vitals where good, she, of course appeared healthy, she had regular vacs, wormings and her teeth were good. We drew blood for a complete work up, all neg, with nothing obvious we started the slow process of ruling out, one by one the possibilities. I mean slow because in order to not get confused we needed to give each treatment time to test effects, does that make sense?? Being a Mare, almost 15 and never bred, we wanted to rule out ovary issues first, I was happy and relived when the physical exam and the internal ultrasound was negative, we then went at the simple stuff like corrective shoeing, we tried a course of Regumate and a series of Prostoglandn injection, we tested for neurological issues, we looked at eye issues, double checked teeth and throat, there was no obvious tenderness in her back muscles, however she lounged better than under saddle. Thru all the testing, which took weeks, I still rode her and acted like everything was fine. When Dr. Cook was satisfied that we had ruled out EVERYTHING, he said he needed some very accurate xrays of her spine, he needed us to go to the Equine Hospital in Guelph. He called to make her appointment and I asked Val(our coach) to trailer us up there, and on Jan 15/98 in one of the worst snow storms ever off we went. TO BE CONTINUED. Left a vote for you
GOOD MORNING, LEFT VOTES FOR ALL, TO THANK YOU FOR YOURS. This is where Sterly's story takes a bit of a twist. FF almost 4 years, we are still at the boarding barn, Sonya is now in University, I still ride 4x a week. I started to notice a slight hesitation from Sterl that was new, she did not want to go forward, at first it was mild, and I could push her thru it, but it got worse. She would actually do a small buck and a very tiny rear when I asked for forward. This was so out of character for her, but ever her resistance was polite, like she was trying to get my attention, she did. Believe me when I say there were lots of suggestion from folks that observed us, most thought that it was behavior and that I was not strong enough and I was letting her get away with it, one woman told me I had to beat her hard enough to make a welt on her skin, that would smarten her up!!!. I chose to call Dr. Cook, I explained the situation and we made arrangements for him to come and see her, I asked if it could be "just" behavior, he said "whenever a horse that was happy with its work begins to resist, they are trying to tell you something is wrong", in the meantime carry on as normal, act like everything is fine TO BE CONTINUED, Talk soon, love Donna Lee & STERLY GIRLY

LEFT A VOTE, THANKS FOR YOURS
GOOD MORNING MY FRIENDS,I would like to continue with Sterl May's story, thanks for reading them and commenting on them, because she is 30 and retired, it is also fun for me to remember the early years. THANKS FOR THE VOTES AND SUPPORT. All was well at the barn, Sterly's retraining was in full swing, I still leased Fool Kat, so I was a pretty busy girl, 2 horses to ride 4x a week and the barn was 40 minutes from home, a full time job, a house and husband to take care of plus 4 cats and a dog(Nicky) that I did agility with. The young couple that owned Fool Kat were pregnant and building a new house, they had no time for her but, did not want to let her go. So I was a perfect solution for them. Unfortunately, the baby arrived and the house was ready and they were ready to take her home. I had leased her for almost 2 years, I had Sterly but still it was a sad good by. Fool Kat was 23 when I started her lease, I kept in touch after they moved her home, she was basically a pet, she died quietly at 32. TALK SOON, LOVE DONNA LEE AND STERLY GIRLY

GOOD MORNING, here it is day 16 already. WE LEFT A VOTE FOR YOU, and a big thanks for the wonderful support. Being a pretty new horse owner, I had sort of thought once I get the first year under my belt, I'd be good to go....Silly me, aren't we ALWAYS learning from them. One thing is for sure, if all horses were like STERL MAY, everyone would have a horse. By now she is pretty much the "sweetheart" of the barn. The owners loved her 'cause she was easy to handle, never caused a fuss and I was there regularly(every chance I had). One morning, Sterl was in the aisle cross ties, I was grooming her and Margaret was touring a new prospective boarder, they got to us and Margaret says "this is Sterl May, she is Standardbred, this horse jumps" as they walked past, I heard the guy say "nice butt!!!" HEY,he was talking about the horse. LOVE DONNA LEE & STERLY GIRLY

Thanks for listening to my stories of Sterl May, I guess by now you can see just how special she is to us. The trail ride was bad, but there were tons of great stuff that happened at "the barn" One morning I had just finished my ride and we jumped a few little jumps. I had turned Sterl loose in the arena to roll. As I waited for her, one of the other boarders came in with a friend. She introduced me and said her friend just came for the visit to watch her ride. I told them I was almost done, I'd be out of the way in a few minutes. I couldn't help notice that the friend was REALLY looking at Sterly, of course I thought because she is sooooo beautiful. As I got ready to leave the arena, I called "come on Sterl May, let's go" the friend says, "what did you call her? Is she a Standardbred?" "she said, I'm K. V. this horse was born on my Dad's farm, OMG, wait till I tell Dad that I saw her, she looks great, do you jump her? he will be so happy to hear that she is alive and well", we both cried a few happy tears, what a small world, what a great horse. After that day, I made sure that I let Mr. V know every year or so that Sterly was indeed alive and well. WE LEFT YOU A VOTE TODAY, THANKS FOR YOURS, talk soon, Love Donna Lee & Sterly Girly

we appreciate the support
Thanking you all with a vote today. We were really enjoying life together at the barn. I love having the guys home but I have always missed the camaraderie of other riders support. Sterly was now jumping small courses, mostly xrails but also some verticals. We had advanced to the outdoor ring. One evening, late spring I was at the barn and had just started my warm up when a couple of the other riders came in and said "we are going on a trail ride, want to join us" We had not done that yet, so I thought OK, sounds fun.....WRONG...Sterl May thought there was something spooky behind every tree, bush, rock, everything was a monster. She just could not settle, so I could not settle. The other riders are like, she'll be fine come on. So I hang in, we struggle along, Sterl on high alert, snorting all the way. Just then we see ahead of us in the field a dozen or so cows and everyone is like HEE HAW, LETS GET 'EM. I'm like, NO. STERL JUST FREAKED...they all took off, left us there, me scared to death, Sterl just dancing and prancing. So I did what any chicken would do, I got off and we walked back to the barn. I was just fuming, nice friends, don't ever ask me to go on your stupid trail ride again, everyone had a big laugh on us, it was all soon forgotten, but we never went on another trail ride again. LOVE YOUR STORY
GOOD MORNING ALL, LEFT YOU A VOTE. Today's story is my personal favorite, here it is. Lessons were going well, we were becoming quite comfortable with one another, she loved her trot poles and her friend Doolie. She was learning to flex and bend but our canter was pretty rough. Sterl would anticipate my asking and she would throw herself into it off her front, not pretty. Our instructor said if we start her on some small jumps it will help her learn to use her hind end. Sterl was already a bit of a "wonder horse" around the barn. Lots of the other riders would chuckle "you can't ride a Standardbred" We practiced our two point, our release on the flat then, when we were ready we planned to jump next lesson. Word spread thru the barn like wildfire "she is going to jump that horse, Standardbred's can't jump" So, here we are next lesson, Val has a couple of TINY xrails set up, Sonya and Doolie were there, I was as nervous as can be. We do our warm up, get sort of relaxed, just then I notice that quite a crowd has gathered at the rail. They are all there to see a Standardbred jump. I trot around the arena, line up, get in two point, get ready for my release,PANIC..I turn my head to the right and CLOSE MY EYES... when I opened them we were on the other side of the jump, STERLY DID IT, Standardbred's can jump. LOVE THAT GIRL, talk tomorrow, thanks for the votes, LOVE DONNA LEE & STERLY GIRLY
