Deacon would love your support for HOTM!
♡ When I got Deacon he had previously pastured on Bill’s brothers property with 3 other horses. All 3 others horses were taken in to have sarcoid tumors removed. Deacon had a small knot on his left flank that I had Doc Edward’s check out. He said to leave it alone until it started to change or he could remove for cosmetic reasons if I wanted. I choose to wait. I don’t show my horses and I wasn’t interested giving Deacon Surgery after just newly purchasing him. It didn’t bother him either. Several years ago I did have it removed. It started to change. Doc had learned how to also prevent future ones as well. This method is to take a small piece of the tumor and put it in the neck area. You can’t even tell where the cut on his flank was now. In his knot he actually had 2 small tumors in it.
Equine Sarcoid:

Sarcoid tumors are the most common skin tumor in horses. These tumors are unique in that they are the product of infection with Bovine Papilloma Virus (BPV), which is probably transmitted by flies. Many horses can be infected with this virus, but no two horses will express it in the same way. Tumor appearance and size can vary greatly between horses, and even on the same horse; similarly, response to different treatments can be highly variable. Tumors can originate at the site of a wound or tack rub, and originally present as a wound that isn't healing; on the lower limbs, they also are often mistaken for proud flesh. Though sarcoids are the most common skin tumor of horses, they are also one of the most misunderstood maladies of horses.

We have been having surprisingly low temps here this summer. Some days it feels more like fall! Right now its only 64 degrees and feels kind of chilly out. Not our typical hot, humid July weather! It looks like it may start getting warmer this weekend though. This morning Ethan woke me up at 4:00 am and said the horses are out! The gate was open for some reason and they were out grazing. I put some feed in a bucket and got them back in without any trouble. Last Saturday some people my aunt knows came to her place and their 2 little girls wanted to ride so I rode Dakota over for them to ride. They had a lot of fun and Dakota behaved himself. They will be coming out to my aunts every Saturday(they are keeping calves at my aunts) and their mom wants to pay me to give them riding lessons. So we will see how it goes! Any tips for what all I should teach them? I have done my 3 driving classes so now I need to wait 6 months and get my 40 hours of practice in before I can try to get my license. I drive to and from church and I am starting to enjoy driving. Got to go now, hope you all have a great weekend!

I want to thank you all for all the amazing support throughout the month of April. I hope you enjoyed his story and I surely hope I can tell you many more story’s in the future of he & I riding together…God bless you all…..I honestly did not realize how difficult and demanding running for HOTM could be until now! Not having a computer at home really made this challenging for me, so again I cannot say thanks enough, sending love to you & your herds!!!!!!!
Here is our finial tidbit on the Fabulous Rocky Mountain Horse Breed! In the early 1960s, Sam Tuttle managed the trail riding concession at the Natural Bridge State Park in Powell County, Kentucky. He had as many as fifty horses there, including TOBE. This stallion was often seen tied to the hitching post alongside all the mares. He became quite well known in the ten or so years he was ridden there. Besides breeding, TOBE was used as a trail horse. He carried Sam, and sometimes the trail guides who worked for Sam, with sure-footed ease over mountainous terrain for many years. Although Sam would allow other people to ride TOBE occasionally, it was always a ride closely supervised. He loved to show off his beloved stallion, but also kept a close eye on him. Everyone who rode TOBE enjoyed his gentle temperament and comfortable gait. It amazed people to think the well-mannered horse they were riding was indeed a breeding stallion.
TOBE was used for breeding until July of his thirty-fourth year, and he passed on his gait, disposition, and other great qualities to his offspring. It has been said that TOBE's progeny followed in his "perfectly-timed" footsteps. TOBE sired many fine horses before his death at the ripe old age of thirty-seven. One outstanding trait passed on was longevity, as many of his offspring were still breeding into their late twenties and early thirties.
Thank you for your support we appreciate it! Hoping to see him as the top horse tomorrow!!!!!

