How We Met

The story is somewhat extensive, but long story short:
Heard about this mini horse that someone didn't want because he was getting to be just a pain to feed or anything. His name was WarHawk. The husband wanted to kill him if he couldn't get rid of him. His wife, of course didn't want this to happen. She was very thankful that we could bring him home to live with us. It was a surprise that we were going to look at a horse. No one told me till we arrived, what we were doing or that we were even looking at a horse. At the time, we only had 1 acre of property that our house sat on. Instantly, once I saw Eli, I knew I wanted this little horse that had "problems".
Unfortunately the stress from the move caused him to start cribbing. he already had the problem of nipping, because he was spoiled rotten by the wife. another unfortunate thing was that I got Eli when I was 9. At that time, I was practically a know it all, read every horse book, etc. but never knew what to do with Eli. I named him myself... "Eli" short for "Elijah", but I was afraid of this little horse. Him and his nipping, even though I was the only one he seemed to like. He never tried to bite me, but my family had me scared to death of Eli and his nipping problem. Eli was a pasture ornament for 5 years. It is now nearing the 7th year Eli has been with us and now that I'm older, I'm not scared of Eli (probably because I am bigger than him) and I've come to understand him, and I think he trusts me. This year I have big plans for him. the past year or so I've been slowly working with Eli and now we're doing some property enhancements to further Eli's training. I'm really excited to work with him more. I've felt terrible letting him sit in the pasture. Now I'm determined to make that boy my "little buddy" no matter what it takes!

The new photos of Eli
*scroll to bottom of page below comments* (from left to right):
FIRST: A more recent photo of Eli in front of Cinnamon. SECOND: another recent photo of Eli in his NEW, bigger pasture where he lives with Cinnamon.
THIRD: When we first got Eli and the barn wasn't quite finished. FOURTH photo: Eli napping in the sun FIFTH: cart ride (that was a long time ago!) SIXTH: Eli in his stall SEVENTH: dinner time!

**May 7th is my birthday** (if the birthday on his papers isn't fake, as well as his papers)

In Eli's album is a picture of his "injury". Cinnamon kicked him and scraped his face up.

Hope your Thanksgiving was great!!
Mother Nature must have out did herself today. It hit 54, all most T-shirt weather. I took advantage of it too.
Moved Lilly over to Jennifer's barn with the rest of the calves, had no problems loading her, but she jumped down off the trailer and then limped for a long time. She sure wanted to investigate all the pasture. We did lock her in with them and later went back to check on her. There she will beable to get outside and also inside if weather is bad. Because once we line the back door with haybales, it will be closed for the winter. The bottom lets too much cold air into the back of our shed. While Mike, Dominic and his Dad, Joe, cut up the vension, I cleaned the shop out. Took little guineas out and now have them in the coop...separate little room, if or when it gets cold, I have a heat lamp ready. So had to clean out their water tank which was their home. Next cleaned out 2 rabbit cages, and moved them in the back of the shed. Without Lilly, I can make hay houses around the cages. Swept and moved things around so now there is lots of room. Most of it is boards, that just needed to go back where they belong. Such a beautiful day, hope tomorrow is the same, but I think today was a rare thing.

To you and your herd mates.
I hope everyone had something....more than one be thankful for. We certainly do have a lot of blessing.
Mother Nature, "finally" decided to play nice. Sunshine and warm, well, seen 37 this afternoon, and not wind.
Dinner went great, Mike peeled potatoes, turkey was done right on time 11, so it had time to stand for a bit before everyone started coming around 11:30. Dominic helped set table and put out pickles, napkins, cheese, raw veggies and dip, but he forgot the coleslaw. 2 could not make it, so Jennifer took food home to them, and enough for her and Mike for tomorrow. Still have plenty of leftovers. Total of 10, Joe brought an old guy whose land he hunts on. My Dad uses to play horseshoes with him on a league.
While Mike took his 2 o'clock nap early, I let out chickens, Lilly and guinea hens went out earlier, and so did the horses. Worked in the chicken coop, put down another bag of woodchips, and changed a few roost, set up a old pair of sawhorses, and put boards across. Hopefully, the young guinea hens will stop picking on a few chickens, if there is more room to roost. Tonight when they all came in, the hens were thanking me for not inviting them for dinner or to be dinner. :) I like my chicken and they normally die of old age. Happy who's going shopping tomorrow....not me said the "little red hen".

