How We Met

A college girl was boarding him at the barn I ride at and she needed to sell him. She is an endurance rider so she needed a younger horse to be competitive. So for Christmas my parents bought him for me.

don't forget to vote for Deacon on his page!
fingers crossed and prayers sent your way ☆ As I have mentioned before, I have learned so much with Deacon and of course Whiskey & Rocket. Each horse has brought knowledge to me that has its own value. I think we all carry a special place for that 1st horse that is hard to describe ♥ the 1st year ½ I went trail riding, I experienced penning & cutting cows but my favorite has always been trail riding. Have a great Thursday ~Whinny’s & hugs ☆

Vet Visit!
So the vet came yesterday to give Cowboy steroid injections. We are keeping our fingers crossed that they work. If they do he will get hyaluronic acid injections with the steroid injection he got yesterday in about 2 months. Hopefully it didn't get any bacteria in it. The vet was very careful and shaved his hair and used a lot of stuff to make sure its clean. Soon we should know if he will ever be rideable. Fingers Crossed.

Come visit me, Cowboy.

♡ When I got Deacon he had previously pastured on Bill’s brothers property with 3 other horses. All 3 others horses were taken in to have sarcoid tumors removed. Deacon had a small knot on his left flank that I had Doc Edward’s check out. He said to leave it alone until it started to change or he could remove for cosmetic reasons if I wanted. I choose to wait. I don’t show my horses and I wasn’t interested giving Deacon Surgery after just newly purchasing him. It didn’t bother him either. Several years ago I did have it removed. It started to change. Doc had learned how to also prevent future ones as well. This method is to take a small piece of the tumor and put it in the neck area. You can’t even tell where the cut on his flank was now. In his knot he actually had 2 small tumors in it.
Equine Sarcoid:

Sarcoid tumors are the most common skin tumor in horses. These tumors are unique in that they are the product of infection with Bovine Papilloma Virus (BPV), which is probably transmitted by flies. Many horses can be infected with this virus, but no two horses will express it in the same way. Tumor appearance and size can vary greatly between horses, and even on the same horse; similarly, response to different treatments can be highly variable. Tumors can originate at the site of a wound or tack rub, and originally present as a wound that isn't healing; on the lower limbs, they also are often mistaken for proud flesh. Though sarcoids are the most common skin tumor of horses, they are also one of the most misunderstood maladies of horses.

☆ Deacon’s registered name is “One More Special”, he surely is one special horse to me. Deacon was born with what people call a “prophet’s thumb”. It is an indention on the right side of his neck. I’m told it is from him lying on his hoof while in his mother’s womb. We thank you for your support during this HOTM run =) Have a wonderful day! Hey guys I have a bit of news this is really important so please read to the end. Last Monday Cowboy was diagnosed with navicular syndrome for those of you who do not know what navicular syndrome is it is basically the degeneration of bone and tissue in the horses heel. This has not been easy for me to hear but we had suspected it. It is in his right front hoof and is very little now but will only get worse. There is no cure for navicular syndrome but there are some things to help him. He is getting special shoes that will keep the pressure off his heel and injections every 6 months. Don't worry I will be keeping him as long as he is not in major pain. He will be my dressage horse now and we will be searching for another horse for me to lease or buy. So as hard as it is to say this if any of you know of a thoroughbred for sale that has been restarted I would love to know. Cowboy has taught me so much and he will continue to do so just not with jumping involved. And I know I'm doing the right thing keeping him I could never let him go in this time for both of us. Thank you for reading I love you all.

Come visit me, Cowboy.

Deacon would love your support for HOTM!
♡ after my kids got to be 15 and 16 (2008) we had a family talk about them getting new computers or me getting a horse. We agreed that I had gone long enough without having a horse! So a friend of mine that trail rides all the time helped me to find a good gentle gelding. She introduced me to Deacons owner/trainer Bill and I fell in love the moment I saw Deacon.. I know I got a late start but better late than never. On my days off work I will try to phone vote folks but please stop and vote Deacon even if I can’t get to everyone. I am getting his story together. This was a last minute decision I made soooo thank you for your support :)

I have two English AP saddles reg width and three western (one is for sale at tack shop) semi quarter horse bars. One English is a Borelli and the other is a Kincade. Wide width would sit on the high withers of a TB, but narrow could actually pinch the withers, so I go with the regular and use a good pad. I use a baby pad, my fleece pad, or the half pad, making sure it is pulled up into the saddle groove (underneath of the saddle). I have never had a wither rub from any of my saddles.
When it's time to get another saddle, I'll go with a new Pessoa, Ovation, or a nicely used Stubben. Pretty much what you prefer and can afford in a regular width for most anyway. Hope that helps!

