How We Met

Well to start, Briar and I grew up together! My very first horse was her mommy, but I was a little kid. When Briar was old enough, my Grandma rode her and I rode Glory (her mom). Briar had two babies, Sebastian and Sterling, and my Grandpa and Grandma each got one of the boys. So Briar was all mine, but since we grew up together, we were already so close. Having her all to myself just made that bond stronger! Now I have her and my older gelding, and they own my heart, but she takes up most of the space since her and I have been together the longest..

☆ It has been pretty hot the last few days. Gave the herd some carrots when I got home from work then let them graze our yard for a while. I shaved my JRT (Rain is her name)so she will be comfortable during the summer. She is a rough coat (long haired Jack Russell). She looks so different! Whinnies, love & hugs ☆

Hooves crossed for Whiskey to be ~ May HOTM ♡
<)___~ Whiskey will return to the Doc on May 20th for his next set of x-ray’s. I feel he will be just fine, last dose of bute yesterday and I think in 2 days will tell a lot of how he is but I can’t know for sure until the next visit. I want to thank you all for all the amazing support throughout the month of April. I hope you enjoyed his story and I surely hope I can tell you many more story’s in the future of he & I riding together…God bless you all…..I honestly did not realize how difficult and demanding running for HOTM could be until now! Not having a computer at home really made this challenging for me, so again I cannot say thanks enough, sending love to you & your herds!!!!!!!
Here is our finial tidbit on the Fabulous Rocky Mountain Horse Breed! In the early 1960s, Sam Tuttle managed the trail riding concession at the Natural Bridge State Park in Powell County, Kentucky. He had as many as fifty horses there, including TOBE. This stallion was often seen tied to the hitching post alongside all the mares. He became quite well known in the ten or so years he was ridden there. Besides breeding, TOBE was used as a trail horse. He carried Sam, and sometimes the trail guides who worked for Sam, with sure-footed ease over mountainous terrain for many years. Although Sam would allow other people to ride TOBE occasionally, it was always a ride closely supervised. He loved to show off his beloved stallion, but also kept a close eye on him. Everyone who rode TOBE enjoyed his gentle temperament and comfortable gait. It amazed people to think the well-mannered horse they were riding was indeed a breeding stallion.
TOBE was used for breeding until July of his thirty-fourth year, and he passed on his gait, disposition, and other great qualities to his offspring. It has been said that TOBE's progeny followed in his "perfectly-timed" footsteps. TOBE sired many fine horses before his death at the ripe old age of thirty-seven. One outstanding trait passed on was longevity, as many of his offspring were still breeding into their late twenties and early thirties.
Thank you for your support we appreciate it! Hoping to see him as the top horse tomorrow!!!!!

weekend phone votes ♡
When I got home from work Friday (4/11/14-2 weeks ago) I noticed Whiskey was walking slow and didn't seem right. He has NEVER been sore after a trim but I thought this could be a first time...Brent (my farrier) had been out that morning and put shoes on Deacon and trimmed the other 2. As I watched I knew something was wrong and put a call into Doc Edwards (he specializes in horses only). I then gave Whiskey bute because he then kept laying down and I could tell he was in pain. I watched him drink water, I saw him pea & poop, I listened for guts sounds in his tummy so I knew he wasn't colicing. Doc finally called he wanted Whiskey in early Saturday morning 4/12/14. He assured me that giving the bute was fine and it was the right thing to do. He also knew how upset I was and again assured me that I had caught this in time but couldn't tell me anything until he saw him the next morning. Yes, founder is what it is…..Phone votes over the weekend, his story will continue Monday 4/28…..
The Rocky Mountain Horse Association's (RMHA) rendition of the history of the breed states there was a gaited colt brought from the Rocky Mountain region of the United States to the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains in eastern Kentucky around 1890. He was referred to as "the Rocky Mountain Horse" by the local Kentucky people because of the area of the country from which he had come. He is the horse credited for the start of the Rocky Mountain Horse breed. Little is known about this foundation stallion, but oral history indicated he was chocolate-colored with flaxen mane and tail, and he possessed a superior gait. The stallion was bred to the local Appalachian saddle mares in a relatively small geographical area and the basic characteristics of a strong genetic line continued. This prized line of horses increased in numbers as years went by, and these are the horses known today as Rocky Mountain Horses.

