How We Met

When my lease ran out on the pony I was leasing my parents told me I could get my own pony. We looked around and found Gypsee. She was starved and abused before and had been seized by the SPCA. She was bought from an auction by a summer riding camp, only to find out that she was un-ridable and would bolt and throw whoever tried to ride her. She was so sweet though so we bought her. I was terrified of her. We put lots of time and work into her though and found out that she had fractured her poll before and had severe nerve damage and had a lot of neck and back pain that was causing her to bolt. We had a chiropractor out and she was a completely different pony after that. We bonded and I trust Gypsee with my life now and vice versa. She's currently blind in one eye from moon blindness, and that took a bit of adjusting too, but we've both gotten used to it, and still ride and jump and she's gotten so good, no one can even tell (:.

Few things about Whiskey: The 1st few times I rode Whiskey my arms were wore out and tired. I was thinking “man what in the world”. He did not and could not Neck rein. He was very hard in the mouth, no flex in his neck but Karla & Tim told me he needed that kind of work. Tim felt he didn’t ride him in collection and so on. He was Tim’s first horse. We would get under the canopy of the trees on the trails and he would do great with my seat aids which I was happy about. That is how I ride him, with my seat and leg aids. I guess we all are supposed to do that RIGHT!!!! I then started planning my next few months of teaching him to neck rein. I just went back to the beginning and put him in an “O” ring snaffle and took it from there. Every day his personality would shine and he entertained Cliff & me with his antics! Thank you for your support we appreciate it!

☆ As I have mentioned before, I have learned so much with Deacon and of course Whiskey & Rocket. Each horse has brought knowledge to me that has its own value. I think we all carry a special place for that 1st horse that is hard to describe ♥ the 1st year ½ I went trail riding, I experienced penning & cutting cows but my favorite has always been trail riding. Have a great Thursday ~Whinny’s & hugs ☆

Saw your posts on Miss Troubles site. Wow, you have done an amazing job with Gypsee. Can't remember the name of the movie, but it was about a dressage horse that went blind and still was able to compete. They just have to learn to trust!

Hey thanks!
She is great getting on/off both sides, she has never spooked at that. I like to think that I have a good amount of patience working with her. Ive done lots of ground work before I started riding her, like waving bags and the whip all over her and she is used to it now because she knows i wont hurt her, it never really was a problem with the bags/whip. Its usually like unexpected things, like a bucket that has been sitting by the round pen forever or a window of the house gets her a lot. She totally freaked out when I tried leading her over a trot pole on the ground, but eventually I got her over it. I'll try some of the new exercises that you mentioned. I would prefer to ride with someone but Im the only one out there, maybe I can get my buddy to help me sometimes. And also the only flat ground is a round pen and a lot thats muddy most of the time that has 4 colts in it. The owner has 60 acres of land (mostly hills) but he needs to bushhog it, because the weeds are over my head, then maybe I could ride her in the flat parts of that. You have really encouraged me to keep going with her! And I appreciate your time and advice!
Have you noticed if Gypsee's hearing is more sharp? Ive noticed that Trouble spooks at noises a lot more than normal horses. I try to talk to her a lot while riding and calmly talk to her when shes jumpy and snorting. I thought about blinders too and wondered if they would help. Yeah, i would LOVE to take her to shows next year, that was the whole plan that I could work with with her than show her and try to sell her for her owner. Thank you again!

Come visit me, <>Pony Jack<> & Fancy.

wow thank you so much for all the encouragement!
sorry i dont have face book.
i just would like to know how you handle any spooking, normally if I was riding a horse that had vision id ride up to it and let them sniff whatever spooked them. but with her having half vision, she cant see too good, and thinks to quick. I have only put a month of training on her so she is far from broke. Im training her at my friends house for her owner. i asked him is i could train her and show her next year, so i dont have any money invested in her. thanks again!

Sing & Cross Creek Horses told me about you and your blind mare. Ive been training a mare (Miss Trouble) for a month and turns out she is mostly blind in one eye and doesn't have good vision in the other eye. Probably due to an old injury. She is very spooky out side of the round pen, and i need advice on how to work with her, i really wanted to train her over the winter and then show her next year.
Thank you so much for any advice!

Good Morning,So glad your summer was good, I understand about the eyesight, Sterly is losing hers as well, mostly old age, but also as a result of her Cushing's. We were under a severe weather warning last night, it got a bit stupid, but nothing damaging, for sure cooled off, yesterday was the hottest day of the summer, so you know where my guys were, yup, inside with fans. Charlie had a case of hives, likely from an insect bite or a weed, couple doses of antihistamine and he is good as new. It is still raining now, but it is suppose to clear later this morning, here is a vote and a hope for a nice weekend. Love Donna Lee

