How We Met

It was a long and painful story how we first came together. At the age of 14, my parents finally agreed to let me have my very own horse. Of course I was delighted, and had all the wonderful imagery of a gorgeous Palomino, buckskin, or some other amazing, and beautiful horse.

But when I first saw Red, in his small, cramped, muddy pen, I knew I had to have him. With caked mud all the way up to his knees, hooves cracked into a cloven cow hoof, empty beer cans littering his pen, and severely underweight, I couldn't leave him.

I begged and cried as my parents dragged me away from the poor horse, horrible images plagued my mind for the rest of the evening. Until my wonderful uncle came around, and ended up loading Red into a trailer, and brought him to our ranch.

I will never forget the look on his face as he first stumbled out of the stock trailer and just stared at all the vegetation he had to eat, and the wild pasture he had to move around in. My parents finally caved after seeing the horse so happy and we well overpaid what his blue book value was, in order to save him from his reckless, abusive owner.

We went through many hard times together, the recovery was long, and hard and Red wasn't rid-able for about 2 years. But once he gained his strength back, at his prime starting around 2008, he could run with the best of them. He was the toughest meanest horse around, even terrorizing the tough, big cowboys who tried to ride him. But he only accepted my small child frame onto his back and I remember the lovely evening riding down the side of the road with nothing but a halter, and a lot of trust.

Red has given me so many years of riding, and instruction, it is only fair he well earned his retirement as his bowed tendon started to impair his riding capability. Recently of last year (2013) he was retired from riding, and is living happily on our family ranch, well cared for, and loved by many. I still visit him often, and quietly reminisce the old days we both tore down the roads like Bonnie and Clyde.

He will forever be, my first and true love.
My child, my lover, my teacher, and my best friend.
