My Horse Profile

Arabian from Lascassas, TN

Ginger

About Me

Active within 2351 Days

I am from Lascassas, TN and I've been a Club Horse member for 7 years, 5 months and 10 days

Nicknames: Darling, Gin Jar

Age: 7 years old

Gender: Mare

Breed: Arabian

Height: Small. I'm pretty sure she's a pony. I forget what makes a pony. She's probably close to 14hh.

Color: Ginger is so cute! She's chestnut, almost a strawberry roan, with four white stockings and a big white blaze. Right now, she has a mohawk because the burrs were so bad in her mane that I had to cut it off completely (Remember, un-broke horse here, so that was really hard!). It looks so funny. The picture of her grazing and the one with Casper show this if you look really hard.

Type of Riding: N/A

My Horse's Achievements: Nope.

Okay, so that's a little harsh. Ginger's never really been messed with, and we've owned her for six years. So now - yes, just now - I'm attempting to halter break her. She's been halter broken before, a few years back, but it. . . wore off, I guess is how you could put it. She has allowed me to touch her feet lately, however. And I can approach her most of the time.

My Horse's Favorite Treat: Loves carrots!

My Horse's Favorite Things To Do: Canter! I wish I could ride Ginger just to feel her canter! She canters up to the barn every night when I feed. I love to watch her and just feel thankful that I even have her.

Pet Peeves: As with my gelding Casper, Lorelai Valentine, my five-month-old calf. Ginger hates Lorelai even more than Casper does. Ginger bares her teeth and flattens her ears every time poor Lor comes near. Thank goodness she's never hurt her though.

My Horse's motto: It doesn't matter if you can't hop on their back, just as long as you care about them.

How We Met

My family got three Quarab yearlings for Christmas one year: Flash, Chocolate, and Ginger. We also had a Shetland pony at the time. We ended up selling Flash, and giving Chocolate to a friend. The pony, Molly, died in 2003. I've had other horses: a racking horse named Buckshot, a Percheron/Clyde- sdale named Spudweiser, and a miniature named Cracker Jack; but they're all gone now. I guess what I'm trying to say is that horses have come and gone throughout my life, but Ginger has been there through it all. I've found it doesn't matter if you can't hop on their back, just as long as you care about them. And I'll care about her even more after we develop a trusting (hopefully halter happy) relationship..

Will you do a champion pony a favor? Please vote for Theadore O'Conner, Karen O'Conner's eventing star! The dear pony had to be euthanized May 28 after falling and hurting himself severely. He was short-listed for the Olympics this year and he's won the Team and Individual Gold Medalist from the 2007 Pan American Games and had top six finishes at the Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event in 2007 and 2008. He was the 2007 USEF/Farnam Horse of the Year. Can we all honor this pony with the power by giving him Horse Of The Day?

i've been so busy too, i've got band and athletics, well i'm getting out of athletics, so that a big help. i'm a junior and i've gotta get classes in. what do you play in the bland?? have you tried coaxing her into a pin and then roping her and taking the halter off? this may sound cruel but you might need some help by getting a friend on horseback and rope ginger and take that halter off...my boss and i had to do that, sometimes you've gotta get a little ruff. well i hope it works out...

How big is her pasture? If it isn't like more then 2 or three acres you could have two people with lunge whips and you could chase her around until she is so tired that she can't fight you anymore. Yes, I do know that it is easier said then done but you could do it. i did it once and it actually worked!!! well, I'll ofcourse, leave pretty a vote.

Treats, Rods, and Lack of Blogs
Ginger is head-shy, as I've told some of you. I've been trying to work on her to be, simply put, less head-shy. For example, every night before I feed her, I must be able to touch her muzzle. And on good nights, I stay out there with her and hold her head for a few minutes, rubbing it over and keeping her relaxed. It's been working. I'm MORE able to approach her in the field - it's still not easy, mind you, but it's easier. Well, today, I went out to pet Ginger and Casper for a few minutes. I brought these new molasses treats I bought with me. I fed them each one, and Ginger let me touch her all over her face! And then, after ALL THE TREATS WERE GONE, she STILL LET ME RUB HER FACE!!! Yay! I came back inside for a few minutes, totally psyched by Ginger's good behavior, before going to get the mail. I got my new Rod's catalog today. Another yay! If you haven't checked out Rod's, just go to their website, rods.com, and order a free catalog. (NOTE: I collect catalogs, but I never buy anything, so prices are ignored; as I flip through right now, though, there are good deals, outrageously good deals, and really big I-just-got-majorly-ripped-off deals, but the catalog is FREE!) One more thing before I go: What happened to my blogs lately? No one talking to me? Well, then again, I quit blogging too... My fault. Oh, well. But, I mean, come on, people. I blog back!

