How We Met

Dolly was my first riding horse ever! She is truly a dream come true for me, my brothers and my sister. Our neighbors told us about a horse for sale nearby and we went to look at her.
Once I looked into her big brown eyes there was no way I could leave her! Dolly is a wonderful first horse, enduring with my lack of riding skills, and teaching me to be a better rider at the same time! The Lord has given me a great blessing!

HORSES

You can hear the thunder of hoof beats, under a starlit sky;
The soft nicker in the morning, when the sun is rising high.

You can feel the softness of a velvety nuzzle on your hand;
And the thrill that shoots through you, as you race across the land.

You can see you horses silhouette, as the sun is sinking low;
Their coats shining softly in the sun's warming glow.

You've loved them all your life, a dream, it seems, came at birth;
And all these dream-come-true- s, make you
feel like the richest girl on earth!

"Examine me, O Lord, and prove me; try my reins and my heart." Psalm 26:2

Hope you and your family had a good Valentine's Day
It was a beautiful day here yesterday. The vet was out to do rabies vaccines and draw coggins. BJ knows him by sight and turns around and walks away as soon as he pulls up, lol. Allie wouldn't get out of his pockets, of coutse. I rode Allie out in the pasture after he left, but she was kind of weird about it, kept wanting to leave her buddies and go up into the riding ring area, so not sure how much progress I made. Oh well, any ride is a good ride.
Well, hope you have a great wednesday.

Happy Valentine's Day for your horses and you. I brought a small bag of hearts to share with Whisper, Willow and Mistit, perhaps Jack will take a few. He likes bread better. Going to make sugar roll out cookies later. Of course heart shaped.

Hope you're staying toasty this winter. Any more rides in the snow?
I rode Allie briefly yesterday evening. She was happy with a brief easy ride. She's getting downright bendy at the walk and trot, still in a rope halter. I'm proud of her. We didn't have enough time to try loping. Maybe today. I was out feeding late when the moon came up, and oh my goodness, it was so huge and beautiful! Mattie and I just had to stop and stare at it for a while.
Well, hope you have a great saturday. Take care.

Yep, inside its still chilly, specially when you send us that Southern wind. Plus last night it snowed, just a few inches, but enough for me to have make new paths to the pig pens, and across the lawn to the barn. Sadie thinks all this snow is just great, and she is so funny to watch. Today she found a stick, way bigger than she is, tried to bring it to me to throw, but she forgets to drop it, and when she finally did, it was almost to heavy to throw more than 15 ft. Trys to bring another one of her treasures into the house, but would not fit in length wise in the door way.

Another cold morning, but not too much wind yet, Still can not stay outside too long. This time the cold should not get down to -20-25, but this morning it was -14/-15. I know it is hard to imagine being outside that cold, but sometimes, the colder it get there is less wind, so actually seems warmer. Went threw a lot of books yesterday and magazines, not sure what to do with them. Vet/horse help/and training books. Maybe I should read them more and learn more.

I think the snow looks so beauitful, and soft, and fluffy. When my hands are not cold, I will go for long walks, but usually after chores or working out side my hands are so cold.

Winds were so bad here, and then with temps a bit above zero, it was cold. House was cold too, south winds again.
Snowed about 3-5 inches, but the wind buried all my trails, but the snow is so hard so I am walking on top of it.

So the goats are growing and doing well? They are such cute animals. Do you have dogs that run around? They should help keep the coyotes away too. I think almost every state has coyotes nowdays.
Not much going on here. It's been really windy for about a week, which is unusual day in and day out. I've been debating about getting more hay. What's being shipped up has a lot of leaves in it, which worries me a bit. I think I may just barely have enough.
Well, hope you have a great tuesday.

Didn't ask Mikey how appointments went, I was outside when they came home just about dark. I knew they were here, (Mike went to drop him off at his house), because on the floor were 3 bags of cat litter, one bag of cat food, and a block of salt.
I wish there was a Farm store closer than 100 miles one way. Closest store is a Walmart, local feed stores, grocery, and gas stations. Lots of small specialty stores.

