How We Met

I got apache from a flea market. He was skinny covered in tick and to young to be took away from his mom. I didn't have anyway way to get him home so I put him in the backseat of my jeep. Couples month later he got sick. We had somebody come out and look at him and they told us to put him on calf manna and within a couple of weeks he was as fat as can be ..

We've had a lot of rain and flooding here in Arizona. We're okay here, but some towns, north of Phoenix, weren't so lucky. New River, Arizona, was hit so hard, pets and horses were washed away. I saw, on the news, that 2 of the horses drowned and women on horseback were searching for the other 2. I haven't heard if they were found, yet. So heartbreaking. Sadie's fine. We've had rain, hard Thursday morning, but no flooding at my house. Sadie's out of her corral, because it's slippery and mucky. To know Sadie, is to know she's happy. She was at the backdoor begging for carrots. Of course, she got some. Hope you're all doing well. Leaving love and a vote.

Apaache and Blaze,
Lilly got a trim yesterday, you can hardly see where she took out that big junk very thankful she never had any effects from missing it, been cleaning out the house, getting rid of surplus stuff that just makes the house feel cluttered and heavy, great feeling, might even go by new bath towels, ours are like 20 + years old. have a great Thursday, love Suz and Lilly

Apaache and Blaze,
Had a blast last night with Lilly took her through the arena circus last night, by hand, then played with her for awhile then, rode her around in the arena withnothiing on her, no halter or bridle or bareback pad, or saddle it was awesome, she listened to where I wanted to go for the most part , she even went over the tarp and stepped over the styrofoam aluminum reflectors, cantered around a bit and had her back up, it was really cool, of course I did wear my helmet, that is a must !! love Suz and Lilly

This program
produced the stallion Gooseberry, Crow Creek (Lory's top calf horse), and
many good mares. Hyde and Dede then bought the other half interest in Blue
Valentine from Del. Hyde felt like it was a great privilege to rope steers
on Blue. In 1970 Hyde roped at his last Cheyenne Frontier Days on Blue. ~Thanks for voting~ **Copper**

The tradition continues when... my mother, Dede (Buster's daughter) married my father , Hyde. Hyde started breeding Ambrose mares to Hayes' Plenty Coup, then took that cross and bred to Blue Valentine. ~Thanks for voting~ **Copper**

I lunged Spangle under tack yesterday. He was being a little grumpy, but was good. I then got on and walked and trotted him. He was really good:)

I rode Rose bareback last night at dusk. It was just a fun ride. We loped in each direction too:) It was fun.

I rode buttercup this evening. she only bucked once. I was teaching a lesson and worked on passing the gate without shouldering over to it. the one rider let her do that and she couldn't get her away from the gate afterward. she really was good tonight other than that one buck

Spangle's Story Continued:
Eventually, after working Spangle in the round pen for a couple months, I got on and rode him at a walk. The next time I rode we trotted. We have been working on walking and trotting under saddle for a while. Two months ago we tried loping. He bucked. I made him gallop once I was safely on the ground. Got back on and walked and trotted him. I also lunged him at a lope.

Around 1951 they purchased Texas Blue Bonnet, a son of Joe Hancock. They started crossing him on their own mares and in 1955 a patron mare bred to him produced a foal named Plenty Coup, who went on to also produce many top colts. At about the same time my grandfather King Merritt, brought one of the first Quarter horse stallions, "Ole Red P-9" to Wyoming. ~Thanks for voting~ **Copper**

Charlie 8 months after being rescued

How could anyone throw away much less abuse such a sweet kind intelligent horse? Charlie says "unfortunately my new mom (Lahle) lost her own horse, just after I arrived at Far West Farms. She was absolutely devastated. Far west's kind barn manager knew how sad she was and let her take me on as a project since she really did not want anything to do with horses anymore and I did not want anything to do with people. We were a perfect match and bonded quickly, and before long, Far West made it possible for us to be together forever."

He was so starved he could only have hay and in carefully measured amounts and Charlie was not allowed to have any treats. When a horse is that starved uncontrolled refeeding can lead to terrible medical problems such as colic, laminitis kidney failure, and even death. As tempting as it is to just start throwing food at a starving horse, I would learn it is an art and should involve a vet or someone who has experience with refeeding.

A facebook donor sent a donation for Charlie's bail. [God bless you Amber Reed and anyone else who also helped raise Charlie's bail.] Rescue day 2-September 2,2012: A kind woman, a local trained, took Charlie. I think she may have even contributed yo, or paid the rest of his bail. But she was the one who took responsibiity for him and saw that he got immediate veterinary treatment. The trainer had a friend another trainer who was looking for a school horse and she saw how sweet Charlie was and had high hopes that with proper care he could be a strong, healthy, horse again.

On September 1,2012 Charlie was sent to an auction in Ontario, CA. Volunteers from auction Horses rescue were there, as they always are, when new horses come in. They saw Charlie among the sick, aging, injured and young untrained horses in the lot awaiting their fate and posted pictures on their Facebook page. And that's where Charlie's rescue story begins.....

If you ever see horses or ponies at a summer rental barn, fair, zoo, or cardinal etc. that are thin sick or injured - report it them. Don't accept excuses like "he's just old." The reality is , some business buy up old, sick horses because they are gentle use them up over the summer then send them back to auction, they pay little for them and get money back. When they are resold and just make as much money off them as possible over the summer. These horses are underfed, receive little or no medical care or ever see a farrier. No horse deserves that kind of treatment and exploitation.
