Hi from Shybang
Great to hear from you. I don't get on this site alot lately but something made me look at it today and I got your message from just 2 days ago. Glad to hear Angel is doing okay now and that your barn is complete. I bet you do love it. Let me know when you breed Angel again. I want to sweat it out with you. You can find me on Facebook more than here so if you need to send a message, either my home email or find me in Facebook as Patricia Marlowe Barrett. I'm glad to hear from someone who actually saw my ad. When you advertise on Facebook, you don't know how many times your ad will show or what times etc. But I got enough clicks on it to reach my maximum daily budget. (I only ran it for that one day and received 123 clicks - 14% of those clicked through so that was good) Hopefully it will generate a sale or two. Hope all else is well - will look for you on facebook

I haven't been on HC since 12-28-08 and when I read your blog posted 1-30-09 I was devastated!! I am so sorry for you and Angel. What in the world did the doctor say happened? Your description was like nothing I ever heard of or read about in all the reading I did when Jazz was pregnant with Shybang. I gasped out loud when I saw your blog. I am crying for, eight months horribly sad for you. Are you going to breed her back? I hope so. How is Angel? Was it just fluid or was there a fetus at all? I am at a loss for words other than to say how sorry I am - tell Angel that Shybang and I love her and I hope she will be having another baby in the coming future. Next time something big like that happens if I haven't responded, please email me at my regular email addr - if you still have it - I am so sorry I didn't come on line sooner to repond to your message. Keep in touch. Love Pattie and Shybang

A Vote for You, Angel
Hi - it was so funny but the very next day after you sent your message saying you hoped I'd get my roof soon I was getting ready for work and thought my water heater in the attic was about to explode because of all the bumping and banging noise, so I threw on a robe and ran out into the main part of the house and when I looked outside I had a crew of workers standing outside and some were already on the house scraping off shingles. I left my cell phone in the truck that night and missed the call telling me that the roofers would be there in the morning. What a way to start the day - glad I grabbed my robe!!! I now have a very nice looking roof and no more tarps - finally after 3 months it is about time. Hope all is well with you and that you had a blessed Christmas - and are looking forward to a happy new year with the new foal getting closer every day. I want you to post a pregnant picture of Angel. I would love to see her little bulge. Have you tried to feel the baby move yet. I can't remember for sure but I think I felt Shybang move inside of Jazz for the first time when Jazz was 6 or 7 months along. I'll never forget it. I had felt each night for a long time and when I finally felt it, I couldn't get enough of it. Poor Jazz got tired of me jostling her tummy in an attempt to make Shybang move but what a thrill it was for me when I felt that little life flop around in there. One day I palpated one of my friends pregnant mares (via the rear end)and that was a first time deal too. Once you push passed the resistant muscles your hand is in this vast open area and when I moved my hand downward, you could feel the uterus just below the intestine that your hand was in and I was able to feel her mare's baby's head. Too cool!!! Only 4 more months until we get to see Angels little April Angel. I can't wait!!! Take a deep breath granny - it will all be alright. Keep in touch. Love Pattie and Shybang

Hey - sorry it's been so long - We are still alive and kicking - still have a tarp on my roof but the new shingles, tar paper, flashing, etc etc is stacked up in my driveway and waiting for my turn. It should be done this month. I sure hope before Christmas. So Angel is getting close now - how exciting!! I remember when Jazz was 6 months and I was getting so excited so I just told myself to push it out of my mind (because 5 more months seems so far off). It will be here before your know it though. Can't wait for the pictures. How's the new house - is it great to be in it finally? I have been being assigned so much forces overtime and my hours are so screwy that I just haven't been going on line much but I just wanted to say hi and respond to your email from so long ago. Take care of that little mama and definitely make sure I see pics as soon as the little angel comes into the world. Ttyl Pattie and Shybang

Hi so glad to hear from you and how exciting that you got into you new house. Is the barn still in the works? You need to post a pic of the new house - would love to see it. Sorry I have not been on the site too much lately - Work has been taking just about all of my weekday time and then I am so busy getting all my chores done on weekends I don't even go on at all unless it is just to answer blogs that have come in. I had to leave last month for the hurricane too. I loaded up the horses, dog and bird and headed for Waco on Thursday night and got back home on Sunday. I did sustain roof damage and got some water in one room of my house but nothing I couldn't take care of. The roof is still waiting to be fixed but that could take a long time with all the damage that people have in the area. I was blessed compared to the folks in Galveston though. So happy that you have finally moved into your new home. Don't forget to post a pic - how are Angels legs coming along? Is she going to be ok? Wow - 5 months pregnant - only 6 to go. I can't wait to see her baby's pics. Hope you don't miss the birth. Gotta go get the oil changed in my truck - due to the evacuation, my truck is way too many miles overdue at this point. ttyl Love pattie and shybang

