How We Met

I was buying Clippers, her son, and was offered Mistic, because she now a stifle joint injury, and Jeanne's husband is sick, and she did not have time to care for her correctly, since all her horses are together. I am glad she could come with Clippers, and soon I will buy her papers, and correct age and any information I am guessing at..

34 is quite warm for you. It's on the right side of 0, for sure. Glad you and your mom had fun shopping deals together. That's a good idea to buy discount candy canes for the horses, but yeah, it is hard to get the wrap off most of them. Can't do that with gloves on, lol.
Most of us leak a little at our valves, it would be nice if he didn't need surgery. The stop-leak sounds like a brilliant idea, lol.
When I went out to hay yesterday morning (snow on a chilly morning smells SO good!), little Sobe came bounding back up onto the porch as I was tying my boots and jumped on my hands (I had to start the tying over again, lol). It was like she was so excited by the snow on the ground and had run back up to tell me it had snowed. What did we humans ever do to deserve dogs? So darn cute. It got up to the low 40s I think and all the snow melted except for a bit on the north side of things. I didn't ride because of the mud, but I enjoyed being outside doing a few chores.

Mother nature can be as pretty and she can be nasty. Your reward for all she has put you through. Prayers for Mikey. Hopefully the surgery will solve the problem. Always nervous when it come to surgery. Making snow angels. What a great idea. My neighbors think I'm crazy any way. lol why not. Have fun with your family. Love when we all get together. Lost my mom 4 years ago. So our get togethers are not as much. She was the glue to keeping us together. We do see each other. Just not as much. Our temps dropped to 0 over the weekend. On Sunday, my nephew and his family took me out to meet their daughters new horse. Annabella. Then we went to visit the King (lol) My niece cleaned his stall for me. She is a sweetie. Only 10 and thinks of others. Jax was happy he got lots of treats. We got the 6" plus. Knew we would get it. Still better than the cold. The high teens seem like a heatwave. Saturday we are taking Sarah out to dinner for her birthday. I like that the barn gets together for the owner and her family. She and I are going to show Western Dressage this summer so I am going to give her a gift cert for a show shirt. Vicki & Big Jax

Hi Mistic, here's a vote for ya. That sounds pretty risky with the surgery then for Mickey! But yet he has to have it! Prayers! So why does Mike have to have his hearing aid checked every few months? I'm not familiar with this. Well let it snow, let it snow, let it snow! But lucky so far, since it started at 7 am this morning, and it's almost 12 hours, we've only got 2 inches so far! But they say the heavy snowfall will come overnight! New prediction is now 5 to 7 inches! Got the kids to the indoor and lunged Paige and did showmanship, then lunged Indy, and free lunged Bullseye. Got the wood burner going a few days now, feels great and I love the idea that I'm not using a ton of oil! Mo's up here in the house with us right now, but he's going back to the barn when I do pm feeding in a short while. He ran out when I went out with one of the kids and took off. Finally came back, but I was in the house and not going back out, so up the stairs he came and in the house! PS, got a text from Cheryl and Cisco, she'll be back on in a few days! YAY! Marion and the blondes.

So is Mike leaning more towards doing something now or letting "it" go? Is he having symptoms with the leaky valve?
Yep, they really do act totally different in the cold. I laugh about their brains freezing, but it may seriously have to do with predators being more hungry when the temps drop. Don't know how our domestic horses know that unless it's hardwired in the equine brain.
I managed to stay home all day yesterday, no errands, yay. It was pretty but very muddy, so the only horsey thing I did was trim Allie's hinds and get some nasty tangles out of her mane. Gotta work on Dee's and Cinni's today. There's nothing like rain and a little wind to tangle their manes literally overnight. The rest of the day was assorted chores.