Come visit me, Casper, Ginger & Lorelai Valentine.

Ginger is really pretty. I'm sorry that she has these problems. There is a supplement that you can give cribbers that is supposed to curb their desire for wood. It comes in pellet form. Perhaps this would help? As for the bare patches I'm not sure what that would be. There are numerous causes that fit your description. Can you call a vet near you and ask? It may be mites, or a fungus, or perhaps she's just itchy from losing her winter fur and has been rubbing it off. I don't know. Well, good luck with her and here's a vote.

Problems... Read on...
Whenever I got Casper a month and a half ago, he was kept in a small one acre pasture with Ginger for about a week. After a few days, he began to spend a lot of time around these trees. I thought he simply wanted to be in the shade, but Grandma said she saw him cribbing. I'm like, "Oh no, Casper's a cribber!" So, I went out there and saw him doing what looked like cribbing. But when I got up there, he stopped. I looked at the tree closely. Nearly all of the bark had been pulled off the tree, but there were no teeth marks. Anywhere. And it almost looked like there were wood shaving around the base of the tree. So, I don't think he was cribbing. My cousing's $15,000 show horse was a cribber. Moon always left deep teeth marks whenever he cribbed, and he was really thin. Also, his teeth hurt him, and he took forever to eat because of it. But Casper is fat, eats quickly, and there are no teeth marks. Anyways, this isn't about Casper. Casper quit when he moved into the big pasture (which makes me think he was bored), but now Ginger is doing it! I don't know what to do. Help!! And one more problem: she keeps losing fur in random places. Ginger hasn't been brushed in, literally, years (I feel like the Humane Society is going to come get me now). I have been, for the last 10 or so months, rubbing the dirt out of her coat when it was particularly dirty. Anyway, lately, I've been messing with her more and more, and now that I CAN look her over thoroughly, I've noticed that she has hairless patches around her rump, back, and there's also a place beside her ear. I put iodine on it tonight, suspecting rain rot. Does anyone know of anything I can do? If so, write me below. I would appreciate any help at all. Thanks so much.

Come visit me, Casper, Ginger & Lorelai Valentine.

Hi
I think that Pat toured with Chris Cox for a while, but I'm not totally sure. Concerning being barn sour I read a article about it too by Parelli, but I can't remember everything. I haven't really had any problems with my horse being barn sour, but being herd sour. You could always e-mail Parelli at usa@parelli.com and they will forward your e-mail to a Parelli instructor. Also when you start level 1, your horse wants to be with you more and in turn will make them more eager to go places with you. I'm sorry that I can't answer you question in more detail. If I come across anything I will let you know.

Hi There
Sorry so long to respond to your blog. I know what you mean about loving them even if you are not riding. I have my work cut out for me with Firefly. We rode for the first time since our big fall on Saturday the 7th. It was nice but surreal. I think I will only rejoice and take a sigh of relief, once we have had our 100th ride. I love her dearly and if all I do is brush her, feed her, and scratch her back to cause that parrot nose, then I am happy.
Good luck with your Ginger.

Clinton Anderson(from his website):

Sun. 1:30 am 12:30 11:30 pm 10:30 pm

Concerning Monty Roberts and Parelli. I do just think that Parelli is an easier format to learn. I watch Monty Roberts occasionally on RFD and I just don't like what he does as much. When I was first trying to find a natural horsemanship program, I e-mailed several, but Parelli was the only one that e-mailed me back and answered all my questions. I e-mailed them quite a few times with a lot of questions and they were always happy to answer.
You probably would pick up some stuff from Clinton Anderson if you went to his tour. He actually learned from Pat Parelli, but decided to go do his own thing instead of becomming a Parelli instructor.
Like I've said before. Let me know if you have any more questions. I don't mind answering them.

Come visit me, Milly, Jewel, Ashes & Skippy.

Hi
Actually I can't think of any downsides to Parelli. The price is the main killer to anyone that wants to get started in Parelli and doesn't have a ton of money. I had to save up for a while. Parelli isn't a quick fix program. It is a program designed to help you build a relationship with your horse. With my horse I saw big changes in his attitude towards me within a few days.
The new level 1 and 2 are very well made. I can understand everything that they talk about and be able to use it when working with my horse.
I checked out other natural horsemanship people before I chose Parelli and I didn't like most of the things that I saw. Such as with Clinton Anderson he is mostly concerned with the goal and not the relationship with the horse. I have watched him on RFD-TV (I'm not sure if you have that) and he uses a lot of force compared to Parelli. I checked out Monty Roberts and he just wasn't what I was looking for. I also checked out John Lyons, but I don't think that anyone has come up with a very hands on learning program like Parelli.
I hope this answers your question. Let me know if you have any more.

Come visit me, Milly, Jewel, Ashes & Skippy.
