Remember about my luck...well, we just got all tacked up ant started out to the ring, and yup, you guessed it, rain, what gives, it was just spitting, so we stayed out for half an hour anyway. The rest of the day was off and on drizzle. That is not what the the weatherman said. David made the letters out of feed tub lids and screwed them on to stakes, I'll tell him you all think it looks good. Charlie and I started dressage a couple of summers ago, remember I didn't ride last summer due to my arm, hope we have a good season this year. I can't afford a lesson every week, so I bought some MP3 download lessons from Jane Savoie's website, they are super. Talk soon, Love Donna Lee

Good Morning all, I managed to get thru the first week after vacation. The weather was just stupid this week, cold mornings, warm afternoons, HOT late afternoons and 3 days of showers in the late afternoon. I said before this full time job is gettin' in my way of fun time. No ride this week, and had to be careful of the rich grass because of the humid and wet conditions. We will have a ride this morning before it gets hot. Then maybe run the vacuum over and sit is the sun with a book, eh, sounds good to me. David made some dressage letters for my riding ring, I added a couple of pics, Love that man... We voted today, Love Donna Lee

The farrier came yesterday and it turns out Cheyenne's hoofs weren't contracting properly so her frogs weren't growing and her hooves were staying small. The farrier said because of her lack of frogs it was uncomfortable for her to stand or walk. He said now that they are trimmed properly they should grow quite a bit just in the next few days.

To the Indian the Paints were more than a warhorse or a means of travel. He was a medium of exchange and a status symbol. The number of Horses he owned determined an Indian's wealth, and any wealthy hunter owned at least a half dozen horses. Paint-Horses were especially treasured and prized. Even though they never bred their horses carefully, the Indians took pride in their animals and made some attempt to breed for the coloring they admired so much.
The Paint Horse has always been associated with the Indian in legends, stories, songs, and even in today's television programs. At the siege of the Alamo, at the Fetterman massacre, at the Battle of the Little Big Horn, the Paint Horse was there.

We left a rainy, cold it's going to return to snow vote, even the weather girl on TV last night said she just wished she could give a good forecast for a change...Looks like a "stay inside and get groomed day" their little paddock was starting to melt, I'm just glad we had good run off, so far no flooding in the barn. The next few days are below freezing again, so we have some ice, not good. I'm so jealous of all of you that can ride. Trevor is in the S L O W recovery stage. His great attitude is back, he said he is very anxious to eat solid food again...not just yet, one day at a time, thanks for all the prayers, we know it is not OVER yet...have a great weekend, Love Donna Lee

We are so dry here so the static electricity is horrible. I didn’t even pet my horses yesterday because everything I touch shocks me and I do not want the horses to associate my touching to those little pops of electricity!!! I am also fixing to start withdrawal symptoms from not riding…gotta get on my horses and ride at the lake before I go nuts ♡ Rain should be creeping in Saturday afternoon or evening so I only have one shot at riding cuz Sunday rain will be here as well…Whinny’s & neighs as we prance on your horseshoe :)

We left a freezing cold vote, NO WORK today, tooo cold for turkeys, -26C with wind chill of -43C. I made it in to work yesterday, I was late because I waited for the plow to do our road so I could get to the highway, our truck is 4 wheel drive, not a fun ride... I never would have got out of the yard in the car....I had to dig a trench to get into the barn, the snow had drifted so bad, the paddock is knee deep with snow, last night we lost power for several hours so the water pipes in the barn froze, we have a heat coil on the hydrant, but now power, no heat. I;ll have to haul water from the house. We are all safe, hope you are too, it is nuts everywhere, have I ever mentioned I HATE WINTER? Love Donna Lee