I would love to see pictures of the house. Sounds like you are very close to being done. Yes I am working entirely too much but I don't have much choice, that is one of the reasons I am going to try to take my retirement by April. I want to work closer to home and I don't want to lose the lump sum retirement option which we feel pretty strongly won't be an option with the new union contract next April. I'm still working on getting my truck paid off which is a prerequisite to being able to retire so I have to work the overtime to make the extra money needed to pay off that truck. I haven't been able to ride for way too long too. Now it is too hot. We are getting temps of 100 over the last couple of days and with the heat index it feels hotter than that. I just can't work the horses when it is that hot - for them and for me too. Hopefully it will break in the next few days. It is unusual even for Houston to get quite this hot. Has Angel started showing her pregnancy yet? I can't rememeber - how far along is she now? ttyl Pattie and Shybang

Thanks for visiting Little Bear's page - yes, she is 29 rapidly approaching 30! I think we've kept each other looking young through the years : ) Angel certainly looks like an angel - walking/gaited horses are very popular in my neck of the woods. We'll be looking for a 2nd horse soon. I plan to retire Bear from riding before she tells me its time (that doesn't get her off the hook from playing tag or going jogging with me in the mornings tho)

Hi Angel
Wow - so close to moving in - that's great. I know what you mean about outside work - my fencing needs to be painted - hopefully will accomplish when the cooler fall weather arrives. And I plan to trim some trees and landscape shrubs today too. I haven't been on much lately either. I am working too much. They are talking about 10 hr days 4 days a week. I would love that and having 3 days off - I just wonder if we would really get that 3rd day or if we will have to work overtime on that day. Right now our overtime requirement is 12 hours a week to avoid being forced to work on our day off. Sounds like it would be nice but I have to wonder. Don't work too hard - will talk to you later - left a vote for Angel.

Whenever I can I will check out whatever I can think of. I'm going to check with a friend of mine. She knows alot of people and if she knows anyone with TWH's I'll see if she can pick their brains and see if we can come up with something to check. I'd sure like to be able to find something. Hey - what happened with Angel's foot? Is she okay? What did the farrier have to say about it. Hope all is well with the little mama. I was searching the websites the other day to see if I could find any info on Medicen Man's babies. Any idea as to what state they might be in? It is so hard to track them if they are not registered. I wonder if you put ad's in TWH publications if the owners would see them. It would be so great if you could locate one and be able to get him/her. Hope Angel is okay - let me know. Pattie

A Long Note from Shybang about the Camping Trip
I'm back! Wow did we have fun. My human mom drove us about 2 hours to the National Park on Thursday late afternoon. We got there around 6:30pm and she and her friend set up camp - I had a little pipe fenced corral and the dog Rico got to stay in the trailer with mom. What a wimp. He had to have the air conditioning. I had my water bucket, my pellet bucket and my hay bag so I was happy. We went out on the trail on Friday in the morning and rode several hours. There is this big wooden bridge that goes over the river on the trail we were on. It's way high over the river and kinda scarey. And it is a pretty long bridge with no railings. Sort of makes you dizzy if you look at the water but we did it and mom's friend got a picture of us going across it. Will get mom to post one when we get them back. There were rocky hills to climb and places where you were high in the hills and could look out through the trees and over these big rocks at the valley and lake covered with blooming lilly pads below. It was beautiful. We saw deer too. I scared one of them back into the trees. I'm tough. Mom said she was real pleased with how I did. She expected me to be a wild child because she had not taken me riding since October. I only had one episode when she wouldn't let me go first and I figured if I threw a fit I could get her to let me go ahead of her friend. I threw a good one too. I shook my head to try to shake off the pressure of the bit and then I did a semi-rear. Just enough to launch myself into the air in a forward leap so that when I landed on my front feet, I could buck my heels to the sky....but it didn't work. My mom calls it my 'airs above the ground move' but after that she was more determined than ever that I would not be lead horse so I had to let her have her way. Since I walk faster than the others I did eventually work my way back to lead horse but it took a while. Every time mom saw that I was about to pass her friend she would rein me back but I finally got to be first again. We got to play in the lake a little too. Let me tell you, if you ever get to go into a lake with lilly pads, don't bother, they are not good to eat. Yuck! We also went to the boating area where people put their boats in the water. We stopped there to get a drink but those boat monsters (fishing boats and canoes) scared me at first. I was already nervous looking at them then someone reved the motor on a Jet Ski that was out of the water on it's trailer to get the water out of the lines and I almost jumped on Bebe, mom's friends horse. BeBe doesn't like me very much and she really didn't like that but I was scared. Like I said before, I'm tough so I did get over it. On the second day we went to the same spot and the canoes were coming in from a canoe trip and I dared them to get near me. See if you can make me move, I thought. We came back to camp for the hot afternoon and went out again in the evening and then again on Saturday morning. It was fun but I was poop

