Horse Slaughter Ban in the U.S.
We as horse people need to have a discussion. Its a hard topic to broach without stirring up deep emotions and harsh criticism. Well I am ready to take the heat to ensure there is a Plan "B" for all the horses out there that we owe a quality of life to for their centuries of service. Supporters of a ban on horse slaughter in its entirety do not understand what they are creating in their wake. Yes, I have seen the footage of horses in these facilities and have witnessed first hand the loading of horses on cattle liners destined for slaughterhouses in Southern Alberta. I have left the auction sobbing and heartache that I couldn't save them. Your ban on slaughter in the U.S. is making this worse. In fact export of your unwanted horses is up 148% coming into Canada and worse yet, 660% to Mexico. Most of the suffering of these majestic creatures happens during the loading and transport but you believe you are helping them. What happened to all the horses in N.M. that were waiting to be slaughtered at their Facilities? Do you think they are all getting proper care and feed now that they are just a liability to the operations owners? If you are going to ban slaughter, you better be thinking ahead as to where the public can take unwanted horses without a huge expense. Can all these supporters of this ban agree to set up places like the A.S.P.C.A. to drop off unwanted animals, similar to unwanted dogs? People will start to neglect any horses they cannot afford or have time for. We need to put into place a back up plan for the saturation of unwanted horses that is going to happen. When euthanasia is the only option, the cost is easily $500 for vet services and carcass removal. Out of the 4.6 million horse owners in the U.S., howmany of them have actually taken the responsibility of an aging unusable horse and taken the right steps to ensure its quality of life to the end. If the majority of horse owners believe in this concept, why are we not working harder to make dealing with unwanted horses accessible to the common horse owner who loves their animal but for financial or personal reasons, can no longer take care of it.
Can no compromise be had? Can you donate unwanted horses at your local shelter for adoption or rehabilitation? Maybe let these associations decide what to do with a dangerous or suffering animal. If they euthanize an animal, why not recycle the carcass by processing it into dogfood for the overcrowded shelters? In fact why not issue a tax deductible receipt for donating and old or crippled horse that an owner can no longer keep?
Am I starting to sound ridiculous? At least I'm starting a discussion and provoking some thought to a solution. Don't like my ideas? Good! I hope you have some good ones of your own along with the backlash.....