Good Morning, we left a thank you vote. Dr. Cook left the next day for a veterinary conference in California, but he asked Dr. McGurrin to call him after seeing Mackie. I told Mackie that we were going to get some answers these people were the BEST of the BEST, surely they could help us. My friend, Jack trailered us and Mackie did super. We were met by Dr. McGurrin and her team. The first thing they did after taking a very complete history, was to attach probes and set up an ECG, as the printout started, Dr. McGurrin asked one of her team to tell her what it showed, he hesitated but finally said, "it shows that this horse is in heart failure". I felt my knees buckle, someone grabbed me and Dr. McGurrin handed me a box of tissue, she said, "you are going to hear lots of talk today, please try to be calm, when I have gathered all my information we will sit down and discuss it together" There were lots more tests. With all of the poking, probing and tests Mackie remained relaxed and calm. We took him back to a stall and went to discuss his case. Dr. McGurrin explained that typically horses do not show signs of heart condition, particularly racehorses, that is why you hear the horror stories about them dropping dead at the track. She felt in Mackie's case this was a very long standing problem, and eventually his heart just got to the point where it could no longer keep up. She wanted to assure me and of course, Dr. Cook that we did not miss anything, they just don't give any indication until it is often too late. She said sometimes drugs help, but in Mackie's advanced case she did not recommend it. I asked if she was prepared to help us that day, she said yes, I agreed to let him go as long as she allowed me to stay with him. She asked if I needed a bit of time with him first, when we were alone I explained to him that it was time, that I would be there and to please trust me one last time. I held him, I stroked his neck and told him how very loved he was, my face and my voice where the last he saw and heard. Sure ruined my make up that day, the ride home was terrible, Jack kept saying "let it out kid" I did...Dr. Cook was on the answering machine when I got home telling me how sorry he was and that he was glad Jack was with me, I did the right thing. Dr. MGurrin sent me a copy of the autopsy along with Mackie's halter a lovely braid of his tail and a plaster imprint of his hoof with his name. She said she removed and preserved his heart, she uses it for teaching purposes. I get great comfort from that. I learned 2 things that day, 1. Mackie never gave up, his heart did, 2. it is just a body, his spirit lives on, this is for you Mackie, I love you, we will meet again. If you feel like you know Mackie, then this month has been a success, thanks to all who supported us, special thanks to the dogs that came by every day to vote, Love Donna Lee & Mackie

Thanks to everyone that voted us HOTD, we are so excited, we are getting close to the end of the month, I still have lots of story to tell. We left you a vote this afternoon. When things started to go wrong, at first I didn't know what the issue was, mostly because it was not consistent, some days everything was great but other times it was like Mackie had two left front feet. I can't describe it any other way, he stumbled quite a bit, I know lots of horses stumble on occasion, but remember, I knew this horse, and this was not just a stumble. We had his farrier check him, we checked saddle fit, we looked at teeth, we had corrective shoeing done to help with breakover. The strange thing was it was not all the time, I lunged him and tried to see it, it was like he didn't know where to put his feet. Years earlier Dr. Cook gave me a book entitled Lameness in Horses, he has since lived to regret that....I read that book everyday, and when it got to where I felt we needed Dr. Cooks expertise, I called him and said "can you come and look at Mackie? I think he has navicular" Talk soon, Love Donna Lee

Good Morning, here is a vote and a wish that everyone had a wonderful Christmas Day. Thank You so much for HOTD, this will help us on our HOTM journey.
Mackie had just turned 9 in the spring of 2004 and I brought him home in August, the next spring we dealt with all the health issues, which we overcame. Spring 2006 came and believe me I was terrified about his vaccinations. Dr. Cook had decided to premedicate plus we broke them up and did them over a few days rather than all at once. I watched him like a hawk, I bet I took his temp on the hour...poor Mackie. All went well, our riding also went well, we were working so well together, I had him doing small courses of just xrails, but still it was great fun. I had managed to put a few pounds on him, race horses tend to be a bit too slim for me. Life was good. funny how it can change so quickly. Love Donna Lee & Mackie

Good Icy Morning, we did not get it as bad a Toronto is your vote. Mackie had many health issues ranging from things like "scratches" on that white foot, to a couple sessions of mild colic, altho when you are in it, it does not seem mild. He had choke once, very scary and then there was the day that he got a bee sting in the side of his face, see why I always antihistamine on hand Marion...But thru all this we continued to ride and ride well. I started him over some xrails to help him be confident in his canter, remember Standardbreds are punished for canter, no breaking gait at the track. And of course, Dr. Cook was getting to know him very well. Have a great day, Love Donna Lee & Mackie.