Hi Mistic, here's a vote for ya. Yep mother nature is off her Prozac for sure! Glad that you're kinda able to walk on top of all that hard pack. Well it was an interesting day for sure! Went from a high of 62 yesterday to waking up to 26 this morning with a skip of ice and sleet/snow combo out there. But the winds were horrible, steady at 18 mph with gusts to almost 40 they were saying, and it sure felt like it! Temps dropped more throughout the day too! So it was not an indoor arena day at all. I didn't want to chance walking them out the door and have one freak out and slip on the now ice covered mud! So lunch time fresh water and hay, and they were very happy. My hay man came with another delivery of 50 bales. Probably need another 100 in the hay barn to make it till second cut Timothy in June. Love ya, Marion and the blondes.

Treats and petting will, fortunately, win over almost any animal. I think it's God's gift to humans so we can care for the animals we so love.
Glad you didn't get as much snow as they forecast.
They lay our tin roof over the shingle rooF we already had, so it has to rain really hard for us to be able to hear it, but it does sound good.
we got almost 2 inches of rain too and we weren't even hit with the heaviest of the storm. A lot of wind behind it and the temps dropped quickly from 60s to 31 this am. I had to get a new deicer for the water trough as the last one's plug came apart when I unplugged it, but it's a lifesaver when it's below freezing.
The coolest thing happened yesterday. My sister in law wanted me to pick up some lunch for her while I was out and about, and when I went in, I ran in to a friend I haven't seen in over 15 years! She has since divorced and remarried, has a horse again and likes to trail ride. So you know what we want to cook up. She says her mare is super easy going and loves trails, the perfect trail partner for my terrier-in-a-horse's-body, Allie. We had a lot of fun catching up.
Well, looks like the rain and snow have moved way north of almost everybody. Be careful in the ice, stay warm, and have a great saturday.

He does like his new blanket. he asked if it made his butt look big, told him he looked great lol I think he likes being King. :) Was so nice having the temps in the 50's. Looks like the freezing rain is starting. I was really hoping it would just snow. Did get some of the ice out of the driveway and off my porch roof. So that is good. How much ice did you get? Hoping we both fare well. I prefer snow over ice any time. How is the bunny doing? She should like the big pen. Vicki & Big Jax

Glad the bunnies are all present and accounted for. I bet they're cute. My daughter has wanted one for a long time, but we have too many animals as it is. I told her to play with and enjoy the animals we have. But I won't lie, I've always had a soft spot for guinea pigs and rabbits.
How did Mikey's appt go? What did they wind up doing?
I stayed home yesterday, no errands, yay. And it got up to 63! Rode BJ for a few mins bareback and he was good. I'm hoping we'll see rain today and/or tomorrow, but who knows. Anyway, hope you have a great thursday.

Wow I really hope your weather doesn't come our way. Prayers that everyone's travel is safe. We used to raise rabbits. Dad had over 300 at one time. He only let young ones run together. Glad your bunny came back to you. They make great pets. They are calling for rain with possible freezing tonight. Then 50's tomorrow. By end of Sunday back to the 20's. My weather sounds like a vacations compared to yours. Went out and tried on Jax's new blanket. It is med/heavy. Really needed last week. But, there are so many horses in the barn the med was fine. Just want a heavier for when he is out and the wind is howling. Vicki & Big Jax

HI Mistic, here's a vote for ya. Sounds like you're having a heat wave too! Yes the winds have been horrible, and today we had some blowing going on too! That's nice that you were able to take your mom out shopping with you. I bet she was very happy to be out and about! Well we started out in the low 20's and did get up to a whopping 38 degrees up here on the mountain, they said downtown got to 41! I had the truck appointment and made out great! They finally got the new dealership owners into the Ford Owner Advantage program that Magerano had. So I got credit for my last servicing and have about $10 on hand, plus have earned my free oil change! It's like buy 5 and the 6th is free. Yay next one if free, that's like over a $100 savings. Plus they gave me my senior 10% discount again on everything. Got home and Honey and I went and played in the back yard and then the indoor. She ran like crazy! Then Paige got lunged, Indy got to free play and so did Bullseye. After that they got lunch of hay and fresh water. I came up and had my lunch finally at 2:30 and then relaxed the rest of the day! I've never heard that saying about the wind, but that's not surprising, down here. Sorry the wind messed up that nice 20 degrees. One of these days, maybe you'll get sun AND above 0 AND no wind.
I rode Allie out in the pasture yesterday and she did well out there too. We loped a little and she was real good about letting me steer her (gotta dodge all the fire ant hills, which is a challenge). She seemed to understand the step around better yesterday after sleeping on it. We're still only doing one step and only to the left right now until she gets it pretty good, then I'll introduce going to the right and add more steps as she's ready. Might be turning into a handy little horse (except for her half-acre stop, lol). I was really happy with her. Trimmed her fronts afterward and it was dark by then.

