Everybody here is doing well. I finally ordered the pre-made herb mix last night, but BJ is breathing so much better with the cooler weather anyway, so it will be hard to tell if it helps. Allie is up to 14 hands, yay. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that she gets to 14.2. She isn't stocky at all, built kinda like an Arabian, so her shortness and her slight build make her look fragile. I keep hearing how tough Tackies are though, they just don't look it, at least as babies they don't. She has a lot of spunk and energy though. I'm spending this week getting ready for Thanksgiving. My daughter is out of school all week too.
How are you doing? Will you have a nice break from uni over the Christmas holidays? Do you live at home during the semester or do you live on campus? Are you getting any riding in? Hope all's well and you're having a good week.

Come visit me, Allie -honored to be Nov. HOTM & BJ and his mom,Gracie.

Cold last weekend with a bit of snow Sunday night, rained this weekend so everyone is covered in mud. Temps during the day 60-70's, so nice riding weather. Spent another hour trying to get Cisco halfway clean, including a horsey sponge bath on the worst parts, then a quick ride. Too cold to bathe! Looking forward to a clinic tomorrow.

Thanks so much for the info. I spent a while last night looking around the internet for horse sized herbs. I only found one dealer for liquorice. I also found "Freeway", which has, among other things, liquorice, aniseed, and thyme. Even though its premixed, thought I might try that as a start. His main symptom is a flaired nose and difficulty breathing, not so much a runny nose or even much of a cough, so I'm thinking the antiinflammatory stuff might help him. Again, thanks so much for the tips.
Have you had snow yet? A lot of places in the northern US are getting it. Hope you're doing well and have a great weekend.

Wow, I had no idea there was that much available. Thanks for the info-I'll have to get busy researching. Where do you get all that in horse-sized quantities?

It sounds like Dino and BJ suffer from roughly the same thing. "Heaves" is the old (and maybe American?) term for breathing trouble due to allergies. Which herbs do you use? I've been giving BJ a store-bought mixture of honey, lemon, and menthol before I ride him. Sometimes it seems to help and sometimes it doesn't.
We are having the odd day of unseasonably cold weather, how about you? My horses are pretty fluffy too, but about usual.
Allie is doing well with saddling and groundwork. She's still a shrimp-just a hair under 14 hands- but I plan on starting her this summer. I'll keep the rides easy and short, but I really want to begin riding her before this stiff achey body of mine gets much older, lol.
Hope you're term is going well at uni. Take care.

PMU Horses
Premarin is a pill to replace women's estrogen. They discovered years ago that Pregnant Mare Urine can be used to make a pill to help with a women going through the change of life. Since large horses like draft produce more urine there are farms that dedicate their lives to keeping draft horses pregnant so they can collect the urine. The so called "By Product" of this practice are of course FOALS. These foals are sold to Canada and over seas to be used as meat for human consumption. It has always been my dream to start a rescue for these poor babies.

so glad to hear from you and that the horses are doing well and are fluffy and ready for winter, complete with shelter. so, they're extra fluffy? we actually had a small snow on Nov 1, which is the earliest snowfall recorded in my state ever (i live in the southern US, so we are fairly warm compared to most people).
my horses are doing well, except for BJ, who has developed heaves (aka: allergies) and has difficulty breathing, especially when it's warm. im still in the researching stage, so not sure how im going to treat him, but it breaks my heart- he's the best horse ive ever owned and i had hopes and dreams for him. allie is coming along well. she'll be a 2 year old in the spring, so i guess i'll train her in the summer, when i have a lot of heat helping to take the youthfull friskies out, haha.
yeah, uni can totally monopolize your time. but it's worth it and doesnt last forever (praise the good Lord on high!!!).
hope you're having a good weekend, and write when you can.

Things have settled down and I have 2 weeks where I only work one day each. Yay! BJs breathing is easier now that its cooler, so I've been able to ride him some, and he's such a joy. I've had the heavy roping saddle on allie to expose her to the weight and a flank strap, and she did great. My niece has even been lying across her back with no problem. But don't worry, she won't be ridden yet. Though its hard to wait.
How's Dee doing? Is he staying healthy with the season changes? Are you being able to ride any? How's school going? How's the pony?
Just checking in. Take care.

Thanks for the kind words for BJ. Apparently, heaves are essentially asthma caused by allergies. His breathing is uncomfortable enough that he won't get above a real slow trot.

Hi. How are things going? Have classes started again? Have you been able to ride much? Is it still hot?
The final golden days of summer are so pretty, but also still pretty hot. Doing a lot of groundwork with Allie, and she's doing well. BJ has had several colds this summer and isn't breathing quite right, so I have the vet coming out Monday. He's also going to give the strangles vaccines and draw coggins tests. Its almost time to give everybody their other fall vaccines too.
Hope you have a great weekend.

I've been busy and haven't had much horse time, but did ride Gracie for 2 hrs Thur and REALLY enjoyed it. Groundwork with Allie yesterday and finished by lying over her back with her standing next to the mounting block. It was the first time she's held most of my weight and it didn't seem to bother her.

Everet Shaw, who rode his share of great steer roping horses, told Hyde
that Blue was the best horse at Cheyenne that year. Hyde and Del both felt
that Blue started out of the box quicker and could catch cattle easier than
any horse they had ridden. The combination of Blue's athletic ability and
Del's training made him hard to beat. ~Thanks for voting~ **Copper**

Sorry I haven't been in touch. Been very busy around here (getting a new roof on the house, trying to put up an above ground pool for my daughter, taking my almost blind sister in law on errands on top of my own errands, working extra hours, farm chores, etc) and the internet was lost a couple of times last week. Very tired and not much horse time.
I think its funny that big riding horses are so scared of everything and little bitty ponies are scared of hardly anything. Hopefully, as you're able to ride Dee more now he has a saddle, he'll get more confident and less spooky. That's good he doesn't spook violently.
Well, hope the rest of your week goes well. Take care.

This program
produced the stallion Gooseberry, Crow Creek (Lory's top calf horse), and
many good mares. Hyde and Dede then bought the other half interest in Blue
Valentine from Del. Hyde felt like it was a great privilege to rope steers
on Blue. In 1970 Hyde roped at his last Cheyenne Frontier Days on Blue. ~Thanks for voting~ **Copper**

I am gonna start telling you a story of a Quarter horse named "Blue Valentine."

It all began in 1880 when my grand father , Vince Hayes, trailed a herd of good mares from FT. Riley, Nevada to Thermopolis, Wyoming. His two sons Buster and Laurie, continued the tradition of raising and riding top horses and sought ways to improve them. ~Thanks for voting~ **Copper**

Charlie says "unfortunately my new mom (Lahle) lost her own horse, just after I arrived at Far West Farms. She was absolutely devastated. Far west's kind barn manager knew how sad she was and let her take me on as a project since she really did not want anything to do with horses anymore and I did not want anything to do with people. We were a perfect match and bonded quickly, and before long, Far West made it possible for us to be together forever."

He was so starved he could only have hay and in carefully measured amounts and Charlie was not allowed to have any treats. When a horse is that starved uncontrolled refeeding can lead to terrible medical problems such as colic, laminitis kidney failure, and even death. As tempting as it is to just start throwing food at a starving horse, I would learn it is an art and should involve a vet or someone who has experience with refeeding.