Still have family here from FL. Yesterday we helped them in cleaning up property in IL. Still a lot to do there.
I picked up horse vacs from the vet and gave them their shots. Ella flinched causing me to withdraw the needle, so had to stick her twice lol.
Need to get my house cleaned-never did finish fall deep cleaning! Seems like not enough minutes in the day any more. One good thing is that I'm almost done Christmas shopping! Yay! Now about that tree...

Hi Cowboy!
My OTTB's are barefoot but I do have Cavallo hoof boots that fits my mare if she needs them. I use MSM daily (very cheap product) and can tell a difference when I run out because they are stiff when coming out of the stalls, so it takes a bit more warm up time when riding.
Bub spent 5 years on the track with 45 starts, and Ella 2 years with 15 starts. He's a little bit buck kneed due to the tightening of the check ligaments but is 100% sound. She has a bone chip in her knee that fused, but also is 100% sound. I have no problems with them and they don't require a chiropractor although I wouldn't be against using one should I ever feel they need it.
My suggestion would be, whether you buy straight off the track or buy already retrained, get one with fewer total starts (like 10 or less) if there is concern about soundness. Honestly, more leg stress and back issues are found in barrel horses, jumpers and reiners than flat racers. They do have the energy and it's hard to wear them out, but I wouldn't say hotheaded. I've rode more Quarters and an Arabian that I would classify as hotheaded or just plain crazy! The TB breed is stereotyped as being out of control hotheads but it's not true. There are wackos in any breed but it's not correct in saying all TB's are like that. Ella still jumps and plays around like a youngster, she's fun to watch, but is really sweet under saddle. Bub is a thinker, very laid back, will follow you like a puppy dog, and will do everything you ask him to do-IF he feels like it lol! They are good riding horses, easy to train, and they remember everything! I hope this helps. Any more questions, just ask.

Busy days and short nights! Family here from Florida. Got the turkey thawed, and the Madeira wine ready for basting! Yummy! My husband was going to deep fry but he's going hunting while I cook! I will send him to Rural King to get more horse mats ($20.00 after rebate!) They're useful in many ways.

My cousins cocker spaniel came for a visit so my girls were playing with her. Shawna told the dog, Bella, to go get the ponies. Before I said Bub will stomp her, she ran out into the pasture and yes, Bub did a smacking stomp! The dog yelped, I snickered, and Shawna felt bad! Bella is okay, scared her. He always did that with the two pugs we had so I knew he wasn't out to do real harm, just a get out of here kind of thing! We had a pit bull that barked at him and he left a nice horseshoe print around his eye! The dog never barked at him again! Needless to say, we don't have dogs anymore-we got a Bub.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving. God bless you and your family.

Hey Cowboy. Saw your questions on Ella's page.
Yes, I bought them right off the track. I wanted to retrain them myself. Her last race was Oct 19, 2009, and his last race was Oct 25, 2009. I paid to have them delivered and I got them on Oct 30,2009. They were pretty fresh and nervous with the new atmosphere-a dead leaf screeching across the concrete, cornstalks rustling in the wind, etc. Oh and our dog! Dumb thing-he went right up behind one of the horses and barked. Needless to say, the dog had a very nice perfect horseshoe print around his eye!! He never did that again LOL!!
After a "let down" period, I started working them. It's been rewarding, but a lot of work. I think when I get another, I'll get one already retrained from one of the organizations (Friends of Ferdinand, New Vocations, Makers Mark Secretariat Center, etc.) For me, it's a "been there done that" kind of thing. Plus, I just don't really care to go that fast anymore LOL!! Check out those sites and good luck in what you decide. They really are special.

OTTB's are great! I retrained them myself. Never been cross tied, lunged, or had the pleasure of our legs wrapped around their bellies-what fun that was lol! Have one that would be suitable for jumping and one for dressage. "Bub"(My Thirty Six) got too full of himself/confident jumping and tried the tubular gate set at 5ft. We were working up but only at 2ft 6in. at the time, so we haven't done a lot since. But he has a hard time looking at a ground pole and not jumping it!! Ella has a hip movement that can be musical-get in her way and she's like nails on a chalk board! That's my fault.
Hey, have a good night!

