How We Met

Cimarron was a gift horse. He was an accidental baby, and he spent the first seven years of his life wild and untrained. My aunt obtained possession of him, and she spent a lot of time working with Cimarron. He acted feral - he bucked and tried to cow-kick his riders. Rather than enter a horse trailer, he repeatedly reared up and flipped over backward, beating himself up in the process. Cimarron eventually quieted down and served as a packhorse for many years. I met him in November 2007, and in July 2008, Cimarron injured himself in the pasture. He subsequently retired from packing and has been my treasured friend ever since..

Very productive afternoon. With Austin's help. I gave Sadie her spring shots and dewormed her. I still need to get her West Nile shot. Austin cleaned out Scruffy's ac filter. I watered my trees and rinsed out Sadie's water trough. Yay! No scrubbing. Rinses clean. <3 Leaving love always and a vote.

Miracle's update:
Healing Hearts Animal Rescue and Refuge.
"Friends, it is with heavy heart that we bring you the news of Love's passing. Once we got her safe to our refuge, she started to seize. She had been carefully and thoughtfully examined by 2 vets, as well as monitored 24 hours a day by our staff. We agreed that she needed to be set free, as not to harm herself and to be allowed to pass with dignity. She was surrounded by people who cared, loved and honored her life. She went over the bridge under the warm sun, in the arms of those who saved her from abuse. She was not alone." Love and a vote.

Glad Big C is feeling better. I think that is instinctive for another horse to try to get one up that's down and hurting. Nugget had a mild bout of colic a couple of weeks ago, there's always something to worry about.

✞ my goodness, what a drive into work this morning…I got up at 4:30 am and by the time I left at 6 am we received 2” of rain already. It is to rain all day soooo guess you know what that means. Weather folks say to look at the bright side-we are no longer in a drought! Yesterday it was partly cloudy and some sun and the wind was blowing pretty good so I thought it was going to dry us some~NOT~ the herd enjoyed turn out and I had to fly spray them a little and they were happy. Happy trails and Have a wonderful day ♡

hope all is well your way ☆ oh boy the hay will be cheap this year~grass and fields of coastal are soooo beautiful with all the rain. Wheat crops are looking horrible for the harvest coming up though-that is sad. Slight rain today but the next 6-8 days we are expecting more. I am hoping I can get the herd out and brush some and clean hoofs out tomorrow before any more rain comes. I may just do hoofs cuz they are going to roll and just get muddy again ☆

HI, left a vote. I left silent votes yesterday. So to date, there are now 9 cases of the EHV-1. Five are fevers only, 4 are neurological. Abby the horse at my barn that came down with it last Friday, is back. She is by herself right now, but she is doing much better. I hope she will have a full recovery. Will not know that for at least another two months. The first horse that came down with it, is still at OSU and not doing well. No other horses at my barn have gotten sick. Zip is doing good, had another ride today, and he did great. Amber is still out with the herd, and that is probably a good thing. The OHSET state meet that was suppose to be next week has been canceled. A lot of local shows, and arenas have closed until the end of the month.

Love, a vote and an update on the Mare. From Tandra Hefley:
Update #2
Fox 10 News was just here. Jill Monier interviewed me and Miracle. I couldn't go into detail earlier about what was going on with her, but I want to let everyone know all their efforts to save her paid off! The Livestock Inspector Supervisor was the one that came to get her. She IS NOT being returned to the hell she was forced to endure. She is going to the state vets office to be evaluated and treated. There is a criminal investigation that has been started. So Miracle is safe! I appreciate everyone that came to see her and offered words of encouragement! I wanted to let everyone know earlier that what was being said was garbage! But I was asked not to until she was picked up so that no one could try to interfere. The people or person that tried to claim she was stolen and not left in the road will pay for what they did to her. All I have to say to the people that tried to defend them is check your facts next time! I know everyone that had something to say thought they were doing the right thing. But when an animals life is at stake it doesn't matter who you like or who you don't. All that matters is that animals life!

Yep, eyes are very expressive. What I hate most to see (it happened Friday and again Sat AM) is when he gets the "dead look" (Steve's name) when he just tunes everything out. All I can think about then is what he must have gone thru, and it's hard to push him past that.