Celebrating Easter with love, hugs & votes 4 all!
✞ Picking up from yesterday about him tossing his head about bugs. Sometimes I can make a pony tail in his fore lock and that helps a lot. I think he sees his hair sometimes and over reacts, big ol’ treat hound! As soon as we get under the trees on those trails he just stops tossing his head and settles right back into his awesome self. I will add Rocky Mountain facts to my blogs for the rest of our HOTM run. I hope you enjoy them =)
The history of the Rocky Mountain Horse from 1890 to the latter part of the 1900s carries little or no documentation and few facts that can be proven beyond the shadow of doubt. Everyone who personally witnessed the breed's beginnings (back to the 1800s) is deceased, and we have been left with only verbal history passed down from generation to generation. Thus, all that can be recorded at this point in time are the stories recollected by living descendants. Thank you for your support we appreciate it!

The more we rode the better Whiskey got at reining. The more miles and trails the easier it got on me and him. I discovered Whiskey loves the water. The picture today was taken 8/2012. We can get in a few minutes but I have to move him out or he will try to lie down, but I can take him right back in and then he settles to stand, doesn’t swim yet with me. We are still working toward that. We haven’t camped out in nearly 2 years, and that is when I can try to swim with the horses. It’s too hard to try swimming when I day ride because of the drive home (driving wet is no fun) -ha ha =) Deacon is my true water baby-he will actually swim with me and never try to lie down. I have also found that Whiskey hates for any type bug to fly in his face-so needless to say while we ride in the open if there are grass hoppers or butter flies, regular fly’s he tosses his head slightly. It doesn’t bother me now but it used to. Thank you for your support we appreciate it!

We left off Friday about the phone call to buy Whiskey! The arrangement was made for us to meet that weekend and Whiskey would be mine. The next few days were like a life time to me. I had put in a vacation day for that Friday because I knew I couldn’t concentrate and I wanted to get everything ready for the trail ride …I mainly wanted to get everything ready for his new home with us. Cliff was putting in our stalls at the time. I came home the day Karla called and talked with Cliff of course. Like I said he wasn’t working but he was working at our place (love cheap labor) lol. That next day after work I came home and he had added the 3rd stall, I started to cry of course because I knew he understood how badly I wanted Whiskey. Thank you for your support we appreciate it!

Have a GREAT weekend !
Today’s picture is the picture Karla was going to post on craigslist & the first picture I ever had of Whiskey of my own until he became mine. When I speak of Whiskey my heart totally melts. I can get side tracked easily talking about him…so needless to say, we rode many times and camped a many a night. SO nearly 6 or 7 months later I received a call at work and it was Karla. My heart sunk, I knew she was going to say Whiskey was for sale. At that time Cliff was out of work (construction-you probably know how that goes) I was scared to ask how much they were asking. She told me what they were going to post him for on craigslist and I knew I could not afford that price. I told Karla I could not pay that price but to wait and not post until I could try a few options. She said right then that “sense you are a friend and we know how much you want and love him here is what we will sale him to you for”!!! It was like-woohoooooo! It was a price I could actually afford (not really but hey). I will get as many phone votes in over the weekend as I possibly can, mainly Sunday but will try to get some on Saturday; I will catch you up on Monday! Riding at Lake Whitney Saturday& will meet Cheryl and Cisco!!

As we ate lunch and rested, Whiskey walked over to me several times. He would nuzzle my hand (at the time I didn’t know he was a treat hound) and I felt as if we bonded and we were linked in some way. I told Karla right then and there that if they ever sold Whiskey to please contact me first. He has marbling on his lower legs that are silver, chocolate and nearly liver color (see his profile picture for today). It amazes me to still look at how he is marked; he is just absolutely beautiful-but I’m parcel!!! He is our escape artist, the one that can get into or out of ANYTHING; such a smarty pants and a treat hound lol. Thank you for your support we appreciate it!

Whiskey says Thank You for your support!
Monday we left off about Whiskey’s color and me with 5 hundred questions for Karla! Here we go…That poor girl had never met me before and I could not shut up :) I then walked over and looked Whiskey right in the eye and he looked back into mine and my heart sunk. His beauty was striking and the color was outstanding. He had a smart, sharpness about him-I’m sure he was thinking “what in the world is she doing”. The ride finally got underway; usually everyone has me ride out front and calls me the trail boss! Deacon is a faster walking horse but can ride in the middle or behind after the first hour or so. Well, here comes Rio & Whiskey with their smooth selves!!! They just gaited their smooth self’s right past me & Deacy. I watched Whiskey and noticed he didn’t quite move the same as Rio but still a difference from a QH. 2 hours into the ride we decided to rest a few minutes in a place we call “Carol’s lounge”. We have names for all our spots we ride to rest or to take a break out there because it’s so big. Thank you for your support we appreciate it!