We are trying to get our votes and blogs done before we lose power, we had freezing rain all night and forecast for all day too, yuk. Thanks again for supporting us, we love it. When spring arrived I could not wait to get my boy going, we had a wonderful winter of just getting to each other. His movement was much different than Sterl May, I posted a couple of pics, he had a lovely long stride. He was smooth even at trot. Trouble started with his spring vaccinations, first he had a reaction to either tetanus or rabies, we know because Dr. Cook, gave both of those in the hip, and the West Nile in the neck. Mackie seemed off within hours of the shot, sometimes not uncommon, but by the next morning he was running a temp, and he was not wanting to move. We tried hot compresses, but when he started to swell at the injection site, Dr. Cook came and we started him on antibiotics. I called Kathy and she said he had never had an issue.. Remember I said if it wasn't for BAD LUCK I'd have NO LUCK. Well, it got worse, Mackie now had a swelling the size of a soft ball on his rump, and he was getting 2 injections a day of the meds. On the second day, didn't he react to the antibiotic, YES HE DID. Next step, Dr. Cook changed the meds and decided that the abscess had to be opened. When the pressure was released, it literally expolded in Dr. Cooks face, and it hit the ceiling of the barn, that must have felt so good for Mackie. This procedure had to be done twice and there were almost daily visits from Dr. Cook, remember it isn't about the money... cha ching....We finally got this mess all cleared up and decided that he would have to be premeditated before any vaccination in the future. Have a great day, talk soon, Love Donna Lee & Mackie

Good Morning my friends, thank goodness we missed the most of the freezing rain, we got plain rain, but more is on the way today. We left an early morning vote.
I felt that getting Mackie in late August was a perfect time, I still had some nice weather to ride, that year I think I was still riding some in early December. And then, because I don't ride in the winter, we could use that time to really get to know each other. It was a wonderful winter. I think one of the things I loved most about him was his calm manner, he was a very affectionate horse and he got along so well with Sterl May and little Jackie. They were like the 3 musketeers,
I just so enjoyed watching them. I guess David was right, I was at the barn A LOT. Have a great weekend, Love Donna Lee & Mackie

Good Morning, early vote. Mackie arrived in late August, his feet had been trimmed and he was up to date on vacs. Sterly had laid out the barn rules and he was quite at home with us. He had, as I said had extensive ground work done. I was never big on lungeing, but I did with him because I needed to rebuild my confidence, he was a absolute pleasure to work with and riding him seemed effortless after my time with Bray. Things were going super for us and I hoped for Bray as well. However it was not to be. More tomorrow. Thanks for the help with HOTM, Love Donna Lee & Mackie

Hello my friends, and thanks again for the wonderful support, we are so happy. We left votes today. By the time I got home from work that day, Sonya had Mackie in a small 1 acre paddock with Sterl May and little Jackie. Sterl May had everything under control. She was telling Mackie just how things work around this place, she put him in the far corner and made him stay there, everytime he tried to approach, she pushed him back, sometimes all she had to do was look at him. By supper time as we watched the interaction, she was letting him closer bit by bit. It was looking like I had a happy little herd. Have a great day, talk soon, Love Donna Lee and Mackie

Good Morning, I slept in until 4:30, Charlie and Sterly are having their warm buckets. We are leaving votes and great thanks for the overwhelming support, special thanks to the Dogs from DC, you guys are amazing. Today's story is about Mom's and best friends. Remember at the time I found Mackie the horses were not at home. I rented a barn and 5 acres of pasture a mile and half down the road, plus I still had the expense of Sterly and Jackie, both retired. Even tho Mackie was looking like a perfect choice there was one itsy, bitsy problem, $$$$. Our rule (me and David) my horses, my money. My Mom said, how much, I said about half, she wrote me a cheque and said "David doesn't need to know about this, you are happier when you have a horse, I want to do this", I said" I'll pay you back" she said "you bet you will" Love you Mom. Next I arranged for the trailering, Mackie was about 2 1/2 hours NW of me and Bray was going about an hour SE of me. Just one more itsy, bitsy problem, I had to work the day it was scheduled. Step up Sonya, she said she would be at the barn, meet the trailer, unload Mackie, load Bray and stay with him until I got home. Love you Sonya. So the night before, I got Bray all buffed up, told him he was going on a new adventure and that I would never forget him, I said my goodbyes. To be continued, Love Donna Lee and Mackie