20 above must seem warm after all that nasty winds. Hard to keep fingers warm when you have to do the work you do. Heat wave it got up to 8 today. At least I have got a lot done. Saddle and bridle are ready for spring. Hopefully I get to ride before then. My outdoor girl (cat) went out and couldn't decide to stay out or come back in. Gave her 5 minutes and she was already waiting at the door. Will take a ride out to see my boy tomorrow. Before the snow comes. Vicki & Big Jax

Really, they can smell that far away? Pretty phenomenal animals. My herd still doesn't have any excuses, it wasn't particularly windy that day, very clear, just chilly. No cats or people or anything out moving in the field. My daughter, who loves big cats, says that they hunt and eat a lot more when it's cold, so maybe that's hardwired into a horse's brain. Even little Cinni was trotting around.
We're getting into the high 30s now, so what we break or thaw in the am stays thawed out in the afternoon, which is nice. Warms up alot after sunday.
Hang in there and stay warm.

Wow that is a lot miles to drive in one day. I hope the roads were clear for him. How long does it take to carry all that water out. You are a hard worker. Our weather is a lot like yours right now. I feel bad for Boston. I can't believe all the flooding they have had. Flooding in itself is sad but all that frozen ice with it. Just can't imagine. Well it was a day of being inside. Winds up to 50 mph. So I baked a pie and did laundry. City knocked on the door. One of my neighbors has frozen pipes. So they did a reading, told me to keep one of my cold water faucets running. Told him no problem, I know the drill. Been here 25 years and this is about the 4th time. Better than frozen pipes. Put tape over the faucet I am leaving on. That way I don't turn it off by accident. Same weather for tomorrow. Think I'll make mac and cheese. Lexie called said Jax is doing good. Nice and warm and calm. I thanked her for going above and beyond being a trainer. I really do appreciate her and Mike. Vicki & Big Jax

Hi Mistic, here's a vote for ya. Glad that Mike could call someone to go over and check out Tristen's water problem and he didn't have to drive another 100 mile round trip! Glad that you got everyone bedded down with hay and shavings, they'll need it for sure! Well that blizzard that hit the coast was about 5 inches for us, but south Jersey got hammered with up to 20 inches in some counties! Of course I have some bare spots from the wind and then the drifts that are just not fun! Went out about 11 am and started with the snow blower and did all down and around the barn and indoor and out to the manure pile. Then hit the tractor and did about the width of the blacktop and the truck is free to roll. Then used the snow blower and did the gravel side of the driveway. So all in all, about 2.5 hours of freezing my butt off in 09 degrees with the wind whipping! Looks like the rest of the driveway by the L/Q trailer and garage doors will be getting done on Sunday! Yes not Sat, as our high for tomorrow will be only 04 with wind chills of -20 degrees! This cowgirl isn't going out! Kevin just came and took the tractor home to do his driveway, he's gonna freeze, it's only 03 right now! Oh Mo's in the house downstairs in the Rec. Rm. Hopefully he'll stay there all night, there is a litter box for him. Barn will have a hard time staying at 30 tonight! Honey will go potty out the back, got the stairs all cleaned off for her. Here's to warmer weather next week! Marion and the blondes.