Doc said if Whiskey showed any signs of discomfort at that time to call right away. He is only allowed coastal hay and his feed for now. I started turn out Sunday 4/27and increase 10 min. intervals every couple of days. Now, here is what happened. We have been doing slow turn out for a while (over 8 weeks) and we left them out Wednesday night 4/09. Coleton (my son) had brought us some hay that we haven't fed before. It was pretty green but didn't think much about it. Doc says it is the combination of that hay and turned out that did this-but mainly that hay bale. The other horses are fine and Doc said because he is such an easy keeper/age that he just gorged himself...now all I can do is ask for prayers for my baby and a lot of positive thoughts. He is really doing so well from what I can see ♥ Today I give the last dose of bute and the next few days will really let me know how he is.
Even through the hard times of the Depression and World War II years, Sam Tuttle kept a sizable herd of thirty to forty horses on his farm. Sam is considered as the man most responsible for the survival of the Rocky Mountain Horse. TOBE was the primary Rocky Mountain stallion used in Sam's breeding program. In the 1950s, many people were selling their stallions, and the horse population in general was rapidly declining due to tractors and farm machinery available. Even so, breeders remembered TOBE, and he was always in demand for stud service. People brought their mares to TOBE from several different states, and he was as famous in Estill County as MAN O' WAR was in Lexington, Kentucky. Everyone who rode TOBE fell in love with him. TOBE's offspring were always in demand, and Sam never had any trouble selling all the Rocky Mountain Horses he could produce.
Thank you for your support we appreciate it!

weekend phone votes ♡
When I got home from work Friday (4/11/14-2 weeks ago) I noticed Whiskey was walking slow and didn't seem right. He has NEVER been sore after a trim but I thought this could be a first time...Brent (my farrier) had been out that morning and put shoes on Deacon and trimmed the other 2. As I watched I knew something was wrong and put a call into Doc Edwards (he specializes in horses only). I then gave Whiskey bute because he then kept laying down and I could tell he was in pain. I watched him drink water, I saw him pea & poop, I listened for guts sounds in his tummy so I knew he wasn't colicing. Doc finally called he wanted Whiskey in early Saturday morning 4/12/14. He assured me that giving the bute was fine and it was the right thing to do. He also knew how upset I was and again assured me that I had caught this in time but couldn't tell me anything until he saw him the next morning. Yes, founder is what it is…..Phone votes over the weekend, his story will continue Monday 4/28…..
The Rocky Mountain Horse Association's (RMHA) rendition of the history of the breed states there was a gaited colt brought from the Rocky Mountain region of the United States to the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains in eastern Kentucky around 1890. He was referred to as "the Rocky Mountain Horse" by the local Kentucky people because of the area of the country from which he had come. He is the horse credited for the start of the Rocky Mountain Horse breed. Little is known about this foundation stallion, but oral history indicated he was chocolate-colored with flaxen mane and tail, and he possessed a superior gait. The stallion was bred to the local Appalachian saddle mares in a relatively small geographical area and the basic characteristics of a strong genetic line continued. This prized line of horses increased in numbers as years went by, and these are the horses known today as Rocky Mountain Horses.

Whiskey has a fast walk that is like the true gait of a Rocky Mountain but it isn’t as pronounced like the other RM horses I see, it’s a little different. He has the smoothest gallop and run. He has the energy to go go go. He will go no matter how long you want to ride-his battery never seems to run out but that is the breed, again they started out as a utility horse!! Whiskey stays to himself; he doesn’t really hang with the other 2, only once in a while. Deacon picks him as a favorite for a day or 2 then they separate and Rocket is Deacons main herd mate. With a heavy heart and a lot of thought I have decided to change the rest of my HOTM run to include what happened with Whiskey starting the 11th of April. I will still include the RMH tidbits =)
The families of eastern Kentucky who owned these horses were not wealthy and could not afford to spend a lot of money on the upkeep of their horses. Unlike Kentucky Thoroughbreds that were typically owned by wealthy people, the gaited horses of eastern Kentucky received no special care, and as a result, most of the weak ones did not survive. These horses withstood the harsh winters of eastern Kentucky with minimal shelter, and they were often fed "fodder", a kind of rough silage. Some had to exist on whatever sustenance they could find. So, like deer, they ate the bark off trees when they were hungry. Only the horses that survived these extreme conditions lived to reproduce their kind.
Thank you for your support we appreciate it!

