How We Met

Dolly was my first riding horse ever! She is truly a dream come true for me, my brothers and my sister. Our neighbors told us about a horse for sale nearby and we went to look at her.
Once I looked into her big brown eyes there was no way I could leave her! Dolly is a wonderful first horse, enduring with my lack of riding skills, and teaching me to be a better rider at the same time! The Lord has given me a great blessing!

HORSES

You can hear the thunder of hoof beats, under a starlit sky;
The soft nicker in the morning, when the sun is rising high.

You can feel the softness of a velvety nuzzle on your hand;
And the thrill that shoots through you, as you race across the land.

You can see you horses silhouette, as the sun is sinking low;
Their coats shining softly in the sun's warming glow.

You've loved them all your life, a dream, it seems, came at birth;
And all these dream-come-true- s, make you
feel like the richest girl on earth!

"Examine me, O Lord, and prove me; try my reins and my heart." Psalm 26:2

Most of the ducks and geese, along with the birds, totally leave Wisconsin. They have more sense that people. Some do stay near the open waters in southern Wis. near the Mississippi. Yesterday was so nice out. I was digging up potatoes for storeage for the winter, and Sadie was so "helpful". Well, lets just say I wish she would dig in the right places, and when I throw the bad ones in the "bad" bucket, she would leave them there. Today wwe just got back from hauling in firewood. We go where they have cut and take the limbs, or stumps that are left. Lots of heavy wood and long walks caring one or two pieces at a time. You can not back the truck up to the pile, so to speak. You haul and carry. You sure get your excise and I will find out tomorrow what muscles I forgot to use. Not really, I very seldom get sore, but I do listen to Mike's complains.

Glad you're getting to enjoy the fall weather. Any riding? How are those cute goats?
Can't believe it's the last day of sept already! I'm loving the cooler weather (52 this am) but not looking forward to the time change. It's really a challenge to get the critters fed in the evening so early.
The field trip yesterday was fun. My favorite was the blacksmith, I wouldn't mind giving that a try.
Rode Allie yesterday, and she was right back to always trying to go faster and worrying about it when we did. Gotta figure out what to do about that. The progress she made in the roundpen isn't really carrying over to the riding ring. I'm thinking we're gonna have to do a ton of loping till she realizes it's not the end of the world, it just makes her tired. And pray she doesn't buck or run wide open in the process.
Well, hope you have a great friday. Take care.

Thank You for sending Mistit a vote of congratulations for being HOTD.
I just wish she would have her foal. She still is fat belly wise and has milk. I wish it did not 150 dollar farm call to have the vet come out, but she does not seem stressed or off feed, runs around with Willow and Whisper. So, if it a fault PG, then I will know soon.
Rained all day long yesterday, not hard just light rain, and wind, temps were around 44, so fall is certainly here. Geese are heading your way, been so cloudy, but I can hear them. Caterpillars are everywhere, it seems I am always putting them out of harms way, so they do not get stepped on or ran over.

Busy trying to play catch up, neighbor stopped over yesterday morning, just as we were to leave to pick up Mikey's pills and take Dominic home. She always has so much to tall about....she the reason we do not need a newspaper.... :). She knows all the news. So her 2 hour visit puts me behind all day. He had to leave early to dress Mikey's toes/foot, before we went to Mass. How I have a double batch of tomotoes/celery/chili based which did not get into jars...yet. Will can it tomorrow, but want to get everything ready today. Did most of the work last night, but Sunday I don't do work that can wait. God must have made this day for me to rest, so I try to just pretend I am resting.
Heard from Eric and he said the ponies are enjoying all the extra attention and kids really love them. I knew he had a incubator and wanted guineas too, so I collected eggs for him, and he said his wife had set them already. She was so excited to get them....maybe more than the ponies, but I don't think so.

Not sure about the sale today....want to go, but anytime I take a day off, the fairies seem to take one too. Yesterday, I noticed the spiders started decorating for Halloween, spider webs in every room. The dust bunnies came out and really multiply, and Sadies's mess under the table got bigger. She seems to think, all cardboard boxes need to be tore into 1 inch x 1 inches or smaller.
Ponies did wonderful getting into the trailer, but I felt like a "Judes goat" leading them in. But their new home is so nice. They will have their own stalls, but for now the have a small pen, which will go into a bigger pasture, and 3 kids to love them. I brought everything I could think of that they might need, treats, apples, carrots, brushes, combs, extra halters, 3 new lead ropes, hoof pick, a few stuffed horses, books on ponies, and a few other horsey things. They showed us the other barn, where they had ducks and chickens, everything was so clean, and no mud. I think the ponies will love it there. But Mistit is still calling for them. So that part is so sad for me. I spent extra time with her last night after we got home.