Another foggy rainy, damp, day temps are at least in the 30's, so not bad outside. Put down a huge bag (like the biggest black garage bag) of wood shavings in the outside pheasant pen, guineas decided to stay in the back of the barn with Lilly for the winter, but one gal needs a place for her geese and a few ducks, so I told her I had some room. It is a log cabin type of house with a large fence in area, with a fencing on top too.
Shipped 2 boxes of spare tack to a friends small tack shop in Texas, so hopefully, they get there in one piece. They are insured. Well, break time is over....thats Mike's lunch hour, and I have to get back outside to help water and dig out the rest of the carrots.....horses and rabbits will eat good for awhile.

I am sure this "winter Christmas look" with disappear and then reappear many many times before the real Christmas comes....perhaps we will have a brown Christmas. Today it was foggy nearly all day, even at 4 when I went out to make sure all the chickens and guineas were in, because so foggy I could not see out to the coop.
Went to get old hay bales from Mikey and Jennifer's barn. Brought them a bag of grain for the calves. The one I called Panada, sure is nice looking and big. Worked on getting heat up stairs today. When we installed a heat exchange about 2-3 yrs ago, we lost the prime for the upstairs, I think we may have figured it out.....we will see tomorrow. Pipes were getting warmer. If so, I will finally get a chance to clean and sort all the totes and boxes, usually it has been cold, so I just put a tote up there and never have time to put things where they belong. Lots of horse statues, and Christmas or seasonal things.

Today it was cloud, but warm at least ...if you call 23 warm, but had no wind. Mike put in 3 more round bales, it bothers me that we have started so early feeding hay. Usually at the end of Noverber, or 3rd week sometimes, but we started the 28th of October. Chickens, guinea hens, and Lilly got to go out, while we moved the one pen outside, and set up a pen for Lilly, at least now she will not be getting into the square hay bales. Never really got sunny out, but once in a great while, Mr. Sunshine would take a peak at us. We went and got more corn and also whole corn for the deer. The 18th starts deer hunting season, with rifles, it was bow season. I know it is still 10 degree below normal, but it does feel good outside. Put strings on the rest of the lid ornaments that Dominic had painted and hung them outside on small trees, still have more to paint, and decorate another little tree.

Hope you are sitting down, because we have sunshine...real sunshine and 33 degree, snow is melting off the roofs and I smell my banana bread so have to go check it.
Sun sure feels good, Thank You Mother Nature and Mr. Sunshine....I really did not mean it when I said you were a grouch.

Leaving love and a another quick vote. Still cold out, and snow on its way again. But the snow actually makes things warmer outside, acts as insulation. Got our square bales picked up and using them to line the north door in the shed, also some went to help out an old man for his water pipes/ and well. Unloaded 800 pounds of cracked corn for chickens, steers, and pigs, plus 300 of hog/pig into barrels so mice do not make holes in the sacks. on his well. Then went into the house and ate cookies... :)

I was impressive with Hobby Lobby, somewhat....but over whelming. So many choices. I had fun reading all the signs and posters. I was looking for chains to put some horse charms on for Christmas gifts. Found a cute little deer/buck ornament for Dominic, since he was the only one to get a buck this season. To do the work on Mikey's denture, would take 4 hours, so went to Farm and Fleet, and filled nearly all the animals Christmas list. Grizzly got canned cat food, Sadie wanted more treats and of course more dog food, Shadow got a soft bed, that I used coming home. Whisper, Willow and Mistit got more treats. Brought mineral blocks for cows and one for new Highlanders and Jack. Menards next stop and Mike got some things he wanted, and I brought fuzzy socks for any littler (teenagers) girls that I know....they will also get a necklace with horse charm. Picked up decks of kids card games, for any younger kids that stop here. See when Mikey was home, all his friends would come here, well, most of them have kids that came along, so now they stop to tell us Merry Christmas and I always have a little gift for kids and a box of homemade cookies and candies for them to take home. If I see them in a store, they always stop and chat and ask about the horses and reward....even if I never remember what their names are. They grow up so fast and change in looks.

Hi & a vote,
Well, we've reached the end of November, so it will be Rocky's last day as HOTM. He doesn't care, so long as he gets more carrots. As we head into December, we wish everyone will have happy December holidays. And a new HOTM will be arriving. Well, so long as HC keeps working!

Finally got on to HC, but now no time. So here is a vote and hug from my little herd.
Spent most of the morning getting bags and bags of nice dry sawdust/woodchips, not really sawdust. Then filling up the two pig houses with it. Everything and everywhere is mud and wet. Yesterday temps were in the 40's, and of course the snow melted, just like Frosty the snowman. So now all that is left is the puddle and mud. Then in the afternoon, went to get a few things from the grocery store, mostly milk....because some kitten and her friends plus Sadie and Shadow, expect milk at every meal.

