How We Met

The story is somewhat extensive, but long story short:
Heard about this mini horse that someone didn't want because he was getting to be just a pain to feed or anything. His name was WarHawk. The husband wanted to kill him if he couldn't get rid of him. His wife, of course didn't want this to happen. She was very thankful that we could bring him home to live with us. It was a surprise that we were going to look at a horse. No one told me till we arrived, what we were doing or that we were even looking at a horse. At the time, we only had 1 acre of property that our house sat on. Instantly, once I saw Eli, I knew I wanted this little horse that had "problems".
Unfortunately the stress from the move caused him to start cribbing. he already had the problem of nipping, because he was spoiled rotten by the wife. another unfortunate thing was that I got Eli when I was 9. At that time, I was practically a know it all, read every horse book, etc. but never knew what to do with Eli. I named him myself... "Eli" short for "Elijah", but I was afraid of this little horse. Him and his nipping, even though I was the only one he seemed to like. He never tried to bite me, but my family had me scared to death of Eli and his nipping problem. Eli was a pasture ornament for 5 years. It is now nearing the 7th year Eli has been with us and now that I'm older, I'm not scared of Eli (probably because I am bigger than him) and I've come to understand him, and I think he trusts me. This year I have big plans for him. the past year or so I've been slowly working with Eli and now we're doing some property enhancements to further Eli's training. I'm really excited to work with him more. I've felt terrible letting him sit in the pasture. Now I'm determined to make that boy my "little buddy" no matter what it takes!

The new photos of Eli
*scroll to bottom of page below comments* (from left to right):
FIRST: A more recent photo of Eli in front of Cinnamon. SECOND: another recent photo of Eli in his NEW, bigger pasture where he lives with Cinnamon.
THIRD: When we first got Eli and the barn wasn't quite finished. FOURTH photo: Eli napping in the sun FIFTH: cart ride (that was a long time ago!) SIXTH: Eli in his stall SEVENTH: dinner time!

**May 7th is my birthday** (if the birthday on his papers isn't fake, as well as his papers)

~NEWEST PICTURE~
In Eli's album is a picture of his "injury". Cinnamon kicked him and scraped his face up.

I guess I will never complain about the cold, when the heat is this bad. 10 o'clock and horses have all ran into the shed. We brought all the round bales in this morning, Mike brought them in, and I just help make sure he is getting them straight. So while he is doing that, I moved most of the baby chicks, now about 3 weeks old into the chicken coop, there is a separate little room in there, for feed, but feed never gets into it, so nice place for chicks. They have out grown their large rabbit cage. At least there is a window to open.
Baby guineas, (keets) are hatching now, I can hear them inside the incubator. Have another batch due next Saturday. Wanted to take them to the next swap on the 30th, but that is our family reunion, (Mike's side) this time near Minneapolis, about 3-4 hours away. Most people are staying over night, but we have no one to check on critters, so we will just go for a bit and come home. Stay cool, sorry I did not read any one's comments to me, so will try to catch up later on any news.

MaMa pig is fine. She gets up a lot more than what I remember our other sows, (from yrs ago) did, but I really think it was because the heat. The baby pigs are so cute and tiny compared to her, she is a good Mama. I see her push the babies into one spot with her nose, before she lays down. Her 350 pounds would surely, squash them.
I have my camera all ready. to take some first pictures of Mistit's foal. I just hope I figured out all the days right, by counting back 21 days from the first date that I was told she was bred. I still say she like her special treatment. Going to rain today. Yesterday, we moved the fence next to the woods getting ready to cut the hay field. Our son worked up a small deer plot, and we planted that with sugar beets. Moved little chicks out out to the shed into large rabbit cages and kept the baby keets in, well, until they get bigger.

Hoping I could read some tips on the ear issues. I still have some with Pickles, and each time he has his head down for grain, I rub the base of his ears or when haltered, I will rub right where it itches him.