Now were into “Whiskey’s” story really good! I finished getting Deacon ready for our all day ride. We always pack drinks and hotlinks or some sort of sausage/lunch meat for lunch. Bill got a call that they were pulling in and asked us to wait a few minutes before heading out. I guess we had about 8 riders starting out then Karla & Tim made 10-oh what fun! They pulled in and parked and they started to unload the horses and of course I was already curious. Out came this Smokey chocolate colored horse, smaller built and my jaw dropped open in awe….Her horse Rio changes colors as all Rocky’s do throughout the year so he had almost a buckskin color but he is what they call a chocolate color. Then out comes Tim & Whiskey~~~~OMG I thought I would faint…..I was speechless….I had never seen a horse look like that nor that color…I went over to Karla and started all the questions and she explained that Whiskey’s color is called “Red Chocolate”. To be continued Wednesday, phone votes tomorrow =) Thank you for your support we appreciate it!

Whiskey would love your support for his HOTM run
In 2008 the decision was made after a talk with our boy’s and Cliff. It was time for me to get back on my horse journey. I purchased Deacon in March 23, 2008 and then bought Whiskey in May 2010. When I run Deacon I will tell more about the 1st 2 years back on my journey. Now that you have some back ground on me and my journey I will start Whiskey’s story with me. As many of you know I trail ride and use to camp with the horses all the time, now we just day ride. Hoping this spring sometime to camp again-fingers crossed =) It has been 2 years sense we have camped out with them. We would camp at Mccown or Plowman Valley at Lake Whitney Texas or at Reynolds Creek Lake Waco, Texas. During those times I have met a lot of people and their different type of horses. On one Oct. weekend we had some friends of Bill’s that was coming that I had never met. I asked Bill as we all were getting our horses ready for our ride that day, what type horses did these friends have? He said Rocky Mountain horses…I said hummmm, never heard of that breed. The thoughts in my head about this breed had me so curious. Now tomorrow we are into his story fully….hang in there! Thank you for your support we appreciate it!

Our story continues. After looking at several horses I had found a beautiful Palomino mare (I knew you would be surprised Marion & the Blondie’s) her name was Tawny. She had a white blaze & 4 white socks. During that time frame I had attended several Ray Hunt seminars. Man he was awesome (RIP Ray). After having her for some time I wanted to breed her to this beautiful stallion (deep dark chestnut QH). The Handler of the stallion asked me to release my mare and leave the paddock area, I thought ok…they were pretty far from me, but it seemed strange that I should let her go-at the time I had trust in these people….??? I prefer not to go into all the details (I didn’t and still don’t know much on the breeding side of horses-learned good lesson about people and stallions that day)-after releasing Tawny I turned to walk away but the handler must have lost control because the stallion kicked me in the back and burst my left kidney and tore my spleen. Yes, I almost died. They rushed me in for emergency surgery. I spent 2 weeks in the hospital; I now only have one kidney. I actually lost 7 units of blood internally, like I said I’m lucky to be alive. I trusted that person with the safety of myself and my horse but I guess my judgment needed a little adjusting! I will continue the story on Saturday, remember-phone votes tomorrow! Thank you for your support we appreciate it!

I will explain how I came about choosing my Whiskey and Deacon so it takes us Wwway back~~~~~ lol ~ I got out of the Navy in 1986. I knew I wanted to get a horse at the time and I wanted to try barrel racing. I had a friend in California (last place I was stationed) that was running the circuit barrel racing and a boyfriend riding bulls so I guess that is what made me want to try barrels. I really just wanted a horse to care for and ride because I loved them so much. I moved back to Texas and started my search. I met a lady where I started working that raised quarter horses and she had a beautiful dark bay mare that I started riding, her name was Fanny. She was very gentle and easy to handle. My sister said I could put a fence up on her property and use their garage to convert into a stall and storage area. So I went to work with a few friends and converted this place and added one stall and a tack area. It took a few months to get everything ready so the lady let me make payments. Once she was paid off, and the property was ready I brought her home with me. Things just didn’t work out for Fanny & me. I’m sure you all can relate to the fact that some horses and humans are not a match. That is how it was with her, just didn’t feel right. The hunt was on and a new year began 1987 ~ Thank you for your support we appreciate it!

Generally healthy horses, they often live long lives but do have a tendency to be extremely "easy keepers". Care must be taken to keep your Rockies from becoming too overweight, particularly in their later years.* Thank you for your support we appreciate it!