So all the critters are doing well, even with the cold weather? You're doing a good job of caring for them all.
Yes, having a find to help sure makes a job more fun. And there may have been some talking with our hands, lol.
Nothing much here. Assorted errands yesterday, still no horse time, though the way and the whole herd was jumping and running, spooked by absolutely nothing at all, maybe it's a bad time to ride. I did get 2 more round bales. Thought I was through buying hay, but they're going through alot in this cold weather.

The winds make it so much worse. I'm with you the cold can be tolerated, but winds take it to a whole new level. Went out and checked Jax. He seems very happy. Won't be this weekend with the cold coming back in. We are having a heat wave. It's 20 right now. I can feel the snow moving in. So after it falls, back into the minuses. Woke to my furnace not turning off. My furnace guys came. Need a part but I have heat. So he will return later today. Glad I realized it wasn't turning off. Could have been bad with what's coming. Gosh, -20s to single digit highs? And for days on end too. That's a special kid of cold. Yeah, hope Mother Nature gets it out of her system.
Yep, so thankful that the guy was able to get out and replace the unit yesterday. I feel like such a weeny, but it was marvelous to come home to nice even heat throughout the house again. May use the kerosene heater to help me thaw out a hose well enough to refill the water trough. We've been putting out warm water for the wild birds too and they almost don't wait for us to walk away before they're at it. What do the birds do up there for water?

Hi Mistic, here's a vote for ya. Okay, so then there must be something that at the colder temps freezes up on the thermostat for sure! But glad that the heat is still working upstairs in the house. Yes, I feel so bad for Honey, she wants to be with me, but then walks half way and stops and picks up a paw like what Sadie does. And Lord knows, I can't go and carry her! Well we got up to a whopping 22 degrees today! And with sun! Got the kids to the indoor for a little exercise. And tomorrow will be the same in the afternoon, like maybe 23 even, but a rough start of 02 they are saying! So I called an cancelled my asthma checkup so that I could stay home and get the kids out again before the next three days of snow and single digit daytime temps! So they'll be in again for a few days! Our street is pure white from all the road salt on it, it's like I know there's blacktop under there somewhere! Well almost time to go and feed! Hope Mo don't run out like he did last night. And he wouldn't come when called, so I opened the hay barn door about 4 inches for him. He bedded down in there over night thank God! He could have froze to death otherwise! Marion and the blondes.

Happy 2018!
You're right, especially homeless folks or people living in shacks. Hope the shelters can accommodate them all during these really cold spells.
Do you feed the chickens whole sunflower seeds or shelled? Thats a good idea, to add some fat. My sister in law gives me her old bread, and I figure that has some oil for them. But also salt, so I don't give them too much. Also some meal worms as a treat for extra protein. I need to give them more veggies. Heck, I need to give us more veggies too.
I have a theory that a horse's brain, sitting up high between their ears, freezes slightly when it's cold and they get stupid. They spook at nothing and everything, even when they're supposed to be eating. Oi!
Went and got a kerosene heater, which is supposed to heat the whole house and burn clean. I've never used one so user error is entirely possible, but it stunk to high heaven and somewhat warmed the den, nothing else. Walmart was sold out of propane bottles already but Lowes had some. Needless to say, no horse time what with trying to run around and find stuff and learn the kerosene heater. Not sure it's safe to be on the horses anyway, what with their frozen brains, lol.
Well, hope you have a good monday, a happy new year, and stay warm.