Have to go to our little town 4th of July celebration in a bit, so sending fast vote. The Banker is a vet, and marching in the parade. Last night they picked up cross from the cemetery, put there for Memorial Day. Rode Willow again last night, and a bit in the morning. I mean just walking around the pen a few times. Her leg does not bother her, unless running, I see her lunge herself, when I come out with a rope, Stephanie said it was because she did not like her leg treated. So, I go out with the halter and rope, "ump-teen" times a day, and when she comes to me, I give her a tiny treat, then pet her and tell her she is a good girl. She needs time to get use to be with me, because she was in with 17 other horses, and it seems they were not too kind to her. She is a bit thin, "compared" to Whisper or the other ponies. In a week or so, I will see if Stephanie can send me what her vet said about Willow.

I am also tired of Mistit, keeping her baby to herself. I have read up on all the signs, some I see, like the "A" shaped looking down at her belly, it is pulling downwards, to look like a pear, her muscles near her hips are not soft yet, now does she like me to move he tail straight upward....it should be loose feeling. Her bag does not seem hard enough yet, although, some horses do not bag up with milk until the last minute or second. I am going by what cows do, and what I have read. Not experience. I am tired because I check her at around 11-12 each night, get up in the middle of the night to go out there, then early morning, and by it is time to "really" get up, I sure can sleep good. :)

Sorry, I did not get to finish voting yesterday morning. It seems like always one more job. Then my son brought my grandson, Dominic down, who is 12, and always hungry. So I started making him breakfast, of fried potatoes and bacon. We went to brush the rabbits, and still working on Auroa's tangles....have to cut her fur down to the skin, since she is a long haired bunny and this spring got into cockburrs, and her whole body was one big mess. It is very sloooooooooooooooow work, 1/4 inch snips at a time. I think I found her tail. :)

Many, many "moons" ago, when my hubby drank beer, he went out and came home with 7 goats...a story he never lives down. hee hee. Well, he gets gout from beer, so does not drink anymore, but he sure remembers those goats. They were not nice goats at all, no matter how high we made the pen, they would get out. Finally, after 3 years, sold all the babies to one guy, traded 4 goats for a 2 calves, Nixon and Nero, and traded all the rest for hay, so we did OK, but I did say, I would never want another goat, but Blizzard and Zero were nice, just did not fit in with pones that were afraid of them. It was hard at feeding time, because they wanted everything, they would run from chicken pens, to the pigs, to each horse pan, or where ever I heard me with the bucket. It was fun, another lesson learned, the hard way...again.

Sold my 2 goats yesterday, I think it was the right choice. It was getting harder to keep them away from chicken corn, and they would follow me around while doing chores....I think it was just to watch me, to know where I put all that corn. I found them in the chicken coop eating their feed, and even when I hid the guinea's feed pan in the dog house in their pen, they found it. But now they will be a little girl's birthday present. Hubby is still grinning ear to ear....:). If only the Pickles and Paisley were not so afraid of them. I was more afraid that the two goats would get hurt from one of the minis. No baby yet.....I think Mistit changed her mind.

Yes, we had light frost yesterday morning. We have had frost in nearly ever month, once on the 4th of July, we had to leave the park early to go cover the garden, and sit with blankets on us, as we watched the local parade. No, baby yet. A week ago, the vet said it would be at least a week to 10 days yet. The former owner, was so positive on her breeding dates. It was in July, that Mistit hurt her stifle joint. She does not seem uncomfortable, but sometimes I see her tail switching back and forth, or looking at her belly. Yesterday, she was rolling a few times. Pickles, now is a different story. He did not seem sore after the second or third day. But, he is back to being "catch me if you can" attitude. Today, I put him in the pen, and lead him back and forth to the pasture, of course he wants to run, but I zig zag back and forth, to make him slow down, but then here comes the goats, under the fence, running straight to us, and Pickles took off. Well, another bad habit I just taught him.

