How We Met

He is my daughter's horse and I took care of him when she was in college. Originally we got him for her to jump and show. He came to the barn where she took lessons and he was too skinny, and needed a lot of work. A perfect project for her!

Nov 2011 - Comet moves to a new stable and loves his new home.
2/13/13: Comet's nice stable is closing, so he'll be on the road again once we find a new place!
FEB Update: Comet's found a new stable, will be moving by end of the month. :)
2/24/13: Comet arrived at his new stable Sunday evening. He settled into his stall and seems contented. A good sign.
July 31, 2014 - Comet goes to new owner and job at the stable where he was being boarded. We will miss and still love you, Comet Chaser. The most recent 2 photos are Comet at his new home.

Baby watch is still on. I though with all the storm weather we are having it would be born, probably today, when we run to a small family doings, when I am not here to watch or help. Skys are very dark with rolling clouds last night, lots of thunder and lighting, but not much rain.

My old farrier always told me to geld the horses in the fly season, because the flys keep them moving. Just not when it was either cold or rainy....that is what kept going threw my mind, when I called to cancel. I also keep SMZ on hand, which is an old med, long before penicillin came out. Once when I got a filly off the meat truck, I had her quarantine, but somehow, my filly got near her, and of course touched noses, so I had two now to keep away from everyone else. I used SMZ's and penicillin together at the first sign of strangles, neither of them came down with it. Rainy and hot here too, but not unbearable. Hope you have a nice long weekend.

Mistit still has not had her baby, and I had to cancel the colts, Pickles and Clippers gelding because it was raining and calling for rain for the next 4-5 days, which is bad for newly gelded horses because then they tend to stand around instead of walking, so the can swell up very badly. But still on schedule for next Thursday.

Monitoring Scruffy. He hates the cone. Getting harder to trick him into taking his medication. Guess he's figured out it's hidden in his food. Sadie got out. Austin accidentally left the gate open. Had to go to a neighbor's, in the dark, to get her. She went to visit their horse. We got her home, safely. She was such a butt. She and the other horse whinnied back and forth. It was sad. They both are alone. I think Sadie's missing Scruffy now that he's staying inside. She's good, though, bad but good. Lol. Leaving more love and a vote.

My goodness. I need to make it on HC more often. Scruffy's doing better. I took him out, last night, to potty. Took the cone off and was surprised to see how much better he did without it. He walked some and wagged his tail. If I would live by his example, find time to wag my tail during rough spells, I'd be a better person. Animals are inspirational. No, baby yet, but by the piles of "horse apple" in the corner, I would say she is cleaning out her system.
Have to put together all the things to have ready for tomorrow, not alot but need halters, ropes, clean towels for the colt's eyes, and I told Mistit to wait until the vet is here to have her baby.
Suppose to rain, so need a area inside ready too.

Well, Thursday is the date set for gelding. Going to get both little boys done, Pickles and Clippers. Gave tetanus shots, and making sure I have everything ready. Did not break the news to them. Pickles still is not good at being tied, but alot better than what he was. Mistic got her shots to protect her new foal as well. Been keeping her in at night, just incase, but May 23 was the earliest date, and in early June about the latest. Her bag is hard, but not painful to touch. It is suppose to rain the next 4 days or so, and I would hate to have to run between the rain drops to check in the middle of the night

Our dog, Scruffy, was attacked, late Sunday night, by one of the neighbors' dog. Possibly a pit mix. Scruffy got chewed up pretty bad. He's wearing the 'lampshade', has staples and is sedated. Can't get him to eat, drink or take his medication. The vet said he's not walking because of, either the surgery or the sedative shot they gave him. He ate some grilled chicken before we left for the vet. Hoping his appetite is back Tuesday. He's got a long way to go to heal. He's so sociable. He goes over to the egg ranch and shares the employees' lunches. He probably likes to hang out with the prisoners that work there, too. He gets out by climbing the fence, literally. or jumping it. I can't handle chaining him. Too heartbreaking. For now, he's in the house, and hopefully, after he heals, too. Been afraid he'd get ran over. The dog has disappeared. I haven't seen him since he attacked Scruffy. So aggressive. I'm taking care of the bill. He was out which makes it my responsibility. Don't think the neighbor has any money, anyway. His single wide is set up in a way that breaks permit laws, including being a single wide. Going to hush and leave lots of love and a vote.