A Note For You.
That's so sad about your husbands horse Reactor. Sometimes I think it is harder for men to recover from that type of loss than it is for us women. Hope the baby will be just the thing to give him that bond he is looking for. Although we both know he will never replace what he lost with Reactor, but he can start a new bond that can be just as strong. Now I will pray even harder for things to go well.

This is the end of the blog I just sent below. Guess I out talked myself and it ran out of space. Sorry it is so long. Sounds like it would be great if you could get the additional land. Does it border your land? It's great that you work from home. That is something I would love. I know some of the Healthcare Insurance companies are now training people and after about a year they let you work from home. Oh if only I could land a job like that. I am also going to look at some of the new hospitals that are going up along Hwy 59. Some of them are only 15 minutes from my home. Much better than the 1 to 1.5 hour drive I have now. Well, I know you have things to do and this novel of a blog has already taken too much of your time. I'm excited about Angel's baby and can't wait to see him/her. Thanks for the encouragement about the job/career change. I am sure it will all work out. I am being a silly human trying to control everything myself when I know all along that the Lord will take the control. Was Angel checked by the vet before she was bred? I had Jazz checked out and cultured to be sure she had no infection or bad bacteria present in her before the breeding. If she was checked, I am sure the vet would have alerted if there was evidence of anything that could cause potential problems. I heard so many horror stories when Jazz was in foal. For some reason people like to do that but I kept reminding myself that there are far more happy healthy foals born than there are ones with problems. It would be foolish not to be aware of the bad things and what you can do to help prevent them but chances are more in your favor that everything will go without any trouble at all. My friend and riding buddy owns YB Painted Ranch in Waller, TX. and she has done breeding of paints & quarterhorses for a number of years. She's had no mishaps with mares giving birth. She has one mare who has a tendency to retain part or all of the placenta which can be detrimental to the mare but knowing this and having the vet out to make sure that all of the placenta is out takes care of that problem. If the mare does not pass it, it can be removed. The importance here is with time so if there is no placenta within 30 minutes call the vet. Better to have the vet out anyway so they can be sure there is none of it left behind. I located Jazz's placenta in the field and put it in a heavy plastic bag so that ants etc couldn't damage it before the vet came. It's incredible how heavy that placenta is. When you have time go to and check out the website. Lots of foal pics to get you even more excited. Jazz and Shybang have pages in the mares section and they appear in the Friends & Fun section and Shybang is in the Training and Show sections. the YB stands for Yauch Barrett - her last name and mine. The YB Painted Ranch was a dream we came up with and she made it a reality. I wasn't able to go in with her on it financially but she kept my initial as part of the name since it was 'our' idea and she used me as a consultant on horse issues. She has enough knowledge now that she doesn't even need my brain any more. It's a nice site. To answer your question, I have 5 acres which includes my yard. About 3 1/2 acres are horse pasture and 1 1/2 is the yard. Wow, 3 mortgages is alot to be responsible for. I owned a condo which I leased for 12 years - it was where I lived before Joe and I got married. I used the rent to pay the mortgage and paid it off in 13 years. I gave it to Joe in the divorce so that he wouldn't try to force the sale of the house or try to take part of my retirement. To be honest, I was tired of being a landlord although my tenant is a wonderful person. Having the responsibility of the house and land is enough for me on my own. Well, on

Hey Little Mama
Heres a vote for you and the young'un-to-be from Shybang. Wow what a long 2 weeks. I worked 12 hours of overtime the 1st wk and 5 hrs the 2nd. Hope the money makes it worth it because it sure does wear me out. Will keep our fingers and hooves crossed for an easy go of it in April. Is this her first baby? I visited my financial advisor on Wednesday and he did a work up and it looks like I should be able to take my lump sum retirement package in April. I will be looking for another job close to home but it will be for less money I am sure. I should save $300/month just on gas (more as the price goes up). I can pull up to 4 1/2% from the interest on the retirement account (which I will combine with an IRA I already have) to supplement the new job. Scarey but I can only imagine what it might be like to work for an employee friendly company rather than a company that acts as if they own you and don't expect you to have a life outside of the company. My divorce was final on June 16th so I have the house and property and all the critters that I am soley responsible for now so that is what makes me nervous about the change. I am going to take it on a leap of faith. God has provided for me so many ways in the past so I see no reason for him to abandon me now. If things don't work out and I have to sell my place then I guess that means he just wants me in a different place. I think I can handle it all with his help though. So we have 2 good things to look forward to in April. A new baby horse and a new career/life. Blessings both. Have a great Sunday. Love Shybang and Pattie

