How We Met

Dolly was my first riding horse ever! She is truly a dream come true for me, my brothers and my sister. Our neighbors told us about a horse for sale nearby and we went to look at her.
Once I looked into her big brown eyes there was no way I could leave her! Dolly is a wonderful first horse, enduring with my lack of riding skills, and teaching me to be a better rider at the same time! The Lord has given me a great blessing!

HORSES

You can hear the thunder of hoof beats, under a starlit sky;
The soft nicker in the morning, when the sun is rising high.

You can feel the softness of a velvety nuzzle on your hand;
And the thrill that shoots through you, as you race across the land.

You can see you horses silhouette, as the sun is sinking low;
Their coats shining softly in the sun's warming glow.

You've loved them all your life, a dream, it seems, came at birth;
And all these dream-come-true- s, make you
feel like the richest girl on earth!

"Examine me, O Lord, and prove me; try my reins and my heart." Psalm 26:2

Miss You, take care...
We really have had some crazy weather this summer, I'm sure I mentioned it before, I know everyone is afraid of something, my thing is STORMS, can't explain it, it comes over me like a wave, terrible anxiety, uneasiness, I pace, I can't relax, once we had a tornado lock down at work, it was not a pretty site, everyone I work with is now aware of my phobia. Today is suppose to be nice, as long as we ride around the puddles we will be OK. We left a vote, Love Donna Lee

WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN?
Well, let's see, Charlie is kicking much less, and with all the padding up, I feel better about less chance of injury. From his behavior under saddle I have to say he has NO UNSOUNDNESS, all is well. Sterly is plugging along she never complains, we keep a close eye this time of year, if she is laboring in her breathing we put her in with her big fan on, she usually settles within 10 minutes. If it is real bad I can give her a bit of Ventipulimin, but they can get dependent on it, so I only use it when necessary. We had a great ride yesterday before it got too hot, today is forecast for showers, sounds like vacuuming and laundry, ugh..we voted, Love Donna Lee

Everet Shaw, who rode his share of great steer roping horses, told Hyde
that Blue was the best horse at Cheyenne that year. Hyde and Del both felt
that Blue started out of the box quicker and could catch cattle easier than
any horse they had ridden. The combination of Blue's athletic ability and
Del's training made him hard to beat. ~Thanks for voting~ **Copper**

This program
produced the stallion Gooseberry, Crow Creek (Lory's top calf horse), and
many good mares. Hyde and Dede then bought the other half interest in Blue
Valentine from Del. Hyde felt like it was a great privilege to rope steers
on Blue. In 1970 Hyde roped at his last Cheyenne Frontier Days on Blue. ~Thanks for voting~ **Copper**

The tradition continues when... my mother, Dede (Buster's daughter) married my father , Hyde. Hyde started breeding Ambrose mares to Hayes' Plenty Coup, then took that cross and bred to Blue Valentine. ~Thanks for voting~ **Copper**

Spangle's Story Continued:
Eventually, after working Spangle in the round pen for a couple months, I got on and rode him at a walk. The next time I rode we trotted. We have been working on walking and trotting under saddle for a while. Two months ago we tried loping. He bucked. I made him gallop once I was safely on the ground. Got back on and walked and trotted him. I also lunged him at a lope.

Hyde inherited from his father the satifaction of riding a good horse he knew he had raised. In the fall of 1956, Ken Gunter gave Del Haverty the pick of the Red Man colts. Del picked a blue roan stallion named Blue Valentine. Del trained Blue to rope calves, tie-down team rope, and haze dogging steers. ~Thanks for voting~ **Copper**

Around 1951 they purchased Texas Blue Bonnet, a son of Joe Hancock. They started crossing him on their own mares and in 1955 a patron mare bred to him produced a foal named Plenty Coup, who went on to also produce many top colts. At about the same time my grandfather King Merritt, brought one of the first Quarter horse stallions, "Ole Red P-9" to Wyoming. ~Thanks for voting~ **Copper**

I am gonna start telling you a story of a Quarter horse named "Blue Valentine."