I got a small kick in the shin from Clippers, because when we got home from helping our grandson, Tristan move and get things ready for his schooling, (going to linesman school) the goat...still no name picked out, was in the mini's pen, and of course as soon as he seen his ma, he starts running to me yelling maaa maaa maaaa like he had not see me since this morning. Well, all the minis started running too and Clippers is trying to keep Mr. Goat out of the feed pans and I got nick in the leg. Well, then I had to yell at Clippers, NO, and kept him away from the feed pans for a few minutes. The goat with no name is sure a a except artists. Or I forgot to tie the door shut....most likely that. This morning I was walking Mr Goat around and Whisper actually came up to him, of course snorting and blowing, but she seem me with him so all was OK. Went to Far/Fleet and all the things on my list they did not have except cat food. All the critters put their order in and luckily I always buy enough so I never run out. No, medichick feed except in a 4-5 pound bag, which would hardly pay to bring home, usually I buy 50##s. No Safeguard feed, that I buy for the minis. At least when we got home, the sun was out. Left this morning with frost windows on the car, and temps at 28. It is going from 25 up to 80 tomorrow. Wisconsin weather!!

Between getting the goat, a wether, who must think I am his Mom, all he says is MaMaMama....smile emoticon And the guinea pig, named Raisin. and I do not have his pen/cage ready yet. Guinea hens that do not want to get along with each other, and two turtles that need to go outside, but with our temps still in the 20's in the morning, I do not want to take the chance on them getting too cold. All 22 of my tomato plants froze, even with being covered. And the little ponies (3) young ones ran right threw the electric fence this morning, I think they are afraid of the goat, who is still in the shed. I guess, everything sounds normal here.......wink emoticon

Poor Mistic her belly is getting bigger and lower. Hopeful she is listening when I read her "Blessed are the Broodmares" I think my reading puts her to sleep. Well, have to think of a good name for the new goat, he is about a year old, blackish in color, no horns, and better like weeds. If pulling, chopping, spraying, mowing does not work, I will try a goat, he will be the fattest goat by the end of summer. Mike was not too happy about him coming...I think today. Wait until he finds out I am getting a guinea pig. Our Homer died last year, at the age of 8 nearly 10. Best part he comes with his own house, so in the winter he can be up stairs with me. Mike gets alot of surprises.....:)

Sadie was a good girl, Thursday. She did give the farrier some attitude. He rubbed her neck and said she's a spoiled brat. She is. She took her shot without a problem and didn't fight the deworming. Still working on the outdoor stove, it is working, "but" now the water is not coming around threw out the house. We have hot water heat, and someplace in a pipe there must be a airlock. Here I thought our house would be warm tonight, but maybe not. Weather is miserable outside. Still rainy and cold. Moved one batch of chicks to the calf hutch, moved the bigger ones to the little room in the chicken coop, so soon they will be going outside. Making room in the back of the shed so ponies can have a pen on that side, has large siding door, and then their pen Mistic will get because it has a large pen outside under the lento where when she foals, I can put them to keep them safe. May 23 is due date.

Well, those 2 nice days we had, must have been our summer. Since last week, our morning temps are in the 30's, now they are talking "winter mix" for this week, that means snow/rain. Our outdoor stove, is being worked on, so no heat or hot water since last Thursday. Grass is growing, and steers (4 of them) finally got to go out on a small pasture. Whisper and the little ones have been going out a bit everyday, but mostly weeds and not a good pasture. We want them to eat it down, then spray all the weeds and disk a bit, and reseed.

A "late" Happy Mother's Day to you, even if you are only the mother of 4 legged ones.
Busy weekend....hatched out 42 out of 48 eggs, for me that is great. Sold 8 guinea hens on Saturday and 15 chicks, but out poor outdoor stove is taking all that money to fit it. Now the best new, Pickles finally progress to a point that he can have his halter OFF. Does not run away, and no long afraid of hand movements....sometimes, he moves his head, but not his feet. Been following me around, like I am his best friend. Negative side of no halter, is....I can not tell Pickles and Clippers apart(from just their heads), without looking at their feet. :)