Probably about 40 of us. Most of us were there. It's time like this I wish my children lived closer. I gave him a cooler for his horse. He isn't sure if he is going to barrel race this winter. But, if he does, it will cover Rudy from halter to tail. I don't enjoy going out any more. Plus it's too cold. Boys are spending the night. I don't know that my chickens know how to peck through ice. There was a thin film of ice on their water the other day and once I broke it for them, they all started drinking. In fact, I took warm water out the other day, and even though their water actually hadn't frozen, they all preferred the warm water. I thought that was pretty funny. Evidently, you can spoil a chicken, lol.
We had a beautiful day yesterday but due to commitments here and there, didn't have time to ride (grrr). I did clean out the chickens' laying boxes and add another layer of shavings to their coop. Oh, and the fun news, the heater/ac unit is toast and no one is open until tuesday. A friend brought over a couple of hanging lights to hang near the pipes that are exposed under the back porch, and he also lent us his propane heaters (gonna have to get a couple of those). We don't run the heaters at night for safety reasons, so it's pretty chilly by morning, but at least we can heat the house back up somewhat. I'm hoping the guy can replace the unit tuesday because it's supposed to get down into the mid teens tuesday night. So yeah, ain't it always the worst possible timing when things break down?
Anyway, hope you have a great sunday and stay warm.

That's quite the routine, but it's pretty smart about the bucket of boiling water. Glad Mike helps with the routine. We got up to 39 yesterday so I didn't think about checking anybody's water and the poor chickens had ice still when I fed them in the evening. So I guess I'll be swapping out their water the next few days.
Are you at least dry with those low temps? -26 seems like it ought to be instant death for everything, almost artic circle temps. Ugh.
The electrician came and finished up yesterday. I asked him what the next step is, and it's an inspection followed by the power company coming out to switch meters, so don't know when that'll be. Since I had to be there while they were in and out, I did get a little horse time, trimmed BJ's fronts and then rode him bareback for a few minutes. While he was tied for his trim, the guys brought out a tape measure. BJ hates tape measures! So that slowed me down and wound him up a bit, and we didn't get much done training wise as a result. I did get some zippy spins though, lol, some of the fastest he's ever done.
Well, another chilly day for everybody. Stay warm and have a good friday.

Hi Mistic, here's a chilly vote for ya. Do you have to leave different water pipes open in the house to keep the lines from freezing during this cold snap? I might just drip the kitchen sink tonight. Using the oil heat to keep those pipes from freezing! Well 07 at wake up time, they said high of 17! Once again they guessed wrong, high was 11/12! And with the windchill it was -04! So not much got done at all! Took one load of hay, 3 bales to the barn in the wheel barrel that was it. Got the mail, didn't even want to walk that far, only 150 feet to the mail box! Kids got the bums rush, hayed watered and cleaned stall at 2 pm. They each now have on two blankets and sheet! Hopefully tomorrow they are right and it does hit the 17 they are predicting after tonight 02 degrees prediction. I have to try to get them to the indoor! Roads are clear, just pure white from all the road salt on them! I have to go to Tractor Supply for Paige's grain in the morning! Marion and the blondes.

I hope you guys are okay. I know you have been hit hard with the cold. It seems the cold is all across the country. We are in the minuses. Went out and checked on Jax He was happy and warm. Not sure he got to stretch his legs today. All were in. Same for the next week. I have my boys as mom was asked to work. We are all snuggled in and having soup. Stay warm. Vicki & Big Jax

Goodness, that's some crazy cold you're having. Glad so many of your family were able to get together for Christmas, I remember that you haven't always been able to get together when the weather was too bad.
We had a great visit with my parents and my sister and her hubby. Didn't see either of her kids, but both of mine were there. Visits always fly by too fast, and it's back to work this morning, so I'd better scoot. Stay warm and have a good wednesday.

We have a large family too. My children live on the west coast and farrer. So I go to my brother David's. He has 5 children and they all go. So lots of fun. My driveway is still all ice. With the weather in single digits and the high winds the ice melt I purchased didn't even touch it. I did put sand down. Hopefully that will help. Saw Jax on Sunday. Turned him lose in the arena and then groomed him. I didn't go out on Christmas the roads were bad and I don't think the trucks were out. My niece came and picked me up. We went to her dads's in the mountains. Then to her home for dinner. When her friend came over I had her take me home. Veronica stayed with the boys Happy she didn't have to take them back out in the cold. Looks like the single digits are here for a couple weeks. Weather is so hard on all living things. Stay warm and be safe. Vicki & Big Jax