It all began in 1880 when my grand father , Vince Hayes, trailed a herd of good mares from FT. Riley, Nevada to Thermopolis, Wyoming. His two sons Buster and Laurie, continued the tradition of raising and riding top horses and sought ways to improve them. ~Thanks for voting~ **Copper**

I hope y'all enjoyed the story of "Charlie."

We brought our slant load trailer to pick Spangle up. A little excitement on the way, we had a blowout on the trailer! Thankfully we didn’t have Spangle yet. We changed the tire and went and got Spangle. When we arrived, Spangle looked a little chubbier than he did before(He was chubby before too), but that was ok. They said he was a great loader. They were wrong. It took a little while to get him in the trailer, but we did it.

How could anyone throw away much less abuse such a sweet kind intelligent horse? How we found/bought Spangle:
We needed a horse to keep Rose company, but we also wanted a horse for my mom to ride. I found Spangle on Craigslist. We went to look at him. He was the perfect size for my mom and was calm. My mom also liked his personality. A week after going to look at him we brought our trailer to pick him up… More tomorrow!

I lunged the horses yesterday. Spangle did great! I expected him to be a little grumpy, but he wasn't! He was good. Rose was her normal frisky self:)

Charlie says "unfortunately my new mom (Lahle) lost her own horse, just after I arrived at Far West Farms. She was absolutely devastated. Far west's kind barn manager knew how sad she was and let her take me on as a project since she really did not want anything to do with horses anymore and I did not want anything to do with people. We were a perfect match and bonded quickly, and before long, Far West made it possible for us to be together forever."

He was so starved he could only have hay and in carefully measured amounts and Charlie was not allowed to have any treats. When a horse is that starved uncontrolled refeeding can lead to terrible medical problems such as colic,laminitis kidney failure, and even death. As tempting as it is to just start throwing food at a starving horse, I would learn it is an art and should involve a vet or someone who has experience with refeeding.

Hope ya'll have had nice weather and a good Saturday. Leaving a afternoon vote, i will try and get on again Tuesday and tell about our ride. Thanks your votes!

A facebook donor sent a donation for Charlie's bail. [God bless you Amber Reed and anyone else who also helped raise Charlie's bail.] Rescue day 2-September 2,2012: A kind woman, a local trained, took Charlie. I think she may have even contributed yo, or paid the rest of his bail. But she was the one who took responsibiity for him and saw that he got immediate veterinary treatment. The trainer had a friend another trainer who was looking for a school horse and she saw how sweet Charlie was and had high hopes that with proper care he could be a strong,healthy, horse again.

On September 1,2012 Charlie was sent to an auction in Ontario, CA. Volunteers from auction Horses rescue were there, as they always are, when new horses come in. They saw Charlie among the sick,aging,injured and young untrained horses in the lot awaiting their fate and posted pictures on their Facebook page.

If you ever see horses or ponies at a summer rental barn,fair,zoo, or cardinal etc. that are thin sick or injured - report it them. Don't accept excuses like "he's just old." The reality is , some business buy up old, sick horses because they are gentle use them up over the summer then send them back to auction, they pay little for them and get money back. When they are resold and just make as much money off them as possible over the summer. These horses are underfed, receive little or no medical care or ever see a farrier. No horse deserves that kind of treatment and exploitation.

Stall pads go up today...
Good Morning, HC is so S L O W, sorry I wasn't on yesterday, it was a budy day. We had my brother and his family for dinner. Robbie, my brother helps me a lot with computer issues, and I like to have them for dinner once in a while to say thanks. My sister in law suggested turning the radio off at night, that maybe Charlie finds it distracting, it's worth a try, but I think most folks leave a radio on? I always have. Someone else suggested opening the stall door and making it one large area. I don't like that idea, Sterly will have no where to go if Charlie is being a goofball. I hope the pads work. Have a great weekend, we voted, Love Donna Lee