So glad you had a good visit with your older sister and you got to ride together. That's a treat in January, for sure. How are the little goats doing this winter?
Not much here. We're finally getting some much needed rain. The lakes look horrible, which isn't a good way to head towards spring. The horses are a muddy, scrungy-looking looking bunch. I've been so worried about if I could get enough hay for the horses this winter because the pasture dried up last summer, but God has provided, even though I've had to feed a lot more hay than I'd planned on.
Well, gotta head to work. Hope you have a great week.

Your lean-to with the plastic,gives me some good idea for spring. We have a lean-to, but it was set up for a run for chickens, with dog kennel fencing, so every animal uses it from calves, minis, guinea hens and chickens. But I like the idea of heavy duty plastic, sun could help keep it warm too.

Yeah, not only is it the new year, it's the 6th day of it, can you believe? Wow!
Thanks for the compliment on Allie's pic. She's definitely a princess, at least in her own eyes, lol. Such a sassy strong-willed pony. She's been giving her herdmates a hard time, testing the waters to see if she can move up a rank or two. Not so far, thank goodness, it would totally go to her head.
Yeah, I have a theory that their brains sit up between their ears and freeze when it's cold and windy, and they can't think straight. Not really, but I have noticed that they forget their manners when it's cold.
Sounds like the goats are tucked in nice and snug. Hope they stay warm this weekend. Are they predicting extra cold for you too? Sounds like much of the country will be colder.
Well, hope you are doing well and have a great friday.

We have about 7-8 inches of new snow. No trails to follow anymore to feed the pigs in 2 different pen. Horses do not need daily care as far as feeding, since we have 3 big round bales out at a time, and one for the hairy ones. Everything else is in the shed which is sort of my barn, so they get fed 2 a day. Water freezes so fast, so I fill other pans with snow, and tell them it is ice cream. Temps tomorrow are to be down to -20, if no winds it will not be too bad. Still snowing but we are planning on leaving around 10 for my aunt funeral, picking up my Mom and hope my brother plowed her driveway. We were there yesterday to bring her pills from Walmart.

Everyone is staying warm, but me... :) Chicken fluffy their feathers up to stay warm, plus they eat like pigs, who by the way waste too much food, but the birds eat it. One gets done eating first and then they all leave. So their food freezes in the tubs. Does not go to waste, because I haul them into the basement and thaw them out and add hot water and refeed them. Hope you are getting closer to get Christmas ready. We are just getting small things done. Made a batch of sugar cookies late last night, did not roll them out, just made it to small balls and dippe din red colored sugars, they look pretty. We are suppose to be in

Good to hear from you. Yes, winter has certainly arrived. Even down here we've had some ice on the water troughs. Friday is supposed to stay in the 30s as a high, which is unusual for us (don't laugh).
Glad all your critters are doing well. Mine are too. The horses have added more fluff than what they originally grew. All they do is hang out along the fence and wait on their next meal since there's no grass at all in their pasture. I haven't had hardly any time to ride since Thanksgiving due to getting ready for the holidays, but I enjoy my time with them at feeding time.
Hope you're enjoying your Christmas season, and if I don't get to talk to you before then, have a wonderful Christmas.

Wow, even have Thanksgiving dishes all done up. Have a few more minutes now to send out votes. We had 10 for dinner yesterday. Mikey's girl friend made the turkey, which was home raised. Other than the buns, everything was raised in my garden, at least veggies, and all the pickles veggies. No I did not harvest wheat to make the buns. :). Surprised that the pumpkins pie tasted good, but I did cheat and buy bought pie crust....I did practice making crust, but even the dogs would not eat them, Jack the calf loved them. So the hardest part of making the pie, was making the round pie crust into a square cake pan.....but I made it do. Had a couple of guest, just friends of one or two of my sons, who had no where to go, so just tell them come along.

Our weather is so nice for November. But I know its coming...snow. Snow, I do not mind, but rain/snow mixture is hard to deal with. Everything is so wet then frozen. Mistit still wants to stand outside of the shed. Big enough for a whole herd inside, and I know Whisper always makes her move. I think for the winter she can go in with the calf, Jack, but Jack gets grain and she sure does not need it.
Get 150 bales of small bales of hay, so have to move the large chicken/guinea pen out, and clean where it was. Glad to get extra hay, it will help insulate the over head which slides sideweays.

