How We Met

After my gelding was taken from me, Nelly came into my life. She was a good companion and great friend. She taught me so much more than any other horse has. The only reason I got her was because I felt I owed it to my parents. They were trying so hard to soothe my broken heart, so I bought her. She turned out to be one of the most beautiful, loving, hard working horses I have ever seen. Her eyes were so deep; it was like you were looking into the fountain of youth--so clear and sweet. We got into many accidents in which Nell was hurt. One ended up in a bowed tendon while another ended up worse. Once Nelly impaled herself on a tree branch. Luckily, her ribs stopped the wood before it hit any organs. In the end, Nell deteriorated so fast due to a hard life of working cattle in the sun. Her eyesight went bad; Navicular plagued her front hooves. There was a lump in her uterus, probably a tumor. There was a blockage in her spine that made her hind end weak and swollen. I couldnt watch her lose weight every day. Even after I got Bud back she got worse and worse. There were some weeks she felt so good that she would run and buck and play. I didn't stop her. This was her retirement; she was supposed to have fun. Supplements and love kept her with me two years later than she would have been if I hadn't spent every last ounce of my energy on making her feel good. Finally I couldn't help my little girl anymore. She's buried in the backyard now, and every mother's day I put a rose on her grave and tell her how much she meant to me. Throughout all our adventures and troubles she trusted me. She loved me..