Whiskey’s mane & tail change colors several times in the year by going lighter then darker. His body color changes as well. He truly loves his bath time and grooming, he trailers well in any type I load him in, and will load without heisting at all. He is also my bareback horse. Perfect back for it so if I don’t feel like putting the saddle on I can always just get myself up on him and go at any time. He is the type that will come to you every time from the field or anywhere. I guess that’s the treat hound in him lol.
During the late 1800s and early 1900s, the rural inhabitants of eastern Kentucky considered these saddle horses to be horses for all seasons. They were sure-footed, easy-gaited, and the mount of choice for postmen, doctors, and traveling preachers. People used them for plowing small fields, herding cattle, traveling through the steep and rugged trails, and driving the buggy to church on Sunday. Horses were not a luxury, but a necessity. Every horse had to earn its keep and be extremely versatile. It was not a matter of having horses around to use every once in a while; these horses were worked hard, every day. At the end of the day they were exhausted, but possessed enough stamina to continue on, day after day.

My Whiskey boy has the antics of a comedian! In this picture I feel like he is saying “Sit Mom”. I was brushing him-you can see my boots towards his backend on the other side of him. He is so funny but yet so very gentle and lovable. He is in fact my “treat Hound”. He will do absolutely anything in the world to get a treat, cookie or carrot or anything to eat. If you show him how to do something and he knows you are going to give a treat he will try until he learns it to in fact get that treat. I have had so much fun with him. He will check me for a treat and if I don’t have one he will almost shrug me off with a turned head tossed in the air as if he is saying “I’m done with you, off you go child”
The Rocky Mountain Horse breed originated in the United States in the late 1800s, in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains of eastern Kentucky. At the time of its beginnings, there was no understanding of the need to document anything about these horses. The people living in this region were quite unaware that one day their utility horses would become the foundation of a special breed of horse. The existence of these horses was practically a secret for many years to all but the inhabitants of this region.
Have a wonderful evening. I will phone vote tomorrow and pick back up on Wednesday. Thank you for your support we appreciate it!

✞ Picking up from yesterday about him tossing his head about bugs. Sometimes I can make a pony tail in his fore lock and that helps a lot. I think he sees his hair sometimes and over reacts, big ol’ treat hound! As soon as we get under the trees on those trails he just stops tossing his head and settles right back into his awesome self. I will add Rocky Mountain facts to my blogs for the rest of our HOTM run. I hope you enjoy them =)
The history of the Rocky Mountain Horse from 1890 to the latter part of the 1900s carries little or no documentation and few facts that can be proven beyond the shadow of doubt. Everyone who personally witnessed the breed's beginnings (back to the 1800s) is deceased, and we have been left with only verbal history passed down from generation to generation. Thus, all that can be recorded at this point in time are the stories recollected by living descendants. Thank you for your support we appreciate it!

The more we rode the better Whiskey got at reining. The more miles and trails the easier it got on me and him. I discovered Whiskey loves the water. The picture today was taken 8/2012. We can get in a few minutes but I have to move him out or he will try to lie down, but I can take him right back in and then he settles to stand, doesn’t swim yet with me. We are still working toward that. We haven’t camped out in nearly 2 years, and that is when I can try to swim with the horses. It’s too hard to try swimming when I day ride because of the drive home (driving wet is no fun) -ha ha =) Deacon is my true water baby-he will actually swim with me and never try to lie down. I have also found that Whiskey hates for any type bug to fly in his face-so needless to say while we ride in the open if there are grass hoppers or butter flies, regular fly’s he tosses his head slightly. It doesn’t bother me now but it used to. Thank you for your support we appreciate it!