Hope you have had a good week and some horse time. Hasn't the harvest moon been beautiful lately?
I got to ride Allie yesterday for the first time in over a week, and she did well. It was good to be back on her. I'll take the roundpen down as soon as I have time and use the panels to cut the riding ring in half. I'm hoping she can handle loping in a bigger area, but not too much bigger.
Well, hope you have a great saturday. Take care.

I guess I love all my horses and ponies toooooo much, because them having a new home is more important than making money off them. I very seldom, sell for money, this time I am doing a trade(s) for rifle/gun. I have seen the little hobby farm, and can see the love the father has built into his barn and how he treats his other animals.
I take in horses/ponies that need a home, because they in need of help. Usually, they are just babies, and just are not taught anything, afraid and not handled. After, I work with them, and make them ready for their new home, I start looking for someone who wants what they have to give. Pickles, I really thought I would want to keep, but he turned out better than what I thought he could.
Mike has to rewire the horse trailer, since the little pigs, would play under it, and must have created a short. Trouble is, with his artificial knees, he can not get down on the ground....well, he can, but then can not get back up. Waiting for the neighbor boy to come over and help him out.

your weather sounds wonderful. fall is always such a relief after a hot summer, like spring is a relief after a cold dark winter. we've had a few days to only hit a high in the 80s, but most of them are still in the 90s so far. glad you were able to enjoy a nice ride.
i got the idea of "broom ball" from a playday game. you just swat one of those big bouncy balls around with a broom from horseback. there wasnt any game to it by myself, of course; i was using it as a less boring way to work on turning for Allie. turns out, she really likes following the ball and i seldom have to steer her after it. it's fun though.
well, this week is busy with work and errands and appointments, so no ride time. ugh. hope your week is going well though. take care.

As I type, I hope you can hear Mother Nature being a naughty, naughty lady. BIG LOUD thunders, and what a fireworks display...never mind the down pour. My tulips, I planted where I took out the turtle pond "really" are getting the soaking they needed....might decide to bloom before winter. It started before 4 this morning and suppose to continue all week, I hope not this hard. Let everyone one just as it got light, because the rain had stopped. I guess chickens knew more than I did, because they just stayed in the coop, and the ones in the shed did not want to go outside either. Had a good visit with my sister at Mom's, she comes for the Hawkins parade each yr, by herself, and picks up my other sister, who hates to drive because she lost her one eye at 8 yrs old. Up until last yr she had a fake eye, but because of a infection it ate up some of the support of the fake eye, and now has to wait until everything clears up. That and her insurance does not want to pay anything, because the only place she can go is out of network. My sister will take 5 of the baby guinea hens to a friend who wanted some, and I told him I would make sure he got them. I gave him eggs to incubate, but he said he did not know what went wrong, but each time you try a hatch, you learn new things not to do or to do, that you did before. Hey, it stopped storming for a few minutes....yep, I see ponies coming out of the barn.

Went to pick up a new front door from Menard's Labor Day special. Another long ride, over hour ride, to nearest store, long ride after we went 50 miles the other way to Tomahawk for a cookot. Really, Mikey needed one, and we went along and decided to get one also. I "think" we were invited because we have the credit card... :), he has a very hard time being on disability, so we do not mind. Now the front door we have (no window) will go to the back door, and the back door, will go out in the shed, which is my barn. Playing musical doors in a few days. And the shed door, will be used for a baby pig pen, turn sideways. Nothing gets wasted her, I try to recycle everything I can. Dominic loves to call it "Hording" but I have a use for nearly everything. I like to work on my projects with me, and getting very good at taking things apart and painting it or use it for another project. He turned my bookshelf, into a chicken nest with dividers. He is taking a shop class this year, and tells me about all the things he wants to make, so I hope he keeps that mind going, because he is miles ahead of other kids his age.

Weather is feeling more like fall, a few nights with 35, but usually in the 40's. Got home from Mass yesterday afternoon, and not one horse...pony...of steer were in the field. Took a bit to find them, got all the horses in first, and then tracked down the steers and new heifer in or at the edge of the neigbhbors corn field. Finally got everyone in, and it was getting dark. I guess all that walking and running made me tired because I slept until 7 this morning.