I just realized that was a 100 lb gain in one week for Fatima. I know that is what the weight tape read, but I wonder if it is real. Does it even sound real? Any way that is what it read.

Ok, it is raining here again and here is your rainy Sunday vote. LOL.

I spent a little time outside as our herd ate dinner. I stayed out to keep Fancy from taking Fatima's grain. It is cool outside but it was nice when the rains halted for a while.

Good Morning, well, after cordoning off the snow bank, their small paddock is about 1/3 smaller, Charlie can buck and do front legs stands on the spot, he doesn't have enough room to run and build up steam, but he can stand in one spot and blow of steam, he is so funny....I wish I could get them out onto the larger area, but I'm also glad for the gradual thaw. Don't want a flood. Plus drastic changes in weather are so hard on these guys. Trevor ate two small meals yesterday, this is very good. Have a great day, Love Donna Lee

What a SURPRISE for Cowboy and Trigger!
They sure are happy to be your Princes this day.
Cowboy asked me to thank you and leave a vote.
You got it ")

I did get the weight tape out to measure Fatima. I can't believe I forgot I even had the weight tape. She was only 860 lbs. I am going to weigh Trigger. I think he weighs more than that now. Or close to it.

The man that gave us Fatima told me she will not stand tied. Friday and Saturday we worked with Fatima. I am just concentrating on getting her to relax and stand near the tree right now.
Fancy watches when I work with Fatima. I noticed when I turn Fatima loose, Fancy will chase her. And when I leave and come back Fancy will chase Fatima away from me. They remind me of the scene in the movie 'Spirit' when Rain gets onto Spirit for misbehaving with Little Creek. (i think that is his name.)

The rains are once again upon us. I know you are supposed to eat your desert after your main meal. But I never do that when I eat, so today I gave all the horses treats before they ate their grain.
Since it is raining, Trigger was in the stall for a while and Fancy and Fatima stood out eating hay together.

Have a blessed and peaceful night
Love Fancy and herd ♥

Good Morning my friends, unfortunately it is still winter in Ontario. Minus 16 this morning going up to a high of minus 12 degrees Celsius, that is just plain cold. Yesterday it was way too windy to let them out even in the small paddock, which is the only one they can use right now because everything still has huge amounts of snow....but I just went out for morning buckets and there is no wind, so looks like they can at least get some fresh air and sunshine today. It is a bit icy, so Charlie better behave himself. A few years ago a friend of mine had her horse go down on some ice, it was in a place where she couldn't see her from the house or barn, she didn't know until she called them in that afternoon. They don't know how long she was down, but she couldn't get herself back up and she was terribly stressed, it took 3 of them with sand and kitty litter and blankets to get her on her feet, she coliced so I figure she was down for a while, luckily, she recovered. I worry about my Sterly because she is old, but I can see them no matter where they are from the house. Pray for spring, we left a vote, Love Donna Lee

We left a rainy, cold it's going to return to snow vote, even the weather girl on TV last night said she just wished she could give a good forecast for a change...Looks like a "stay inside and get groomed day" their little paddock was starting to melt, I'm just glad we had good run off, so far no flooding in the barn. The next few days are below freezing again, so we have some ice, not good. I'm so jealous of all of you that can ride. Trevor is in the S L O W recovery stage. Where do I begin.......
Good Morning, this has been the worst week so far, Trevor looks terrible, feels worse and there is absolutely nothing we can do to change that. This was suppose to have been the last week and Monday March 10 was to be the last radiation and chemo treatment. However, last week,Monday during patient review after blood work was taken it was discovered that his white blood cell count was VERY low???sometimes a result of large doses of Chemo? they said he could not have more chemo until that was better. So all the chemo treatments (4 more) have been moved back a week. Trevor had just about resigned himself to the feeding tube when his home care nurse told him there was another drug they could give him to help him with the pain of swallowing, even water hurts and solid food is out of the question, when he asked the Dr. told him to double up on the morphine and if that was not enough they would try the new drug, so with some glimmer of hope he held off on the feeding tube, can't say I blame him for that one. He is forcing down two or three Boost's a day, but that just is not enough. The morphine did not work, so he got the new drug, it is a patch and the first couple of days seemed better, but now, not so much...On the bright side Monday is his last radiation treatment and then he gets to "Bang the Gong" In the radiation waiting room there is a large Chinese Gong, and when you have had your last treatment you come out and you Bang the Gong, all the patients in the waiting area clap and cheer, cancer is like a club.....So, with Gods grace Trevor's blood will be good and he can have his last four chemo treatments and he can work on regaining strength and some normalcy to his life, thank you for the prayers, it means so much to have people that care and are on your side. Love you all, we left votes, Donna Lee

