produced the stallion Gooseberry, Crow Creek (Lory's top calf horse), and
many good mares. Hyde and Dede then bought the other half interest in Blue
Valentine from Del. Hyde felt like it was a great privilege to rope steers
on Blue. In 1970 Hyde roped at his last Cheyenne Frontier Days on Blue. ~Thanks for voting~ **Copper**

I am gonna start telling you a story of a Quarter horse named "Blue Valentine."

It all began in 1880 when my grand father , Vince Hayes, trailed a herd of good mares from FT. Riley, Nevada to Thermopolis, Wyoming. His two sons Buster and Laurie, continued the tradition of raising and riding top horses and sought ways to improve them. ~Thanks for voting~ **Copper**

I hope y'all enjoyed the story of "Charlie."

Charlie 8 months after being rescued

How could anyone throw away much less abuse such a sweet kind intelligent horse? I no longer ride Charlie and Charlie is no longer ridden, but it would be painful to him and I figure he has been through enough already. And so I retired him and now he is my BFF and big red dog. ~Thanks for voting~ **Copper**

Charlie says "unfortunately my new mom (Lahle) lost her own horse, just after I arrived at Far West Farms. She was absolutely devastated. Far west's kind barn manager knew how sad she was and let her take me on as a project since she really did not want anything to do with horses anymore and I did not want anything to do with people. We were a perfect match and bonded quickly, and before long, Far West made it possible for us to be together forever."

He was so starved he could only have hay and in carefully measured amounts and Charlie was not allowed to have any treats. When a horse is that starved uncontrolled refeeding can lead to terrible medical problems such as colic, laminitis kidney failure, and even death. As tempting as it is to just start throwing food at a starving horse, I would learn it is an art and should involve a vet or someone who has experience with refeeding.

Hi... Rode Darbs Thursday morning, in English. He threw a little attitude at the lope but i rode him through it. Then he was great, it was a little freaky when he decided to do a little buck. However, it's been really hot and humid here, not fun to be outside what so ever. Monday i am planning to ride again, i just cant wait for cold to arrive. Hope ya'll have had nice weather and a good Saturday. Leaving a afternoon vote, i will try and get on again Tuesday and tell about our ride. Thanks your votes!

A facebook donor sent a donation for Charlie's bail. [God bless you Amber Reed and anyone else who also helped raise Charlie's bail.] Rescue day 2-September 2,2012: A kind woman, a local trained, took Charlie. I think she may have even contributed yo, or paid the rest of his bail. But she was the one who took responsibiity for him and saw that he got immediate veterinary treatment. The trainer had a friend another trainer who was looking for a school horse and she saw how sweet Charlie was and had high hopes that with proper care he could be a strong, healthy, horse again.

Love your new profile pic. You and Dee look so good together. I'm so glad you're enjoying him and the new saddle.
I've never had a rescue or abused horse. When you say Dee isn't confident, do you mean he spooks easily? Maybe you could set up some simple obstacles, like yard chairs and logs on the ground to back through, circle, cross over, etc. First on the ground, then riding. As you send him over and around and between, he will learn to trust and respect you as his leader. Plus, its fun. If he resists leaving home, you could work him at home, go a little way out into the pasture and rest. Repeat the process until you can get further and further out in the field.
None of these ideas are mine. I got them from clinicians. There are a lot of them on TV and the computer and they are very helpful. I like Clinton Anderson of Downunder Horsemanship because he's very step by step and easy to follow and has a great website to access any time, but a lot of clinicians are similar in their approach. Or if you could find a good trainer to work with. Its fun to learn and watch your horse progress. I wish you good luck and a happy Thurs.

On September 1,2012 Charlie was sent to an auction in Ontario, CA. Volunteers from auction Horses rescue were there, as they always are, when new horses come in. They saw Charlie among the sick, aging, injured and young untrained horses in the lot awaiting their fate and posted pictures on their Facebook page.

And that is where Charlie's rescue story begins...

Yay! So glad the saddle fits and you and Dee like it. Are you able to ride more now? Post a pic or two-would love to see it. How're your friend's lessons coming? Sounds fun.
We are fine. My babies are doing well. I've been on vacation this past week, so have done groundwork and/or tiding almost every day and have really enjoyed that. Back to work today.
Have been busy trying to put up an above ground pool for my daughter. What a job!!! It has to be exactly level or the pressure from the water on the wall could break it, and we live on brick (hard packed red clay). So, we chip and dig, measure, chip and dig, measure, etc. I have a new appreciation for all things level, haha. Don't know if we'll ever get it up or if it'll be right. OK, enough of that.
Well, hope your week is starting off well. Take care.

If you ever see horses or ponies at a summer rental barn, fair, zoo, or cardinal etc. that are thin sick or injured - report it them. Don't accept excuses like "he's just old." The reality is , some business buy up old, sick horses because they are gentle use them up over the summer then send them back to auction, they pay little for them and get money back. When they are resold and just make as much money off them as possible over the summer. These horses are underfed, receive little or no medical care or ever see a farrier. No horse deserves that kind of treatment and exploitation.

I am gonna start telling you about a rescue Quarter horse named Charlie.