Sounds like a beautiful ride. Can't blame Cutter for grabbing a snack here and there, lol, a girl gets hungry.
Had a good ride on Allie in the afternoon. With the cooler weather and 3 days off, she was pretty full of herself. I played a little broom ball again (she definitely was tracking the ball better this time) and then we did some turns into the fence, first at a walk, then a trot, then a lope. She can whip around pretty good to the left, kinda muddled through to the right. It was a lot of fun. Worked up quite a sweat, both of us. So she got hosing off afterward, and Madison and I got in the pool. Those one or two cooler days really chilled the water, brrrr. Had fun but couldn't stay in long.
Well, hope you have a great sunday. Take care.

Mike is still going to be "bumming" today, have to run to Ladysmith for grocery shopping, then to Phillips after school to watch the high school football game, and bring Dominic home with him. Saturday to Mass, and Sunday to Tomahawk for his oldest brother family get together. I get alot of work done when he is not here. All small jobs, but lots of cleaning in the garden and feed it to the little pigs, and their moms. If you check under Willows page, I put a picture of the Scottish Highlander heifer, who is a yr old.

Well, our little farm has grown by one...wish I could announce that it was a foal, but not, it is a heifer yearling. She is a Scottish Highlander, they are a shaggy long haired stocky type of cow, with long horns. Right now she is afraid, but we have her in the pen where the ponies and Willow were in at night. Now, to think of a name. We have been working on getting her since last spring. They are not tamed yet, so the guy had a bit of trouble getting them (3) of them into his trailer. The other 2 went to my son and his girlfriend. Next the little bull will come.

I'm so sorry about your kitty. It's so hard to loose a beloved animal, they make such a special place in our hearts. I hope you and your siblings have indeed been comforted in your sorrow.
We were blessed with some rain last week, which we desperately needed. This week is supposed to be dry, but only get into the upper 80s. I've been riding Allie often in the roundpen so I can lope her safely and shes doing well, even though it's a shame that after 6 mo of riding, we're back in the roundpen again. But you do what you gotta do.

Raining again, and very cool. I have a sweatshirt on, (and all the windows open), plan on making banana bread, and oatmeal cookies, plus put something in the oven for supper. Looking out in the rain, I think of all the things I could be doing or plan to do. I will be working out in the shed, moving the turtle cage in for the keets, as soon as the rain stops. Mike is looking for stuff to do, before its time for Mass this afternoon. I like going to Church for Mass then, instead of Sunday morning.

Awe Monday, not sure what to do first. Chores are done, need to move the white guineas into the other pen, (getting ready for winter, UGH!!) but they need time to adjust to a different pen and house. After both little dogs went home, I need to wash all their blankets and pads, so they are ready when those little guys return. My cats miss them already. Tomatoes are finally getting ripe, and more cockburrs need chopping down....some of them I feel like hollowing "TIMBER" when they fall. Finish moving the turtle pen into the barn for the baby keets too. Mike has taken Mikey to another dr appointment for his toe, the big sores are infected, even if the drs at Ladysmith say it looks good, I say it needs a "real" doctor to look at it, because it is infected. That's why no one likes going the the Ladysmith Hospital, when a sore has pus, smells, and red....that is what is called infection and needs to be treated.....a patient should not have to beg to get some sort of antibiotics for it.

I had a long talk with Mistit while I brushed her, she just kept nodding her head agreeing with me, about it time to have that baby.....its been a long summer, on baby watch.
Sunday vote from Whisper, Willow and the little herd for you. NIce out today....so far...getting some jobs done outside, that usually is too hot out in the morning to do. Trying to move the turtle cage out to the shed for the little keets, because they are out growing their rabbit cage. The turtle cage is about 5 feet high, 4 ft wide and 10-12 ft long, and no bottom, so they can learn to scratch in the dirt. Because its made from chicken wire, I can put long sticks in for roosts, also put branches, and plants so that they learn to hide in the grasses. I feed them clover and grasses now, but cut it up with the scissors. They are too small to be out with the little chicks, yet. The keets have one fault, they hide their little heads into a hole....like between the hay bales, when being picked on, thinking they can not be seen, but they do not know how to move backwards, only forwards, so they get deep between the bales and die. They are a very smart bird...except for that one stupid fault. So I keep them safe until they are older. Most are spoken for except for the ones I will keep...some different colors than what I have now

Some good new on Mistit...her milk is now yellow, before it was just white coloring. Still keep her separated at night, just incase. Rainy again today, but not a all day rain, but enough to make everything sticky and humidity sort of bad. Try to chop down "cock-bur or burdock" this morning, and some are getting like little trees. Like to do them just before they seed out, it is like a small ball of sticky seeds which get in the horses manes and tails, and nearly impossible to get out.