I got on the computer to check on an order from SmartPak, and saw the congrats in my email--hope Bub's not too upset! They are like a married couple. I looked at him and said, "she's nuts".....he shook his head yes--the horse agreed!!

Here is our finial tidbit on the Fabulous Rocky Mountain Horse Breed! In the early 1960s, Sam Tuttle managed the trail riding concession at the Natural Bridge State Park in Powell County, Kentucky. He had as many as fifty horses there, including TOBE. This stallion was often seen tied to the hitching post alongside all the mares. He became quite well known in the ten or so years he was ridden there. Besides breeding, TOBE was used as a trail horse. He carried Sam, and sometimes the trail guides who worked for Sam, with sure-footed ease over mountainous terrain for many years. Although Sam would allow other people to ride TOBE occasionally, it was always a ride closely supervised. He loved to show off his beloved stallion, but also kept a close eye on him. Everyone who rode TOBE enjoyed his gentle temperament and comfortable gait. It amazed people to think the well-mannered horse they were riding was indeed a breeding stallion.
TOBE was used for breeding until July of his thirty-fourth year, and he passed on his gait, disposition, and other great qualities to his offspring. It has been said that TOBE's progeny followed in his "perfectly-timed" footsteps. TOBE sired many fine horses before his death at the ripe old age of thirty-seven. One outstanding trait passed on was longevity, as many of his offspring were still breeding into their late twenties and early thirties.
Thank you for your support we appreciate it! Hoping to see him as the top horse tomorrow!!!!!

Celebrating Easter with love, hugs & votes 4 all!
✞ Picking up from yesterday about him tossing his head about bugs. Sometimes I can make a pony tail in his fore lock and that helps a lot. I think he sees his hair sometimes and over reacts, big ol’ treat hound! As soon as we get under the trees on those trails he just stops tossing his head and settles right back into his awesome self. I will add Rocky Mountain facts to my blogs for the rest of our HOTM run. I hope you enjoy them =)
The history of the Rocky Mountain Horse from 1890 to the latter part of the 1900s carries little or no documentation and few facts that can be proven beyond the shadow of doubt. Everyone who personally witnessed the breed's beginnings (back to the 1800s) is deceased, and we have been left with only verbal history passed down from generation to generation. Thus, all that can be recorded at this point in time are the stories recollected by living descendants. Thank you for your support we appreciate it!

As we ate lunch and rested, Whiskey walked over to me several times. He would nuzzle my hand (at the time I didn’t know he was a treat hound) and I felt as if we bonded and we were linked in some way. I told Karla right then and there that if they ever sold Whiskey to please contact me first. He has marbling on his lower legs that are silver, chocolate and nearly liver color (see his profile picture for today). It amazes me to still look at how he is marked; he is just absolutely beautiful-but I’m parcel!!! He is our escape artist, the one that can get into or out of ANYTHING; such a smarty pants and a treat hound lol. Thank you for your support we appreciate it!

Today was awesome one of my friends came and rode with me she has a page for cody check it out! anyways I thought we would do a just a little riding pop over a couple of cross rails but then heres how it played out I did flat for a little and then jumped a cross rail that was set up a couple times I added a vertical at the other side of the arena and popped over that then we put two small verticals so we could do a figure 8 and left the crossrail then I made the cross rail around a 2 foot vertical and jumped it then I did the three as a course and get this without reins I tied them up and did it without them it was awesome after that I did a couple of small jumps including a little log jump on the hill(grass) and then took off my saddle and I wasn't sure about it at first b/c last time I didn't have a saddle on was when he had been lame for a little and hadn't done any work and he bucked me off really badly so I started just walking/trotting then cantered a little and jumped the smallest cross rail ever it was amazing I have never felt so close and It just felt magical thanks again

Last Sunday we had a great lesson my first time on a real trail ride with Cowboy, it was really cool we went down the trail to the neighbors grassy airplane runway and got to walk trot and canter then we crossed this wooden bridge trotted by the river to this little hill that we cantered up and then when we turned there was this really big hill we got to canter up it was amazing I felt like I was flying and the view from the top was so amazing I could see EVERYTHING then when we headed back we needed to save time so we crossed through the water and when we went down the bank I was afraid he would jump but he was amazing im so proud of him it was kind of like a cross country training it was awesome well that's all i have to say for now going to the barn again tomorrow so i will definitely tell u guys if anything exciting happens thanks for all your support!!!