Hubby was gone yesterday, drove with a friend to the VA in Minneapolis, so I never had even 1 dirty dish to wash until he got home. Got so much work done. Emptied, (again 3rd time) rain water out of the sunk in bath tub, that is used for the summer fish pond, used water to give to all the newly planted trees, so some of the water carrying was a bit of a hike. After filling the horse tanks, pulled the hose over to the fish pond and filled it, of course first had to clean it, because of all the leaves and sticks that fall in. Went and caught all 7 little gold fish, by hand, and put them in. I try to make it as natural as possible. With rocks and later plants....the rocks are so "if" some little animal falls in, at least it can climb out on the rocks. Put turtles back in the pen, and added more rocks so it is easier for them to crawl out, that plastic does not give them any traction. Dragged the hose over and made muddle puddles for the pigs, then watered all the tomatoes plants, all 22 of them. Still have more to put out, but they are still to small. I carry them outside to set in the sun, and then back in for the night. Baby chicks got to go out in the sunshine in the outdoor pen, but sure were hard to round up to go back inside at 6, All the tomatoe plants, have to be uncovered in the morning, then recovered when it started getting hot, yep, it really got hot yesterday, up to 83 at one time. We go from 30 to 89+ in one day. Winter jacket to T-shirt. Cleaned out white guinea pen, brushed ponies, worked on picking up Pickles feet....he was very naughty when farrier was here...picked up his feet and his whole bod went with. But Clippers did the same thing, and his feet were picked up hundreds of time. Moved saddles to the shop so I could clean them later, took the huge plastic that covered them, out into the ponies pen, and used feed tanks and rocks,to hold down corners and then put its of feed on the plastic so the ponies could learn to walk on the plastic. Sure enough, girls are braver than boys. Paisley, and Mistic just walked right out, Pickles and Clippers had to check it out somewhat, before they went for treats. I brought the two huge balls out for them to play with, they like to follow them as they roll. Pickles and Paisley had them in their pen all winter. Later when it was dark, I went to lock chickens in, and all 3 of the younger ponies were laying down, so I sat between them, and rubbed them. Pickles just laid out flat and I got to rub his tummy, first time he did that. Usually he wants to get up, but tonight he felt comfortable just laying there. Did I clean house, well I did wash one load of clothes and hung them outside. That counts, somewhat, for housework, right!!

How is your week going?? Been planning on brushing everyone up to help with winter fuzzy wuzzy being gone, but just never have much time. Farrier is coming on Thursday the 5th, so want to have it done. Have to put a new door with hinges on one small chicken coop, clean out the fish bath tub pond, had it emptied or nearly, when it rained for a few days, and now it is full again. I care the water to newly planted little trees, which I stole from our woods, work on a fencing for the 2mt old chicks, finish clicking the rabbits tangled fur, she is long haired, and I never finishing doing her. Hatching out another batch of baby chicks, the other 15 are leaving on Saturday along with 8-10 guinea hens, then the rest can start free roaming. The hens have been laying and collected 36 of them and have set them 2 days ago, then will add 12 pheasant eggs in 2 more days, and 3 days after that fill in with some chicken eggs, depending on space. Still air incubator and I need to turn the eggs at least 4-5 times a day. It will e nice to have enough money to of course buy more feed, and not have to take from a different fund, might even have enough to pay into the fund for farrier work and shots.

Still cool this morning, but no frost. Planted more tomatoes yesterday, plus threw in squash seeds, that I saved from last yrs, I know that it is not a good idea, but it will help keep the weeds down is some troubled areas, until we have time to level off these areas. Most of them have stumps and old junk areas. But if I don't put something there, nasty weeds take over. Going to look at some Scottish Highland heifer calves tonight. Also set the guinea hen eggs in the second incubator, and of course even after running it for 3 ddays to make sure temps stay steady, they are too high last night, then too low, now it seems to level off. In 3 days will set pheasant eggs, and then fill in with chicken eggs, a few days after that, so they should all hatch out together....if I planned it right.

I will post the pictures of the two turtles on Kisses page if I find some time today. The water in the pond was super cold for them, and a shaded area. Pen is about 5ft tall, 6 w/8-10 feet long. I did replant the iris, added Stella O Day, and threw in some flower seeds. It already had hosas, Snow on the Mt, and another small ground cover plant, now all we need is warm weather so they can stay out in their new home. Temps were barely 40 when I came in from feeding.
Pickles is really starting to get better, let me walk him all the way to the pasture today, even if everyone else had run ahead of him, near the gate, he started to get antsy, so I walked him the other way, and then back to the gate. He is still so fuzzy with baby fur.

We did get the pond in, still have to move the cage over the top, but want to plant flowers and plants where the cage will go, but will have to steal violets, and day lilies from other areas because all I have in this area is Snow on the Mountain. Yes, we still have cold or cool weather mornings have been down to 28, but usually around 34. Spring will make it, I know, because my guinea hens have started laying.