A barn full of fresh hay sure smells good. Weve been getting a little much needed rain in the area lately, so there may be a second cutting around here too. Thats good that you enjoy putting up veggies, sounds like you'll be doing a lot of it soon. A day in the kitchen makes me feel like I'm going to explode, I just can't do it. Same with shopping.

Good Sunday Morning vote.
Willow seems to enjoy being here. Gets along of attention, everyday, I put her halter on, give her a treat, ride her a bit in the pen. She was a kids horses I am sure, likes to walk 10 ft, when I tell her to, then stop, wait until I tell her again, another 10 ft, stop wait. I can just see a kid riding her and continuously let her stop and eat. She is also hard to get her to come to me, when she see I have a halter. But does not run, just stays out of my reach. It is hard to work with her with all the little ponies right there, looking for their treat too. Or nibbling on my boots, to see if that is where I put their treat. There is no hiding them, because they smell so good....Apple and Peppermint. My pockets smell like them, even if I do not have any with me.

Finally have a few days in a row with no chance of rain, so cutting the new seeding today. Poured yesterday, nearly all morning. It had stopped for a bit, and I was moving some of the keets, baby guinea hens, out to a better rabbit cage in the shed, when it started up big time, so I was halfway across the lawn, and ran with the rabbit cages trying to protect them from getting wet. Ended up working out in the shed, until rain let back up. Found a box of headstalls, starting to mold, huh....not even done cleaning saddles, and having to work on the smaller leather things. Washed most of them in vineger water, because read (somewhere) it would kill mold spores, drying is slow, because of the moister in the air. Today, it is cool outside, should stay like that all weekend. About 62 right

Going to storm today, Mike is taking Mikey to his dr. appointment, and will stop and get me "another" bag of chick starter. Probably, would not need it, but when I sell keets or chicks, I send some feed with them. Sometimes, a 3 pound coffee can full, and with the month old chicks eating like they were starving, 50 pounds goes very fast.
Humidity is so high that the floors, (wood) are wet. Everything is sticky, including my keyboard. Baby sitting 2 little yappers, (dogs) for the past week, Barky is the worst, because he likes to live up to his name. Chance is a Yorkie and wants out and two seconds later wants in....runs back and forth between the front and back door barking. I go to let him in and he is already running to the other door. I'm sure posting will come back to you. If you let the horse's motion push you up, there's not too much you can do to mess it up. And it sounds like that's the most comfortable way to ride Cutter's trot, for sure. Glad she enjoys her English saddle so much. You get used to throwing that little saddle up on a horse and the big western saddles nearly dislocate your shoulder when you use them, lol.
Allie has been doing pretty good the last few rides. She gets to a place she's doing well, so I throw in something new, and she struggles with that for a while, and so on. BJ did that a little too, but the more he learned, the less new things bothered him. I'm hoping Allie will hit that point soon too. I love when they finally get it and the light bulb goes on.
Haven't seen the goat lately, nor his body, so that's good. The guy that helped, whose son in law is with animal control, said they were going to try to catch him last saturday, so i hope they did.

My flower gardens, at least most of them bloom year after yr, I add plants here or there but then the chicks think I am making them new ground to scratch in, I like bulbs that just stay in the ground. Have a few bulb type plants that need to be taken inside, so those are planted in big tubs and moved where there is a empty spot or filling in is needed.
I have baby or young trees growing all over, but try to plant them in spots that will provide shade until they are about 3-4 feet tall, and also in the fall the dead leaves or stems provide cover from the snow and cold, like Mother Nature does in the woods.
Its good that you can ride nearly daily. Willow has been running alot more, maybe feeling better, well then she limps. Its the 2 naughty boys and Paisley that want to race with her, that gets things started.
I cleaned up my incubator fast yesterday morning, collected all the dark guinea hen eggs, about 6 dozen. Cleaned them up the best I could, hens bury them in the dirt to keep them cool, but usually they just up and leave if not ready to set. Delivery the eggs and incubator to some 4-H kids so they could "try" to raise some guineas of their own and sell the extras at the next swap or keep until spring to sell. I have 10 more of mine being sold today. Will keep some to replace a few colors I do not have, and save some for a guy I know who does not have any, even if all the eggs I gave him were good, at lockdown, something happened in the last few days. He felt so bad about it.