Charlie had been used the summer of 2012 by a rental barn in Burbank, CA. Even little kids could ride him because he was so docile. I can tell you, however, now that i know Charlie and saw him in the state he was being ridden, he was so compliant because he was weak and scared to death. The reason he did not buck little kids off was because he barely had the strength to walk by the end of summer. And he was in more than a little pain. His front shoes were old and his hooves were overgrown. He was unshod on the back, and he had suffered a leg injury that cracked his hoof from the tip all the way to the coronet that needed work.

Yea! New saddle Monday is coming up. We've been so dry our grass is crunchy brown, but....ITS RAINING TODAY! Yea! A good hard steady rain. The horses are all doing fine. Even with the dry summer, I have to keep BJ and Gracie and the mini in a dry lot most of the day. They just get too fat so easily. Post some pics of your new saddle when it arrives. And yes, seems that penniless is how most of us horse people stay, thanks to said horses, haha. Take care.

Hi. Good to hear from you. Congrats on getting a custom saddle ordered. An Aussie stock saddle sounds perfect. You'll have to post a pic of Dee wearing it when it arrives. Glad you're getting to ride some this summer. I rode trails bareback as a kid but there's no way I'd do it now either. And yes, you have a looooong way to fall.
Its been hot here. The thermometer says 80's-low 90's F,which is about 10 degrees cooler than normal July weather, but for some reason, it feels like the sun is burning closer than usual. Just feels HOT. We haven't had much rain in the last couple of months, so our grass has stopped growing and it's crunchy.
I too am not riding as much as I'd like. Not sure why, the summer schedule has just been busy. BJ isn't doing so well in the heat this summer-seems like he overheats easily. Allie is growing and looking more like a horse. She's still short but she's getting a bit wider and more bone. Still a pest though, haha. She's the nosiest, most curious horse I've ever met. Always in the way and into something. And tons of energy. Hope she's quieter by the time its time to train her. She can jump like a deer, just high and effortlessly, so that may be in her future.
Well, glad you're doing well. Have a good weekend.
PS: the pony is a cute little guy too.

A friend has a mare with a broad flat back and she can't find a saddle that doesn't leave bumps on her back, so she rides bareback too. Can you make a nice bareback pad for him? That would be fun. Rode Darbs bareback yesterday, just a trail ride. He did good, plan on riding saddle today.

A genetic test was made available to horse breeders in 1992, and can id affected horses with virtual certainty. The simple blood test is available at the University of California at Davis School of Veterinary Medicine , Department of Medicine, or through the AQHA. Breeders were pressurised to show that Impressive bred horses were negative for HYPP,or to remove them from breeding. The lucky ones protect their investments by advertising their negative test results along with their stud services and sales. At the AQHA 2004 convention a motion was passed to set January 1st 2007 as the date after which foals testing homozygous for HYPP would no longer be registrable, with mandatory testing for HYPP for the descendants of Impressive. The Appaloosa Association followed suit and will disallow the registry of homozygous foals from January 1st 2008. The American Palomino registries have gone all the way and passes rulings against both homozygous and heterozygous HYPP horses, also beginning on January 1st 2007. Part and half-blood registries need to follow suit and pass rulings on both testing and registration . If enough pressure is brought to bear it might eventually be possible to eliminate this awful disease from the horse population , so that Impressive may be remembered forhis impressive legacy rather than his infamous one. Thay's the end of Impressive's story, hope everyone enjoyed reading it. Tommorrow i am going to share about my and Darby's goal.... Thanks for all the support so far!

Impressive returned to the halter ring, winning 31 blue ribbons out of 31 attempts. Then in 1974, at age 6, he became the first World Champion Open aged halter stallion, with 48 halter points. Brown was offered 300,000 for him but refused the offer, saying "ain't no body in this world got enough money to buy him." Impressive was in demand as a sire, popular for his muscular and refined form. His stud fee was $25,000, he fathered about 2250 foals, including noble tradition, a four-time World Champion Halter stallion and a highly successful stud as-well. The Story of Impressive: Impressive was a chestnut Appendix Qh colt. He was born on April 15 1968.He had royal Thoroughbred breeding on both sides of hi pedigree. He was set to become one of the most famous & successful quarter horses in history. Impressive had many owners, his price rising at each new sale. Dean Landers bought him for 20,000 at the Indiana state fair. He used him for a shoe horse for a few months. After owning Impressive for just 3 months Dean Landers sold him to Fennel Brown for 40,000. Fennel uses Impressive as a race horse. Unfortunately he was soon excluded from racing and other and other performance disciplines due to pedal osteitis. More Tommorrow, Thanks for all your support early in the month, Have a blessed day.

First i'm going to tell a little about the Appendix Quarter horse breed.

The Appendix Quarter Horse is a first generation cross between a registered Thoroughbred and an American Quarter Horse. There register a Appendix but not initially eligible for the full registration. The cross began it in Texas and quickly took place when the horse racing industry brought the Thoroughbred bloodlines into the Quarter Horse Association. Initially they were met with resistance by board members, but they relented to cross with the Thoroughbreds that that held the Quarter Horse type characteristies as long as they were registered seperately. Through the years and selective breeding the resulting cross is a larger, quicker animal with more refind features. Thanks for your support so far! More tomorrow...