How are things up your way? How's your weather? Ours remains very dry but is cooling off. Have you been able to ride much? Have you seen any more coyotes?
The all breed show I helped at this Saturday was fun. There weren't many people there but the weather was perfect and everyone had a great time. I met a lot of Tackies and owners I know through FB but have never met and they were all very nice. Also saw a couple of Gypsy Vanners (I've seen tons of pics but never met any in person) and a couple of Marchadors from Brazil. It's the perfect laid back atmosphere to introduce a horse to shows and I really hope to get Allie down there sometime.
My Dad's birthday was low key but nice to be with them. Their new house is smaller so most gifts are consumables. Madison painted him a little pic of an old truck in watercolor (both of my kids are decent artists, not bragging or anything, lol).
Well, hoping to ride today, sure miss it. Hope you have a great start to your week.

The hardest part of death, is trying to understand, "why". Death is so painful, to those left behind. Mike's sister Barb, passed away 5mins before they got to Milwaukee, (at her home). He made it back to Powers, Mi. last night, stayed overnight again, and on his way home now. Allie sounds she is starting to understand more of what you are asking of her. Weather here is nice again. Got up to 60 yesterday. I went to visit my sister, Becky, she still can not see much, but we talked while I dug out carrots. Now, I am peeling as many as I can blanch and fit into the freezer.....which there is not alot of room. I will have to eat all the ice cream in it, so there can be more room. Most kittens "want" to eat, but this little guy has to be made to eat. Drinks a bit of warm milk, and will eat tuna, or hamburger bits, if I put it in his mouth. Rubbed him all over, trying to find "something" that hurts on him. The way he trys to crawl away, is like he is afraid. This morning he at least looked alert.
Butchering went well yesterday, going to go help cut up the meat in just a bit. That takes the longest. But everyone wants their hams and bacon smoked, so those are big pieces. Lard I will give to my sister for making soap, and the rest I will render down and mix with sunflower seeds, and cracked corn for the birds and chickens. Nothing gets wasted. Even the hide gets spread out for the wild birds to eat the fat off. But for now, it has to be rolled up and frozen, until needed.

Started sending out votes at 6:30 this morning and here it is nearly 11:30 and just making the first comment. Been cutting more firewood. Most oak, and not small this time. Stuff is about 20 pounds each, and then have to care 1 piece at a time out to the road to the truck. But weather is so nice today, and any time I am in the woods is great. Horses are out enjoying the sun, sleeping and cows are laying down, and no rain today, but in a few days it will be back with the wind.

Are you getting to ride alot and enjoy some nice fall weather? We've cooled off too, usually highs in the 70s, and lows in the 50s or 60s. Unfortunately, still no rain. We are very dry, but grass has died, so there's not much to water.
The drills sound like fun. It's good you have 2 horses and siblings to practice with. Drills would be dull by yourself, lol.
Allie is doing fine. I haven't been able to ride in a week, so she's usually full of herself and very stiff in her face when I start back riding. She is one pig-headed pony, but so friendly that you can't help but love her.

Rained most of the day, so I spent time cleaning headstalls, reins, and leather tack. I have way toooooo much, so was putting things together for sale. Looking out the kitchen window, I seen a fox grab a chicken running back to the coop, as the rain started again. I did not know I could run that fast, but across the lawn I ran, opened the horse gate, and yelled, (my Rebel yell) so loud that the fox was surprised. It dropped its lunch, chicken ran back, fox ran into the next pasture, and I ran after it. Finally, it ran into the woods, with my warning. I set the live trap near the coop, and locked all cats in for the night. Empty this morning, so nobody goes out today. Now, thinking back, the other day all the guineas were making very loud noises, right in the north pasture where the fox ran, and I bet it was in the long grass, when I went out there to see what the guinea were seeing. I know they do that when the neighbor's dog comes over. I count each batch of chickens/chicks each night and look and look if one is missing. So far, I lost one guinea and one young chick this summer. Now I think I know where they went. If it had not been raining, I would most likely been outside working or the dogs would have been outside. I did come in soaked and shoes muddy, but at least the hen was OK. Last night, she was up in the roost with the others, but I am watching her to make sure she is eating and drinking.