is it winter yet???
Hi, I saw your blog on Susan's page, how have you been? Did you come home for summer? How was your school year, what are you riding? The thing with Sterly's breathing is due in part to scar tissue in her lungs from a respiratory virus years ago, that ended her racing career. Lungs don't regenerate. Over the years it has gotten a bit worse, at times like season change and high humidity and high UV. She is for sure a Canadian horse she loves her winter, bring on the cold. She looks like a grizzly bear and she can breath, does it get any better... Ventipulimin is a bronchodilator, it opens up the airways, it is used for horses that have COPD or heaves or even asthma, keep in mind that Sterly is not a complainer, so we have to watch her closely, what you will see is, flared nostrils and short quick shallow breaths, get her in where it is cool with the big fan on her and she settled back to normal within 10 minutes. I only use the meds if she can't settle on her own. I'm sure the Cushings does not help matters, 'cause she has all that extra hair...I trimmed her this summer, but this year it just grew back pretty much as soon as it was gone, I have to prepare, everyday I still have her is a blessing, Left a vote, Love Donna Lee

had a scare this morning with godiva getting in to the feed room. I apparently didn't clip the door latch. :( I took her to the vet. she got tubed and some "biosponge" administered. watching her now and no hay/grass for 24 hours. she's pooped several times and drunk some water. seems to be in good spirits. the biosponge is supposed to absorb any toxins released by the bacterial overgrowth that may result from a glut of feed. pray she's okay. tomorrow will tell.
are you back to the university soon?

Glad to hear you've been getting some riding in in spite of your long hours at work. Our ACTHA Challenge went well, he popped in a buck at the very beginning, then got down to business and completed the obstacles. We didn't place, but had a nice score and we both had fun. Cool summer so far for us, but now starting to heat up and will soon be in triple digits. Cheryl & Cisco

I've been missing in action due to work and lots of riding lessons and make ups this week. I am so impatient with the newbies who cannot figure out the simplest of tasks. vented to Michael and he said, "mom you just have to stay calm and remember they're helping pay for your horses". I need that kind of "attitude adjustment" when I'm really tired and grumpy. I used godiva for a 9 yr old who's very small. remember she's been on stall rest, then turned out since Nov 2013? she was a perfect angel! only made one little rein grab and head toss. I love that pony! we're soaked with much needed rain. I believe we are now caught up to where we should be in average rain fall. that will make the grass grow and the horses fat! love it! are you home for the summer??

The more we rode the better Whiskey got at reining. The more miles and trails the easier it got on me and him. I discovered Whiskey loves the water. The picture today was taken 8/2012. We can get in a few minutes but I have to move him out or he will try to lie down, but I can take him right back in and then he settles to stand, doesn’t swim yet with me. We are still working toward that. We haven’t camped out in nearly 2 years, and that is when I can try to swim with the horses. It’s too hard to try swimming when I day ride because of the drive home (driving wet is no fun) -ha ha =) Deacon is my true water baby-he will actually swim with me and never try to lie down. I have also found that Whiskey hates for any type bug to fly in his face-so needless to say while we ride in the open if there are grass hoppers or butter flies, regular fly’s he tosses his head slightly. It doesn’t bother me now but it used to. Thank you for your support we appreciate it!

whiskey is sending hugs & love
Monday we left off about Whiskey’s color and me with 5 hundred questions for Karla! Here we go…That poor girl had never met me before and I could not shut up :) I then walked over and looked Whiskey right in the eye and he looked back into mine and my heart sunk. His beauty was striking and the color was outstanding. He had a smart, sharpness about him-I’m sure he was thinking “what in the world is she doing”. The ride finally got underway; usually everyone has me ride out front and calls me the trail boss! Deacon is a faster walking horse but can ride in the middle or behind after the first hour or so. Well, here comes Rio & Whiskey with their smooth selves!!! They just gaited their smooth self’s right past me & Deacy. I watched Whiskey and noticed he didn’t quite move the same as Rio but still a difference from a QH. 2 hours into the ride we decided to rest a few minutes in a place we call “Carol’s lounge”. We have names for all our spots we ride to rest or to take a break out there because it’s so big. Thank you for your support we appreciate it!

I will explain how I came about choosing my Whiskey and Deacon so it takes us Wwway back~~~~~ lol ~ I got out of the Navy in 1986. I knew I wanted to get a horse at the time and I wanted to try barrel racing. I had a friend in California (last place I was stationed) that was running the circuit barrel racing and a boyfriend riding bulls so I guess that is what made me want to try barrels. I really just wanted a horse to care for and ride because I loved them so much. I moved back to Texas and started my search. I met a lady where I started working that raised quarter horses and she had a beautiful dark bay mare that I started riding, her name was Fanny. She was very gentle and easy to handle. My sister said I could put a fence up on her property and use their garage to convert into a stall and storage area. So I went to work with a few friends and converted this place and added one stall and a tack area. It took a few months to get everything ready so the lady let me make payments. Once she was paid off, and the property was ready I brought her home with me. Things just didn’t work out for Fanny & me. I’m sure you all can relate to the fact that some horses and humans are not a match. That is how it was with her, just didn’t feel right. The hunt was on and a new year began 1987 ~ Thank you for your support we appreciate it!

Generally healthy horses, they often live long lives but do have a tendency to be extremely "easy keepers".