Hi Brenda, please drop by, miss you
I can hardly believe that it is Saturday morning already. Of course around here one day is just drifting into another. Work has been busy, the weather has been very cold with a storm or two thrown in. Trevor is on his last leg of treatment and I can tell you he has struggled to stay standing, this man is not a quitter, that is for sure. The pain is crazy, eating is impossible but he has resisted the feeding tube, I'm sure it is going in on Monday. Hearing loss, hair loss, weight loss, burned skin, ulcers thro out his mouth and throat, oh, and did I mention the pain....5 more radiation session, and they have switched up the chemo. It was going to be one more big whack, it is now 4 smaller ones, 4 days in a row with the radiation next week. Then a 6 week rest and a re-evaluation, I think the uncertainty of this whole thing is also getting him down. So, one day at a time, all we can do is be here and pray, thanks for all of yours, I love you for it. Donna Lee

Hi, stopped in with votes. Meg injured her hind leg Sun, and was put on bute and stall rest. So much for that, she was so upset she wouldn't eat. Turned her out in a small pen this AM near the other horses and she started eating.

Come visit me, Mystic, Cisco, Angel Meg, Bo (RIP) and Jazz & Angel Nugget.

Good morning my friends, sending chilly, snowy greetings. I want you all to know just how much we appreciate the love and support. Trevor has completed 3 weeks of treatments. He still has his amazing attitude, but there is no question it is taking a toll on him and of course the rest of us. David looks terrible, I always thought my husband was a very handsome man, but right now he looks exhausted and worried. Trev's hearing is going, especially high pitch, he has pain, his mouth and throat are very sore, eating is difficult and he says food doesn't really taste anyway. It is almost a full time job to keep track of his appointments and his med schedules. He lost some hair and of course he is very tired. His next big whack of chemo is Monday so he has the weekend to phych up for feeling really crappy...As for me, Charlie, Sterly and all the other four footed critters, we are hanging in. We left votes, we miss you, Love to all Donna Lee & family PS thanks for checking in, I wish I could get on everyday, but I just can't right now, love Donna Lee

I mounted the hay feeder onto the side of the corral. They're building more chicken houses at the egg ranch. Sadie heard the noises they were making and ran over next to me to listen. How sweet that she trusts me. Back's sore from picking up hay. Did it wrong. Have a beautiful weekend. Love and a vote.

Come visit me, SADIE *Thx For HOTD - 11/30/17!*.

We are so dry here so the static electricity is horrible. I didn’t even pet my horses yesterday because everything I touch shocks me and I do not want the horses to associate my touching to those little pops of electricity!!! I am also fixing to start withdrawal symptoms from not riding…gotta get on my horses and ride at the lake before I go nuts ♡ Rain should be creeping in Saturday afternoon or evening so I only have one shot at riding cuz Sunday rain will be here as well…Whinny’s & neighs as we prance on your horseshoe =)

Come visit me, ♥ Deacon ♥.

Thank you all!!!! I will never know everything Cisco has been through, and I don't want to know. All I know for sure is his tongue had nearly been severed in half, probably either from a really harsh bit or having his head tied around, and his R eye socket fractured (again, don't wanna know). Steve said he's pretty sure at some point someone attempted to train Cisco to buck, to this day he WILL NOT tolerate a flank cinch. I believe that Cisco was loved and treated well early on, then things just went south for him. I'm also sure he's been through mutiple sales, with his striking looks and proud manner always finding a buyer that's sure he would be the one to "fix" him. I remember Steve telling me at one point that Cisco wasn't only PTSD, but MPD (multiple personality disorder) and probably Bi-polar to boot. One thing everyone has remarked on wherever we go, is how Cisco watches for me. Whenever I am in sight, his eyes follow me. It's an awesome feeling to have that kind of connetion with a horse. Eventually, I think Cisco would have been on one of those one-way trips to Canada or Mexico, instead we plan on continuing our adventures...

REALLY APPRECIATE ALL THE SUPPORT, THANKS! Steve and Amanda returned to Texas last summer, and Cali, Mystic and Cinco went home to their new training facility. I have been out for a few lessons, and a clinic they did in November. Cisco did well, and was voted by the clinic participants the easiest horse to do groundwork with (he had us switch and do some groundwork with each other's horses). Joe, my farrier stopped in to watch for a while, and when he was out next he told me that while he knew I had been riding and doing clinics with Cisco, he couldn't believe how calm he was. He remembered watching Steve work with him in the "early days"