Raining again, cold rain, and very windy. Still have a few chores to finish up outside. Rain and wind is bring down some of the leaves off the maple trees. Time to clean more tack but in the house today. With all the rain, so many mold spots on the leather. What was that stuff called to keep moist out of the tack totes/boxes?? I did look when we were at Menard's, but forgot what the name was.

Most of the ducks and geese, along with the birds, totally leave Wisconsin. They have more sense that people. Some do stay near the open waters in southern Wis. near the Mississippi. Yesterday was so nice out. I was digging up potatoes for storeage for the winter, and Sadie was so "helpful". Well, lets just say I wish she would dig in the right places, and when I throw the bad ones in the "bad" bucket, she would leave them there. Today wwe just got back from hauling in firewood. We go where they have cut and take the limbs, or stumps that are left. Lots of heavy wood and long walks caring one or two pieces at a time. You can not back the truck up to the pile, so to speak. You haul and carry. You sure get your excise and I will find out tomorrow what muscles I forgot to use. Not really, I very seldom get sore, but I do listen to Mike's complains.

Glad you're getting to enjoy the fall weather. Any riding? How are those cute goats?
Can't believe it's the last day of sept already! I'm loving the cooler weather (52 this am) but not looking forward to the time change. It's really a challenge to get the critters fed in the evening so early.
The field trip yesterday was fun. My favorite was the blacksmith, I wouldn't mind giving that a try.
Rode Allie yesterday, and she was right back to always trying to go faster and worrying about it when we did. Gotta figure out what to do about that. The progress she made in the roundpen isn't really carrying over to the riding ring. I'm thinking we're gonna have to do a ton of loping till she realizes it's not the end of the world, it just makes her tired. And pray she doesn't buck or run wide open in the process.
Well, hope you have a great friday. Take care.

Thank You for sending Mistit a vote of congratulations for being HOTD.
I just wish she would have her foal. She still is fat belly wise and has milk. I wish it did not 150 dollar farm call to have the vet come out, but she does not seem stressed or off feed, runs around with Willow and Whisper. So, if it a fault PG, then I will know soon.
Rained all day long yesterday, not hard just light rain, and wind, temps were around 44, so fall is certainly here. Geese are heading your way, been so cloudy, but I can hear them. Caterpillars are everywhere, it seems I am always putting them out of harms way, so they do not get stepped on or ran over.

Busy trying to play catch up, neighbor stopped over yesterday morning, just as we were to leave to pick up Mikey's pills and take Dominic home. She always has so much to tall about....she the reason we do not need a newspaper.... :). She knows all the news. So her 2 hour visit puts me behind all day. He had to leave early to dress Mikey's toes/foot, before we went to Mass. How I have a double batch of tomotoes/celery/chili based which did not get into jars...yet. Will can it tomorrow, but want to get everything ready today. Did most of the work last night, but Sunday I don't do work that can wait. God must have made this day for me to rest, so I try to just pretend I am resting.
Heard from Eric and he said the ponies are enjoying all the extra attention and kids really love them. I knew he had a incubator and wanted guineas too, so I collected eggs for him, and he said his wife had set them already. She was so excited to get them....maybe more than the ponies, but I don't think so.

Not sure about the sale today....want to go, but anytime I take a day off, the fairies seem to take one too. Yesterday, I noticed the spiders started decorating for Halloween, spider webs in every room. The dust bunnies came out and really multiply, and Sadies's mess under the table got bigger. She seems to think, all cardboard boxes need to be tore into 1 inch x 1 inches or smaller.
Ponies did wonderful getting into the trailer, but I felt like a "Judes goat" leading them in. But their new home is so nice. They will have their own stalls, but for now the have a small pen, which will go into a bigger pasture, and 3 kids to love them. I brought everything I could think of that they might need, treats, apples, carrots, brushes, combs, extra halters, 3 new lead ropes, hoof pick, a few stuffed horses, books on ponies, and a few other horsey things. They showed us the other barn, where they had ducks and chickens, everything was so clean, and no mud. I think the ponies will love it there. But Mistit is still calling for them. So that part is so sad for me. I spent extra time with her last night after we got home.