Boy, what a difference one day makes. Yesterday morning did chores with sweatshirt, no hat, no gloves....then it rained, cold rain and temps dropped all day. Winds really picked up, after 6, buckets everywhere. Down to 24 this morning, and some snow, not even tracking snow. Very windy, but what a start to deer hunting season, usually we have enough snow at least a few inches, that do not melt, and winter was here to stay. Chickens and other birds stayed, inside. Only, because of the strong winds, they might start heading South otherwise. :) Heard some shooting this morning, and all the horses are staying close to the barn/shed. Since do not have that winterized, but it takes more than just Mike and me to do it. Want to use the bucket on the tractor, to push dirt up along the East side, and hang a tarp in the North doorway. There is a doorway on each side, which are at least 12 x 12, big enough for a tractor to drive threw and clean if needed. Soon we will put the Scottish Highlanders in with the other 2 steers, and Whisper and Willow, but everyone is still on pasture and a large round bale to eat.

Come visit me, Mistic, Willow & Whisper.

Our weather is so nice for November. But I know its coming...snow. Snow, I do not mind, but rain/snow mixture is hard to deal with. Everything is so wet then frozen. Mistit still wants to stand outside of the shed. Big enough for a whole herd inside, and I know Whisper always makes her move. I think for the winter she can go in with the calf, Jack, but Jack gets grain and she sure does not need it.
Get 150 bales of small bales of hay, so have to move the large chicken/guinea pen out, and clean where it was. Glad to get extra hay, it will help insulate the over head which slides sideweays.

Break from cutting firewood. Mike is going to help take a tractor back to the dealer to fix "something", on my brother in law's tractor. Some of charms came from ebay order. Smaller than what I thought, these are like a little "trojan horse", cute, but will need different size beads. So will go to our resale shop sort of like St. Vinny's or Goodwill, but prices are not too high, and check out what they have. Closes "bigger town" we have about 33 miles. Making a few to sell but most will go to the 4 H Christmas party for little gifts. Horses did not get their burrs out, yet. After hauling firewood and stacking, bringing in wash, and doing chores, we went to pick up Dominic from school, took him out to for a pizza at Subway, then gave him his cards. His golden birthday 14, and he is finally taller than me.

Calling for cold weather near the end of the week...highs in 30's, lows 20's, and of course snow. But the 19th is opening day of deer gun season, so it is expected. Some yrs we have had blizzard conditions, so this is really too warm for us, but so nice to get firewood in. Which is where we will be going in a bit.

Well. I think we got our "killing frost" last night. Ice on all the water, and heavy frost. Weather should warm up today. Mike's sister Barb will be buried today in Kennan. This is where she was born. Just a cemetery service, and a small luncheon at the local bar/restaurant. Our young bull is coming today. Scottish Highlander same as the heifer. Her name is Harriet, so his will be Harry. Horses are really in a frisky mood lately....must be the cooler weather. Or the deer and other critters moving around with hunting season(s).

That's cool that Eli is so well bred. I'm sure he and Sweetie will make some pretty babies. That'll be exciting. It's fun playing with and training a foal. That's good that you're already getting Titan halter broke. The sooner the better, huh? How are Eli's driving sessions going? You have enough training projects to keep you pretty busy, lol.
I'm finally off and home this weekend. Of course, I'm hoping to ride Allie. I'm tickled that she's coming along, finally. My little (hard-headed, sassy) pony. Hope you have a great weekend.

Hope everyone got to vote, I was either 84 or 85. Did not check to see who won yet. Our township, with the village, and another township, brought a voting machine, which seemed easy enough to use.
Weather here is still nice, but windy, I know it will not last. Funeral is planned for Saturday for Mike's oldest sister, so trying to get a few things cleaned up, just as fast as Sadie messes it up. She drags all her toys out, or brings sticks, and small pails, my coffee can feed dippers to either the back or front door. Still have a few more flower containers to bring in, I think I have all my gladiolus in, but have to dig up some others.

✞ wishing you all a wonderful Labor Day weekend. I will be off work Monday & Tuesday so working the weekend doesn’t seem too bad. We have had rain every evening this week except last evening so Cliff is going to get on the tractor and shred the pastures today. After work I will mow around the area’s left in the home paddock area and weed eat. I have had Deacon’s fly mask on him for 2 days now. The gnats are driving him nuts around his eyes and under his belly. I put swat under his belly to help and used fly spray too but the mask is doing the trick for his eyes. Hugs and a vote for all ✞
