How We Met

I sold my last horse, Cisco, to someone who wanted a great first horse, and then went in search for a specific horse. I wanted a flashy horse. I didn't want a Chestnut or Bay unless they were painted or spotted. I wanted a horse that would give me a challenge, but not so much of one that I couldn't do it. Then my mom wanted me to get a younger horse so we wouldn't have the possible health issues of getting an older horse. Lo and Behold, we found Sidekick. When I went to go and see him he kicked out at me when lunging and bucked when riding but I still loved him. He had a personality to match his color and he was very sweet and well behaved for his old owner. So we bought him.

When we brought him home, he was quite a horse. He almost became to much for me to handle. He would drag me down the aisle, buck every 5 steps and run, broke a crosstie, and pulled everyone around. Eventually I had enough I started getting more assertive, and with the help of my friend, spent hours working on him vices. Once Si figured out that I wasn't taking any crud and when he was good he got rewarded, he became the well mannered horse I knew he was.

Since Horse Camp . . .
Haven't been on in a while! Sorry guys! Well, after horse camp we started working on free-lunging respect exercises before our riding workout and it has helped tremendously! By the time we were at the 4H Horse Show, he was manageable! We got a white in 9 - 10 Western Showmanship because the little stinker wouldn't trot! Never had that problem before! Then we also got a white in our 9 - 10 Stock Seat Equitation Class because we broke pattern, but it didn't matter to me because we got 2nd Blue in our Pleasure Class and qualified for State! I was told after the class that it was between me and the other Appy in the class. The only difference between us was our heads! Sidekick doesn't like to hold his head in one place, while Chief (the other Appy) holds his head low and consistent. We didn't feel like waiting any longer for the Trail Class so we scratched it.

So, I've always wanted to jump my horse, or just ride English in general so that is our next goal. I signed up for two english classes at State (as well as Western Pleasure) and am working over ground poles at home. Sidekick is still a little unsure of whether he should go fast or not but we're getting there!

Also, my friends and I bought Double Dan Horsemanship CDs and are starting that with our horses. We haven't even finished Exercise 2 in Level 1 but you have to start somewhere!

Until Next time! (Lets face it, it won't be until September after state is the past 2 months is any indication)

Post-Horse-Camp
This week I took Dork to a Horse Camp at Shotliff and it went pretty good. First we had a gymkhana clinic and he did ok. We can trot the patterns pretty well! Sidekick was wonderful on English Day and we even got to go over a few jumps! By the last day, Im pretty sure he was sick of being in his stall so he was extremely unruly. Overall im proud of him!