Willow certainly is a horse of a different color. Bay roan is about right. She does not have much of a mane or tail, typical Appy style. Last night she was limping again, so did not ride. This morning the weather is just about perfect, 49 degree. Yesterday, not too hot, (about 70), so I did alot of barn and chicken coop cleaning. Finish taking the last 2 wheelbarrow loads out, and all the old sand, straw, from where the little chicks were in the pen, hauled it all over to the area, where I have to redo the flower bed. First I had to pull all the weeds out, fed them to pigs, and take out any bulbs, like iris. So had 5 loads in one pile, to smooth out later. Pulled all the poppy plants out since they have all bloomed, and are nearly ready to spill out there seeds....poppy seeds!! But too many in that bed, since I have a way of over planting my flowers. No rhyme or reason, when I plant flowers. My butterfly garden is at least half-way organized with plants, but thats so there is always something blooming. Going to take some of the guineas to a lady so have to go catch the month old ones soon. They can fly a bit, so not so easy as just taking them out of the pen. I moved white guineas hens into a outdoor pen and put all 40 little chicks and the 5 older guineas into their pen inside the barn. They looked so happy running and trying to fly. Gave them pallets to learn how to roost on, and feed pans all over. Tomorrow is the reunion, so have to get ready for that too.

Thank You for all your kind words. Life is always exciting here, because I am always trying to stay 2 steps ahead of My Banker. My grandson loves cats, and so now we are a kitten hunt, he just told me, Grandma, when I get old enough to leave home, I am going to have a dog of my own and as many cats as I can, well, maybe at least 3 or 4, but if I have to can I bring them to you, because your animals are always so happy. Then he said, I am happy when I come here, because you don't care if I talk to the animals, like my parents do. I was smiling ear to ear, and said, he could bring all the animals here that need homes. I sure hope he doesn't bring too many, but they are all welcome.

Thank You for your vote. Raining right now, so perhaps, I can get some time to put the ponies in one group, instead of 4 pages. But I am trying to clean up saddles so I can sell them, with this humidity some of my leather in the tack room is getting mold on it. My grandson is staying for a few days, and I will put his hands to work. Thank You again.

Going to be a hot, mucky day, but weather man is calling for bad thunderstorms, for our county and north of us. Mike has to take our son Mike, in for surgery this morning, so since it is nearly a 2 hour drive, he left at 5:30 this morning. My son, needs to have a stint put behind his knee, because his toes are turning black (spot) from lack of blood. Being a diabetic all those yrs has destroyed his blood vessels. If you have extra prayers send them his way. He has already lost his other leg up to his knee about 10 yrs ago.

Very humid today, still calling for rain, but high temps too. At least 84 now, but there is a nice breeze too. Had to run to get a part for the tractor, so sort of late for me, about 11 now. We have about 15-16 acres of hay, only cut about half of it down and had a guy round bale it. Going to try out a small sq. baler to put up the hay from new seeding. We did not want to take the chance of getting it down, then get rained on because it is thick. Trouble is no barn the type where you had a hay mount like the old barns. Can store some inside side the shed, but not more than a 150.

We are in our real dry hot dog days of summer so I am only riding Deacon in the early morning. I am outside by 6:30 am to catch and saddle him then I started with 20 minute rides and increased to 30 minutes Sunday morning. I will be off Friday and the following Tuesday and will ride 30 min. each day. If he is still doing well I may increase to 40 minutes next weekend. He has done very well. I have been flexing, backing, side passing and walk trot only. May try a slow canter next weekend. Have a wonderful day!

Come visit me, ♥ Deacon thanks you 4 Oct. HOTM.

Whisper, Willow, and the little herd are sending you a vote. Hay was cut yesterday, all except where we planted new seeding. Because that will take longer to dry, and its calling for rain again. Before, the weather station said rain on Thursday, then changed it Wednesday. So we left that part, going to small bale it, then try to figure out where to store it.

A vote from Whisper, Willow and the little herd. Cloudy today and is suppose to rain. Can not get 3 nice days in a row to make hay, and since we do not have equipment have to have neighbors help. I finished the garden, at least of pulling 5 gallon buckets of weeds out. I have been eating beets and carrots already, plus things that grow fast like lettuce and radishes. Cucumbers, winter and summer squash, way too many tomatoes, since I had to replant about 16 of them, I now have close to 25 plants, many just come up by themselves, and I move them to a row, or a place where something did not grow. Dill is growing here and there, but I also plant it in flower beds, since butterflies like to lay their eggs on it. Potatoes are now have flowers. Flower beds mostly can take care of themselves, since they are "grow where you fall" type gardens. Lots of them about 17 small ones, and all around the house. I have no color theme, just what the butterflies and birds like. I have one corner of the house, where the water hose comes out, that I need to redo, since I had to dig it up, but this year, I just planted pumpkins there, to keep the weeds down.