The mini flood in the living room was caused by the hubby, who was playing weatherman, again. Sure hope he does not take it up as a living. Same guy, who said was not going to freeze last night. Good thing I covered tomato plants, there was frost this morning, frost but no baby.
Ponies staying in at night so they can lay where it is dry and warm, sure is making a messy in the back of shed. This morning, "someone" decided to empty the barrel of empty feed bags, pull down another bale of hay, tip over water buckets, and I am sure they tried to let the rooster out of the rabbit hutch.

Hi. Good to have you back. So sorry you lost so many points. How have things been? How are the borses? How's your summer going?
We are fine. We aren't getting nearly the rain much of the country is getting, the storms kinda cut the corner down here and just miss us. I've been working with Allie. She threw my niece off back in April and I was worried about her trying that again, so I've backed up and just been walking and working on steering and stopping. After 2 months of that, she's FINALLY getting softer and more relaxed. Will have to see how she handles the faster gaits when the time comes. BJ gets the summers off because his heaves make it hard for him to breathe, so I ride Gracie some too.
Well, hope to see you around. Take care.

ood Morning vote from Whisper and the little herd. Bad start to the whole week...toilet is not working....:) Yep, I made just a few dollars over 100 on my chicks. I like to dicker on selling them. Told one lady I would trade her all my baby chicks, for her little baby and even throw in a bar of homemade soap. Her little girls were shaking their heads "No" and the little boys were all smiles saying "Yes". I came home with 3 little "toy" mice for my kittens to place with.

I nearly came home with a kitten or two. Told the guy if he could not find homes for them, I would take them. Some chicks I liked, but they were banty size, and it takes the same amount of feed to feed the banty hens, as a big one. But I had a good time, that's what is important. Took one of my helmets, to give to one of the 4-Her, since this was a 4-H fund raiser.

A "late" Happy Mother's Day to you, even if you are only the mother of 4 legged ones.
Busy weekend....hatched out 42 out of 48 eggs, for me that is great. Sold 8 guinea hens on Saturday and 15 chicks, but out poor outdoor stove is taking all that money to fit it. Now the best new, Pickles finally progress to a point that he can have his halter OFF. Does not run away, and no long afraid of hand movements....sometimes, he moves his head, but not his feet. Been following me around, like I am his best friend. Negative side of no halter, is....I can not tell Pickles and Clippers apart(from just their heads), without looking at their feet. :)

Hubby was gone yesterday, drove with a friend to the VA in Minneapolis, so I never had even 1 dirty dish to wash until he got home. Got so much work done. Emptied, (again 3rd time) rain water out of the sunk in bath tub, that is used for the summer fish pond, used water to give to all the newly planted trees, so some of the water carrying was a bit of a hike. After filling the horse tanks, pulled the hose over to the fish pond and filled it, of course first had to clean it, because of all the leaves and sticks that fall in. Went and caught all 7 little gold fish, by hand, and put them in. I try to make it as natural as possible. With rocks and later plants....the rocks are so "if" some little animal falls in, at least it can climb out on the rocks. Put turtles back in the pen, and added more rocks so it is easier for them to crawl out, that plastic does not give them any traction. Dragged the hose over and made muddle puddles for the pigs, then watered all the tomatoes plants, all 22 of them. Still have more to put out, but they are still to small. I carry them outside to set in the sun, and then back in for the night. Baby chicks got to go out in the sunshine in the outdoor pen, but sure were hard to round up to go back inside at 6, All the tomatoe plants, have to be uncovered in the morning, then recovered when it started getting hot, yep, it really got hot yesterday, up to 83 at one time. We go from 30 to 89+ in one day. Winter jacket to T-shirt. Cleaned out white guinea pen, brushed ponies, worked on picking up Pickles feet....he was very naughty when farrier was here...picked up his feet and his whole bod went with. But Clippers did the same thing, and his feet were picked up hundreds of time. Moved saddles to the shop so I could clean them later, took the huge plastic that covered them, out into the ponies pen, and used feed tanks and rocks,to hold down corners and then put its of feed on the plastic so the ponies could learn to walk on the plastic. Sure enough, girls are braver than boys. Paisley, and Mistic just walked right out, Pickles and Clippers had to check it out somewhat, before they went for treats. I brought the two huge balls out for them to play with, they like to follow them as they roll. Pickles and Paisley had them in their pen all winter. Later when it was dark, I went to lock chickens in, and all 3 of the younger ponies were laying down, so I sat between them, and rubbed them. Pickles just laid out flat and I got to rub his tummy, first time he did that. Usually he wants to get up, but tonight he felt comfortable just laying there. Did I clean house, well I did wash one load of clothes and hung them outside. That counts, somewhat, for housework, right!!