Cisco behaved about like I thought he would (actually, better) - he has NO problem letting me know he's not happy. He got "stuck" again Sat morning - didn't want to move out, Steve came over and said "Hey, what's the matter buddy" and I swear Cisco glared at him, then turned his head away - like "Don't you buddy me". He can be so expressive. Short ride today, then worked Meg and Nugget.

HI, left a vote. Zip had his first solo ride today! He did great! He is just so relaxed and goes with the flow. I am so proud of him!!! This was his third ride overall, but his first solo ride.

Got bad news today. A horse that was at the OHSET meet a couple of weeks ago has come down with the EHV-1, and is at OSU for treatment. Friday a horse at our barn was showing signs of that virus, so she is also at OSU for treatment, and she is in stable condition today. She however, was NOT at the meet. Little scary. Should find out tomorrow if she does indeed have that virus or if it is something else.

This happened last week, just a few miles north of my house. So sorry this is long, but I had to share this with all of you, Evil. Don't know how anyone could do such a horrible thing. I left a vote, too.....Tandra Hefley posted this on her Facebook page.
Ok everyone so here's what happened about 2 am regarding the horse. I am extremely tired, so if I don't explain any of it well, please just ask and I will try to explain a different way.

I was headed home on 331st ave going north. Just as I was almost to Sunland Ave I saw what looked like a roll of carpet or maybe a large cardboard box. I swerved around it and decided I should remove it from the road so someone else wouldn't hit it. I turned around, pulled up about 10 feet from it with my headlights aimed at it, and went to get it. When I was a few feet away, the horse raised its head and nickered to me. I almost threw up! This poor animal was hog tied like a kidnap victim would be! Her front legs were tied, the nylon strap went to her back legs, then over her back to her throat. If she tried to move the strap would choke her. I didn't have a knife, so I tried to pull enough slack to get it off one hoof. She would panic when it tightened on her throat and I would have to stop. There was a car headed in our direction so I frantically pull on it and she trusted me enough to get one leg free. Then I quickly undid the rest and tried to get her to stand. She has deep cuts in her legs and throat from fighting, but I did get her up. That's when I saw the hair and blood on the pavement. Somebody had hit her as she lay helpless on the road. I slowly walked her to the side of the road and started calling people for help. Shawn Funkhouser got my trailer and came to help me. It took her two tries, but she loaded like a champ! We got her to my house and called MCSO. They came and made a report as well as called the Felony Animal Crimes Division to make sure whoever did this pays for it! This morning about 7 Natasja Pieters Robbins came and made a report for the Dept of Agriculture Livestock. She is already working to find the person who did this.

As injured as this poor mare is, she never tried to bite or kick me. She did everything I asked of her, even though she is in more pain than I even want to imagine. She has been starved for at least the last year. She is about 600 lbs under weight. She was tied and left to die on a dark road. She was hit by a car and her skin ripped off on the pavement. But she will walk right up and give horse kisses. She will nickered at me as soon as she sees me. And she allows me to clean and doctor her dozens of wounds without protest. No animal should have to endure what this sweet, kind, beautiful, and loving mare has had to endure!

Thank you to Angie Shelley Bassett, Frank Joseph Cooper Jr., T.j. Furness, and Pat Page for your help as well!

Hi Cimarron, here's a vote for ya. Well it was another busy day. Did a few things here to get Paige's stall ready for her. I feel like I want to sleep in there, 5 bags of pelleted bedding, fluffed up to about 6/7 inches deep and smells great! OMG, do I love driving Beast with the trailer. Smaller gooseneck handled awesome. Put the shift lever in Hauling Mode and going down out big mountain, never had to touch the breaks, it did it all! Had a great lesson, we went over my lesson plan for next week. Since Dr. Larry is coming tomorrow for shots and coggins, Paige usually gets a really sore stiff neck for like 3 days. So well be taking it easy then. Then I have a great plan to work on. Didn't get home till like 5 pm. Indy was nickering to her, Bullseye could care less (little stinker). Nice to have her home.