Today Whiskey is bowing on the 1 year anniversary of the West explosion. God bless our beautiful town our motto is “After West, forever forward”. God bless our town and God bless America! I continued to work with him and every now and then I still put the O ring on him and to keep him sharp. I am not all that good with all kinds of bits. I have not mastered the bit world-well, probably not a lot of horse things but I am on my journey and heading that way. I can ride Whiskey & Deacon both with just halters on but have never tired bridle-less yet. Another goal of mine after I finish getting my round pen larger and have a set up where it will work for us. Whiskey & I continued to push forward and of course everyday he got better and better. We were learning each other and I loved every minute of it. Phone votes tomorrow, I will get back to our story on Saturday. Thank you for your support we appreciate it!

it going to be another nice afternoon!
The 1st few times I rode Whiskey my arms were wore out and tired. I was thinking “man what in the world”. He did not and could not Neck rein. He was very hard in the mouth, no flex in his neck but Karla & Tim told me he needed that kind of work. Tim felt he didn’t ride him in collection and so on. He was Tim’s first horse. We would get under the canopy of the trees on the trails and he would do great with my seat aids which I was happy about. That is how I ride him, with my seat and leg aids. I guess we all are supposed to do that RIGHT!!!! I then started planning my next few months of teaching him to neck rein. I just went back to the beginning and put him in an “O” ring snaffle and took it from there. Every day his personality would shine and he entertained Cliff & me with his antics! Thank you for your support we appreciate it!

Here we go…That poor girl had never met me before and I could not shut up :) I then walked over and looked Whiskey right in the eye and he looked back into mine and my heart sunk. His beauty was striking and the color was outstanding. He had a smart, sharpness about him-I’m sure he was thinking “what in the world is she doing”. The ride finally got underway; usually everyone has me ride out front and calls me the trail boss! Deacon is a faster walking horse but can ride in the middle or behind after the first hour or so. Well, here comes Rio & Whiskey with their smooth selves!!! They just gaited their smooth self’s right past me & Deacy. I watched Whiskey and noticed he didn’t quite move the same as Rio but still a difference from a QH. 2 hours into the ride we decided to rest a few minutes in a place we call “Carol’s lounge”. We have names for all our spots we ride to rest or to take a break out there because it’s so big. Thank you for your support we appreciate it!

Whiskey would love your support for his HOTM run
In 2008 the decision was made after a talk with our boy’s and Cliff. It was time for me to get back on my horse journey. I purchased Deacon in March 23, 2008 and then bought Whiskey in May 2010. When I run Deacon I will tell more about the 1st 2 years back on my journey. Now that you have some back ground on me and my journey I will start Whiskey’s story with me. As many of you know I trail ride and use to camp with the horses all the time, now we just day ride. Hoping this spring sometime to camp again-fingers crossed =) It has been 2 years sense we have camped out with them. We would camp at Mccown or Plowman Valley at Lake Whitney Texas or at Reynolds Creek Lake Waco, Texas. During those times I have met a lot of people and their different type of horses. On one Oct. weekend we had some friends of Bill’s that was coming that I had never met. I asked Bill as we all were getting our horses ready for our ride that day, what type horses did these friends have? He said Rocky Mountain horses…I said hummmm, never heard of that breed. The thoughts in my head about this breed had me so curious. Now tomorrow we are into his story fully….hang in there! Thank you for your support we appreciate it!

Hi!
Leaving Peaches a good morning vote!

I lunged both horses yesterday. Spangle did well. He is starting to build up muscle:)
Rose did well. She is starting to get the hang of lunging(She didn't really know how to lunge) It takes a while when we start to get her to walk, but she eventually does.:) Also her left hind quarter is building up muscle! Yay! It was a good session.
