Quarter Horse from Salem, OH

About Me

Active within 553 Days

I am from Salem, OH and I've been a Club Horse member for 10 years, 7 months and 12 days

Nicknames: I sometimes call her Chey, short for Cheyanne. I like to think of her as being my Sonador like from the movie 'Dreamer' with everything she been through.

Age: 14 years old

Gender: Mare

Breed: Quarter Horse

Height: 14.3 hh

Color: Golden Palomino color with white mane and tail, white blaze on face, one white sock on a hind leg and one on the a front leg.

Type of Riding: Western pleasure and some trail riding (riding is limited with her because she has bad hind legs)

My Horse's Achievements: She and I have bonded so much in just alittle over a year since I first got her.

Also she maybe in foal and will be due around July 17, 2009!

My Horse's Favorite Treat: She love apples and carrots. Gave her Life Saver hard candy and she seem to like them!!

My Horse's Favorite Things To Do: Cheyanne loves to just hang out in the pasture with the other horses. She also loves spending time with her owner; getting a lot of love and attention!

Pet Peeves: She is a little nervous and spooked easily sometimes

My Horse's motto: Just up the road from my home is a field,
with two horses in it.
From a distance, each looks like every other horse.
But if you stop your car, or are walking by,
you will notice something quite amazing.
Looking into the eyes of one horse will
disclose that he is blind.
His owner has chosen not to have him put down,
but has made a good home for him.
This alone is amazing.
If nearby and listening,
you will hear the sound of a bell.
Looking around for the source of the sound,
you will see that it comes from the
smaller horse in the field.
Attached to her halter is a small bell.
It lets her blind friend know where she is,
so he can follow her.
As you stand and watch these two friends,
you'll see how she is always checking on him,
and that he will listen for her bell and then
slowly walk to where she is, trusting that she
will not lead him astray. When she returns to the
shelter of the barn each evening, she stops
occasionally and looks back, making sure her
friend isn't too far behind to hear the bell.

Like the owners of these two horses,
God does not throw us away just because
we are not perfect or because we have problems
or challenges. He watches over us and even brings
others into our lives to help us when we are in need.
Sometimes we are the blind horse being guided by
the little ringing bell of those who God places in our lives.
Other times we are the guide horse, helping others see.
Good friends are like this .

How We Met

My parants and sibblings had horses when I was too young to own a horse of my own. We kept them at a friend's farm since we didn't live on a farm. However, we got rid of the horses when I was 7 years old. So almost 15 years later I started looking into getting a horse. But not just any horse, a palomino horse! You see, I always wanted a palomino horse since I was really little. I checked online and watched the newspapers; however, the price was always too high for what I could pay.

One day I found a palomino in the paper for a reasonable price! I told my mom to call and get the details about it. However, she didn't. She told me it was a bad time to get a horse because we had no place to put one. At the time we were looking to move and buy a farm so we could get horses. So I continued to watch the newspapers. I thought that the palomino would be sold fast, so when the ad was gone I figured it was sold.

Two weeks later the same palomino was in the paper again for an even lower price. I told my mom she had to call and get the details on it because I said, "Either there was something wrong with the horse or it was just meant for me to have it". So my mom call and set it up for us to go look at it; needless to say, I was sold on buying the horse at first sight! It was a beautiful golden Palomino Quarter Horse, 2 year old filly. I named her Cheyanne.

And as for the anwser on if she was meant for me to have her or if something was wrong with her... I like to think it's both! The lady I bought Cheyanne from said that she bought Cheyanne only to save her form a guy who abused her. The lady was just looking to sell her to a good home. The lady told me that the guy tried riding Cheyanne when she was only 1 year old, was rough with putting the saddle and tack on her, and would even beat her with some of the tack. The horse was scared of almost everything and didn't trust people too much from being abused. Plus her hind legs are bad from being riden too soon and so she can't hold too much weight or go for long rides.

And to tell the truth, we have BOTH come a long way in the time I have owned her! Since we got rid of the horses when I was only 7 years old, I really didn't know anything about horses and my family didn't remember much either since it been over 14 years since we last had horses. As for Cheyanne, she is my baby girl and I am never getting rid of her. I love her too much!

Big hi to all. Jessica came out Wednesday with her boyfriend, David. Sadie was bad. While Jessica picked her hooves, Sadie yanked her back hoof away. She bucked a couple of times, too, when Jessica rode her. She did okay with me. The strap on the saddle pinched a bruise on the inside of my left knee. Shouldn't have worn shorts. Found the missing fly mask, too. Jessica and I dumped Sadie's water trough to clean it out, and there it was. It had sunk to the bottom of the trough. I didn't think to check there. Silly horse....Congratulations to Fancy Walk N that Way on winning May HOTM! Love and a vote.

“Autumn, the year's last, loveliest smile” (William Cullen Bryant)

Q: Why do potatoes make good detectives?
A: Because they keep their eyes peeled.

Today's photo was taken September 28, 2011. Fancy is performing the only trick that I know I have taught her. I say stump and she will put her front feet onto that old tree stump.