Hi Mistic, here's a Merry Christmas vote for ya! WOW you certainly had a busy day on Sunday! Sounds like you got some really good buys for sure! Well sorry I missed yesterday on HC! The day just got away from me. I had to work the horses and do a few things, then knowing that I'd be home late from Kate & Eric's Christmas Eve Party and Dinner, I decided to take a nice nap before an early feeding of the horses. Had a very good time and had to drive home in yet another sleet and freezing rain, turning to snow storm! It was the drive from He##! Today woke up to 3 inches of heavy wet type snow. And freezing temps and howling winds! Plugged the tractor in and after a two hour nap from feeding the Christmas Breakfast to the horses, I got dressed and went out and plowed the driveway. Then Honey and I played in the snow for a few minutes, gave the horses lunch of hay and fresh water. Then it was over to Kevin's to have some Christmas time with him and his family. There were like 9 of us, had a good time. Was asked to stay for dinner, but they were having Prime Rib and one I don't do meat and they do it rare! I know just sitting at the table and seeing that raw blood meat, I'd be sick and lose it. So I said I had to get home to the horses. I was proud of Kevin, no beer for him at all! Well hope that everyone had a wonderful Christmas Day! Marion and the blondes.

Yay, glad you got some really good deals out shopping. Don't you just love when that happens?
So glad you can get to mass both days. I've had to work the last 2 Sundays in a row, so I'm really missing not being at church for Christmas at all. Can't wait to go next Sunday.
We got a little light rain in the afternoon yesterday, maybe a tenth of an inch, so no horse time. But I went over to a friend's house for coffee and to swap presents, and had a great visit with her and her hubby. She has horses too and shows, and also works at the same hospital as I do but on a different floor. Because we're both so busy we almost never get to visit, so I really enjoyed sitting down and talking to her.
Well, off to work and then we go down to visit my folks tomorrow, so if I don't get on HC, hope you have a very Merry Christmas.

PS. I left a poem on Allie's page, just a little Christmas
fun.

HOTD is an honor. Jax is very happy to be in the spotlight. I'm sure your house guests will have fun with everyone. Nice for them now they are not alone. woke to freezing rain about 1/4". Waiting for the rain but not sure that is going to be a good thing. We have the cold coming back. If I can't clear the rain and drain it, we will have a bigger mess. I would rather have snow then ice. Nice you found the wolves. I bet they are pretty especially with the lights. Have a very Merry Christmas. Vicki & Big Jax

You're right, the tree would "somehow" get in the way and be a victim of energetic dog play.
I think I'd rather gave rain than snow, at least you can drive in it. I guess it's all what you're used to, huh? Snow is so pretty though. Does it still look like a winter wonderland there? Glad you didn't get 72 inches, lol.
No horse news, except that they've gotten REALLY good at begging. Hay in the morning, hay and soaked alfalfa cubes for supper. They figure, why not see if she'll feed us every time she comes outside? And BJ hangs his head over the gate and gives me this look that cons a couple of peppermints out of me as well. Like I'm a walking food dispenser, lol.
Anyway, hope you have a great friday.

Hi Mistic, here's a vote for ya. Love the idea of hanging a can on her collar, I wiggle for change! WOW so how far do you have to go to take care of this other farm? Is it like a long drive? Hope not! Don't need doing that with the snow storm moving in on ya! Well the sun was shinning all day long! Started out at 27 and made a high of 34 F degrees, but felt good, little breeze! Got more hay to the barn, that's done for a couple of days now. And then cleaned up the back yard where that wood was all dropped off. Nice and clean again! Got Paige lunged and 5 minutes of showmanship work, Indy got lunged too today. Bullseye went out in the one pasture, but didn't eat, just honked to be in the barn! Honey and I got in a little over a mile walk. That was it for today! Now a winter mix for tomorrow, with ice to start the day! Not going to be fun, have my yak-trax all set up and ready to go! Marion and the blondes.