We left a thank you vote, I have been getting up at 2:30 in the morning to get my blog written and do some votes, I am so happy to tell Mackie's story. Interesting fact the Magnificent Albatross was Sterly's grandsire, he was also Mackie's grandsire. Mackie came from a pretty good racing background here is a little info on his Sire. Cam Luck
Camluck was an awesome member of Canadian trainer Robert McIntosh’s “Dream Team”of pacers, which included champions Artsplace and Staying Together. His fame, however, came not only from his accomplishments as a racehorse, which saw him win over $1 million and 26 races, but as one of the most prolific stallions to ever stand at stud in Canada. His first nine crops old enough to race had accumulated more than $100 million and include 322 offspring with records of 1:55 or faster and ten millionaires. Good afternoon, we so much appreciate the support, thanks, we left a vote,
After we got home I bet I watched that video a 100 times, I called Kathy and told her I wanted him. Mackie came from a racing from in Michigan, Kathy got him straight from the track, I was very grateful because she did tons of ground work with him. His manners were impeccable. Kathy was very sad to lose him, however she had been in a very bad accident and as a result had lost the use of her hands, she lost her drivers licence and had to let her horses go. I felt very certain that she was an honest person and Mackie was exactly what she said he was. At about the same time I had found what I thought was a perfect match for Bray. She was a young intermediate rider BUT, Bray would be in a very large show barn, show would have tons of support around her. It would be a good atmosphere for my "MR FULL OF HIMSELF" Thanks for helping Mackie with your votes and visits, we appreciate it and I am enjoying telling his story, Love Donna Lee

Here is a Cold, Cold Canadian vote, I checked out a few more horses, but nothing really turned my crank. I heard about one that sounded good, but she was a couple of hours away, so I found two more in that area to look at and Sonya and I made a day of it. I went to the first one which had originally sounded sooooo good, when we arrived she was NOTHING like they had represented, she was the prettiest horse I had ever seen, but zero training at 6. He said take her home if you don't love her bring her back. We left. The next one was a possibility, Sonya liked him more than me. He was a bit too much up, I rode him but felt like I was fighting him, really strong in the bridle, he was alright, but not great. By now I'm tired and frustrated and I didn't want to bother with the third horse. But Sonya said we came all this way let's go. So we did, we got lost, two phone calls later we found the place. I'm tired, a little bit cranky and I'm already sure I won't like this horse. His owner was the nicest lady, so very quiet and easy to talk to. When we walked into her barn Mackie was in x-ties. He was so relaxed, so calm and so gentle looking. I instantly loved his looks, we took a bit of time to chat and get acquainted. His Mom lounged him, and then I rode him. Sonya had brought the camera so we videoed him, we thanked her and I said I would go home and talk it over, I'd call her in a couple of days.
I'm pretty sure I talked about him the whole way home, guess what I said when I called her the next day???? to be continued. Thanks to everyone that has supported us, we are so happy, Love Donna Lee & Mackie

As you know most Standardbreds come off the track due to injury, that doesn't mean that they are finished, many go on to have great careers as trail horses, companion horses, Western or, English, basically they can do what any horse can do. So my search continued, because of the amount of riding I like to do and because I wanted to do some jumping I was pretty careful about the injury's, so any hock or suspensory stuff was out. I looked a quite a few and also during that time I was screening prospective buyers for Bray. That needed to be the right person for sure. Actually Audra, horse shopping is the only kind of shopping I like. Tomorrow we meet Mackie. Thanks for supporting my Angel Sassy Mac, Love you all, Donna Lee & Mackie

oh Chrisi I love your new picture as well :) are you at the lake? I ride Lake Whitney all the time. It has 3200 acers! ☀ The sun was shining after work yesterday and it was wonderful. I let the horses out in to turnout #1 & #2 and they went to grazing right away, thought they would run and play but nope…graze, graze, graze :) Whinny’s, love & hugs to all ☀ Forever in our hearts ♡ sweet Angel Peekaboo ✞

♡♥♡ Wishing all of my horse family a blessed and wonderful Thanksgiving holiday! We will be removing the horse’s blankets tomorrow. I will sure be glad of that. We are expecting Sunny skies all through the weekend. I enjoyed feeding and sitting in the barn while they ate yesterday until it started getting dark, the temps dropped quickly…I am off work a few days so I will phone vote as many as possible! Whinny’s, hugs & love to ya…

☆ I silent voted everyone yesterday; blogged on contest horses. Yes, I did not want to phone type everyone because I was tired from a very busy week at work. It was sunny & windy and it sure helped to dry things up a little. We have been hit pretty hard with rains so I was thankful. I brushed, picked hoofs & fly sprayed the herd. I then worked from the ground with Deacon. Just little things, backing, flexing to each side and walk, trot then I took him outside the property to graze on some very pretty grassy area. Then they all 3 were assigned yard work to perform: mowing & weed eating! Have a wonderful weekend! It’s Caturday =^.^=