How is your week going?? Been planning on brushing everyone up to help with winter fuzzy wuzzy being gone, but just never have much time. Farrier is coming on Thursday the 5th, so want to have it done. Have to put a new door with hinges on one small chicken coop, clean out the fish bath tub pond, had it emptied or nearly, when it rained for a few days, and now it is full again. I care the water to newly planted little trees, which I stole from our woods, work on a fencing for the 2mt old chicks, finish clicking the rabbits tangled fur, she is long haired, and I never finishing doing her. Hatching out another batch of baby chicks, the other 15 are leaving on Saturday along with 8-10 guinea hens, then the rest can start free roaming. The hens have been laying and collected 36 of them and have set them 2 days ago, then will add 12 pheasant eggs in 2 more days, and 3 days after that fill in with some chicken eggs, depending on space. Still air incubator and I need to turn the eggs at least 4-5 times a day. It will e nice to have enough money to of course buy more feed, and not have to take from a different fund, might even have enough to pay into the fund for farrier work and shots.

I will post the pictures of the two turtles on Kisses page if I find some time today. The water in the pond was super cold for them, and a shaded area. Pen is about 5ft tall, 6 w/8-10 feet long. I did replant the iris, added Stella O Day, and threw in some flower seeds. It already had hosas, Snow on the Mt, and another small ground cover plant, now all we need is warm weather so they can stay out in their new home. Temps were barely 40 when I came in from feeding.
Pickles is really starting to get better, let me walk him all the way to the pasture today, even if everyone else had run ahead of him, near the gate, he started to get antsy, so I walked him the other way, and then back to the gate. He is still so fuzzy with baby fur.

Was busy digging a hole to put in the plastic pond for the turtles, have to be near a plug in, so that means next to the house. Hubby, finished digging it this morning. Have a long cage big enough to walk in, to put over the top and still have aout 5-6 feet so they can crawl out of the water. I sure hope my flowers and plants grow like I picture them in my mind. We had snow/sleet/rain from last evening to this morning. So spring must be hiding again.

More rain today, like 5th day in a row. The temps are cool too, so outside work is like the rain....hit and miss. Rest of the week should be cool without too much rain. Been planting tomatoes in paper cups, for the garden. I do have about 20 tomatoes plants up about 6-8 inches, but these were a different kind. As long as it is raining, we will go for feed today, if we can get the topper back on the truck.

Quick voting this morning before I do chores Can hear the birds singing outside, and little chicks starting to peep in the incubator. Going to start putting in the pond for the turtles today, needs electric for the filters so thinking next to the house or even in the day lillys over by the garage, even have the large cage to put over the top of everything, to keep them safe. Want to dig now while the ground is soft, since it has rained the last two days. Ponies seem to like to stay inside again, before they kept walking to the door like they wanted out, but that means more pen cleaning. Been trying to keep it clean, so all I had to do was put down lime, to kill anything in the soil, (it has dirt floor), then the sawdust, and straw, before Mistic has to use it for her baby. She other wise will be outside all day, and come in at night. So much for a quick vote, huh. :)
