How We Met

My instructor rescued Rosie from a slaughterhouse; and with a bid of $500, Rosie finally had a ray of hope for the future. When I first saw her, my jaw dropped. She was so thin that every bone and every rib jutted out of her body; her skin clung to her bones; I had never seen a horse's fur so dull in my life and some was even ripped from the skin in some places; her hooves were so painfully cracked and ruined that it was hard to believe she could even manage to walk on them; and to top it off she had a huge lump on her forehead from some injury or infection from her previous owners. I was horrified to see that a horse could be treated so badly. Little by little, Rosie was restored to full health with everyone's efforts at the barn. Looking at her today, you would never guess in a million years that she had been in a terrible condition; her stomach is full and her structure is filled out, her fur is sleek and shiny and in fact is a completely brighter shade than how she first arrived and it is all grown out, her hooves are in excellent condition and no longer have cracks in them, and the lump on her forehead is completely healed; not to mention that she is the sweetest horse at the entire barn, if you ask me. Rosie's previous owners neglected her and left her to starve to death- it's so hard to believe someone could just throw her away. Once Rosie was restored to full heath, she was given to me as a project horse to work with. The term "project horse" seems way too blunt to explain what she really is to me. Though I do not own her, I take responsibility for her and have spent a lot of time bonding with her and working with her. I have come to love this horse- actually from the moment I saw her, when she was standing in her pen in her poorest condition, my heart fell in love with her. Rosie has come a long way, and I am so proud of her every achievement. She really is an amazing horse. For now, we are doing a lot of ground work and trust exercises. Even though she doesn't always get it at first, I know that she really tries hard for me and her heart is in it. Our bond is getting stronger every day, and the most amazing feeling is seeing how far she's come, and being able to see her learn and improve, and us growing together as a team.

Between you and me, I think Rosie has taught me more than I could ever teach her.

Impressive returned to the halter ring, winning 31 blue ribbons out of 31 attempts. Then in 1974, at age 6, he became the first World Champion Open aged halter stallion, with 48 halter points. Brown was offered 300,000 for him but refused the offer, saying "ain't no body in this world got enough money to buy him." Impressive was in demand as a sire, popular for his muscular and refined form. His stud fee was $25,000, he fathered about 2250 foals, including noble tradition, a four-time World Champion Halter stallion and a highly successful stud as-well. The Story of Impressive: Impressive was a chestnut Appendix Qh colt. He was born on April 15 1968.He had royal Thoroughbred breeding on both sides of hi pedigree. He was set to become one of the most famous & successful quarter horses in history. Impressive had many owners, his price rising at each new sale. Dean Landers bought him for 20,000 at the Indiana state fair. He used him for a shoe horse for a few months. After owning Impressive for just 3 months Dean Landers sold him to Fennel Brown for 40,000. Fennel uses Impressive as a race horse. Unfortunately he was soon excluded from racing and other and other performance disciplines due to pedal osteitis. More Tommorrow, Thanks for all your support early in the month, Have a blessed day.

Glad to see she finally has a great home. I just got a third addition. She was an animal control rescue. 9 year old Tennessee walker mare. Got her Friday before memorial day and started riding her Sunday. Put her thru Clinton's exercises and she is picking up nicely. She is very nervous but the older man who had her beat her. She is seeing what it's like to be loved. Training her for trail then gotta find a great home for her. Dex is doing great too. He's like a 10 year old on the trail. Love that!!! Guess the long walks helped lol.

Frantic Friday, received word the clinic was a go. Had to get Cisco up, thorough bath, then grocery shopping, packing, and hauled out about 2PM (I always spend the night before with them). Cisco was an absolute gem at the clinic. He did almost everything perfectly. We had a little trouble with the canter exercises, but I hadn't cantered him since last fall, he did better than I thought he would and really, really tried. Also, he seems to have gotten over the horn bag phobia. Did try to phone vote Fri night, but couldn't get logged on. Cheryl & Cisco

I have been riding on the dirt paddock, but it is finally dry enough to head to the grass area, it is softer on his feet and it is a bigger area. Well here we are already, last day of May. I've enjoyed researching Paints and famous horses. Thank you so much for supporting Sierra, win or lose it was fun!

More on Smarty Jones:
As a 2-year-old, during a schooling session at the starting gate at Philadelphia Park in July in preparation for his first career start, Smarty Jones reared up and slammed his head on an unpadded iron bar, fracturing his skull and shattering his orbital (eye socket) bones. Trainer John Servis said at the time, "Oh my God, this horse just killed himself." The accident nearly caused him to lose his left eye. It seems ironic now that two of the other entrants in Saturday's Derby were lacking sight in one eye and Smarty Jones could have been the third.

After months of care at the New Jersey Equine Clinic, he finally made it back to Philadelphia on November 9, winning by 7 3/4 lengths in his debut. In his second start just two weeks later, he romped by 15 lengths. Servis said at the time to Chapman, "This is a nice horse. This horse could go somewhere." Chapman said, "John, only thing I want to go to, a horse like this I want to go to the Derby."

On a rainy May 1, 2004, Smarty Jones became the first unbeaten Kentucky Derby winner since Seattle Slew in 1977. Servis and Elliott became the first trainer/jockey combination in 25 years to win the Kentucky Derby in their debut appearance. Smarty Jones won the race by 2¾ lengths, earning $854,800 for the Chapmans along with a bonus of $5 million from Oaklawn Park for sweeping the Rebel Stakes, the Arkansas Derby, and the Kentucky Derby. He also joined Lil E. Tee (1992 Derby winner) as the only Pennsylvania-bred horses to ever win the Kentucky Derby. Smarty Jones' year, 2004, was the 100th anniversary of the Triple Crown races.