How was your weekend? We enjoyed a nice cool Carolina weekend here. Fancy's hooves had grown out and were beginning to chip, so I decided to try my hand at rasping. I had the tools for over a year, but I was afraid to try. I looked up how to trim hooves on youtube and I did it! I did as little as possible since it was my first time. Made my back hurt, but no more chipping hooves for now. I was very glad they didn't need to be trimmed, only shaped up. I tell you if you ever try it, you will appreciate a farrier with a strong back, LOL. Have you ever tried to do a horses hooves? If you have, how did you come out on the job?

Fancy is leaving a vote for you this Friday morning.

King Kong was very bad yesterday. King did not want to listen to my brother and my brother's friend wanted to help, so he got on King. While my brother's friend was riding King the horse reared and they fell back. He is ok, only suffered whiplash and soreness. We don't know what got into King. When he reared, there was no bit pressure at all. So he could have moved in any direction and he chose up :(

Fancy was very good. My son has ridden her. He has gotten bored riding in the corral, so we walk around the block and through the car wash. My son loves to ride her. He would like me to turn him lose. But I don't think Fancy or my son are ready for that. Because she is still very young and I know my son does not have experience in case something did frighten her. But so far she has been so wonderful on his rides out. I don't take that for granted and I pray that she remains steady.
What are you up to on the last Friday in September?

Fancy & I love all of our HorseChannel friends and we hope you guys will stop by her page to vote each day in October so Fancy can be your November HOTM.

"A friend is one who walks in when others walk out" (Walter Winchell)

Fancy's sliding by in the mud to leave you this Tuesday vote. We hope your holiday weekend was most delightful. Did you enjoy any horsey time? We did nothing here this weekend. Now it is raining off and on☁

Lots of friends asked how I began to teach Fancy to lay down. Here is my comment on that.
1. First you teach the horse to let you handle his front feet. You teach them to let you hold that foot up for long as you want to with out taking it back.
2. Rope breaking helps. I mean throwing the rope all around their body, head, and legs till they are in no way fearful or uncomfy with that feel and touch.
3. You need 2 SOFT ropes. Don't tie, but loop one around the horse's front near pastern (ankle area), you will use this to hold the hoof up only, Make sure this rope never gets tight because it may slow or stop blood flow.
4. Second SOFT rope attaches to the halter as usual, except you run it between the front legs to the off side of your horse and across the back to lay on the same side of his body as the leg you are going to lift.
5. Lift the foot using the rope that is around that foot. Hold still until he is o.k. with that. Hold the foot up at the point that it touches the belly. No tighter than necessary and don't tighten as you go.
6. Teach the bow. Grab the rope that is attached to the halter it should lay just behind the withers and pull slowly and softly until he gives with his nose. His head will tip slightly then he is ready for a bow. He should go back and downward until his knee touches the ground. You have to know your horse. Let him up before he gets upset. Just in case he lays all the way down at this point, keep in mind, which ever way his nose tips is the direction his feet will lay. Stay clear of his feet so you don't get kicked.
7. If he lay down from the bow, you want to rub all over him before he gets up and tell him how great he is!
8. If he didn't lay down from the bow on his own, redo the bow and hold in the bow position and he should lay down. You may need to slightly increase the pressure with the rope that is across his withers. But remember to be very gentle. He should lay down. Depending on the horse, it may take a few times to get all the way down.

Look up Ken McNabb on the internet, his method is very gentle.
I also learned that you do not want to ride a horse up from the ground until it is over 5 years old because it's bones are still growing and you can damage it's developing bone structure, which could lead to future problems.
If I confused you, let me know or look it up on the internet. I hope this has helped.

Also if you know something that will help me with this, please leave me a blog about it!

The Horse
Where in this wide world can man find nobility without pride,
Friendship without envy,
Or beauty without vanity?
Here, where grace is served with muscle

There is nothing so powerful, nothing less violent.
There is nothing so quick, nothing more patient.

Monday was so awesome! Sadie got a good workout. Now Austin wants to ride. It'll be his first time on a horse. David's coming over today to work Sadie some more. I'm excited. I'm looking forward to another ride. Yahoo! Now I'm a cowgirl. Now I gotta get some boots. And the 3 are getting along good. A butt kicking or 2 at mealtime, but good.... Lightning's such a good boy. David rode him bareback with just his halter on. My turn!! When I hug Lightning, I feel like a little girl hugging her big red teddy bear. Someone told me to give Lightning back to Mark because he's too old and to get a young horse. I have a young horse now and Lightning's not going anywhere. .. I do need a new saddle, but that's going to be in the spring, too. Someday I'll get everything done that I need to do. ...And I got offered another horse! For free. I had to say no. May have a home for it. Rick's checkng on it for me. Leaving a big hug and a Yahoo it's Wednesday vote.

I hope you have had as much fun as we have today! Today was bath day for Fancy. After her bath my son (on his bike) and I hand walked Fancy around the block. We let her graze before going home. I saddled Fancy and I rode her around the neighborhood and through the car wash:), while my son rode his bike. She surprised me by walking sooo slow the whole time. I couldn't believe it. I didn't even have to fight with her to go into our yard. She was just layed back and easy going! I was just surprised! I took tons of photos with my clean girl. Now she smells fresh too! I hated to put her into her corral. I hope she doesn't roll tonight:( I will see about that in the morning, LOL.

I entered Fancy in the Virtual Horse/Baby Face contest. Please vote for her.