Glad things are going along okay. Yeah you did mention the house remodeling - that's a piece of work! It'll be so nice for you as well as the horses when you get the barn done. You have plenty of time so hopefully all will be done by baby time. Not too much going on here. Lots of thunderstorms lately - mostly in the afternoon. I've been working so much overtime that I haven't had much time to anything else. Did 12 hours last week but my animals suffer because they don't get the time they like to have. This is the busy season in the telephone repair industry due to storms etc so it'll be like this through the summer - yikes!! I have the week of July 4th off - can't wait - will be taking Shybang to a national park about 2 hrs from here (maybe 3 hrs) with some friends on Jul 3,4 & 5 to camp and ride. They have an equestrian area with corrals for the horses and hookups for our horse trailers. We have gooseneck trailers and have living areas so we get to have A/C thank God - it's too hot to be outside without a/c to sleep in. We are in the upper 90's now and hot hot hot. We usually ride in the morning - stay in the a/c of our trailers in the middle of the day to eat or nap or just sit in a shady area under a tree until it cools off some and then we ride again in the cooler everning. Its fun we see alot of deer at those times of day too. I'll get my chores done the first part of the week and then 3 days of camping and riding - Heaven. A Note For You.
Hi!! Shybang just left a vote and a virtual apple -O for the little mama. Sounds promising. We had to do Jazz twice. The first AI did not take - I was so disappointed but I took her home and the vet had me give her a shot that brought her back in heat within minutes. She sweated profusely and stretched out like she had a colic attack (due to cramping caused by the shot) and 30 minutes later she was normal again. I took her back to the vet 5 days later (I think it was 5) and they checked her and then called the breeder (who was in Oregon) and had another shipment overnighted and inseminated her and that did it. I think the 1st time was because I had taken her in to be checked in preparation for breeding and the vet cultured her etc and found she was at a perfect point in her cycle so we quickly called the breeder to send a shipment and they inseminated her the next day but I think or timing was such that we just missed the point of opportunity for pregnancy. But it was well worth the cost of the extra shipment to get Shybang. She was exactly what I wanted. A filly, black or bay, and her markings were exactly what I had imagined. I wanted more dark than white and that's what I got. It gets so hot and sunny here in the summer that mostly white horses can suffer with sunburn. Don't you get pretty hot there in
Georgia? I have just Jazz and Shybang. I used to have 4 horses but one was my soon to be ex husband's which we sold because he wasn't really into horses and the other was my first horse, an appaloosa named Sugar who had to be put down when she was 25. Her back legs had become unstable and after so many years, one morning she just couldn't get up. It was so hard because her mind was still bright - I cried and cried. I learned so much with her and did everything from dressage, trail, cross country jumping and stadium jumping with her. She was a great horse. She'll be gone 5 years this Aug 13th & I still miss her. ttyl.

Thanks for the vote and note. Jazz was bred on April 5 & 6 (I did AI with cooled shipped semen). On May 12 we took her by the clinic's stallion and she did not respond to his squeals & snorts so we ultrasounded her and the only thing you could see was a small blob that was attached to the upper wall. It looked like a small upside-down & backward comma. That was Shybang in the making. The vet made a photograph of the ultrasound and it is the first picture in my Shybang baby photo album. I was so excited. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you. Keep me posted. Shybang's Mom

Yum, yum and a tasty virtual carrot it was.
Hi - Oh what an exciting time you are in for !!! Way to go Angel. Shybang's mom is a sorrel/white overo and her dad is a black/white tobiano who sires a high percentage of black based colors and 100% tobiano since he is homozygous for tobiano. Shybang is bay/white with black points - her bay is sort of a mahogany bay probably due to her mom's red color. Really pretty though. Your mare looks like a light bay to me. Especially with the black sections of her mane and her black tail. Does she have any black spots or marks on her legs below the knee? I really think she is bay. If she is, she should have a big chance of having a black based foal. (black, or bay or even grulla but more of a chance to produce black or bay.) Go to and take a look at Dominant Jeans. That is Shybang's dad and check out his son (Shybang's half brother) Check My Jeans. He is an awesome grulla stallion. I wish he wasn't Shybang's brother or she would be having a baby whether I can afford it or not. I think he is awesome!! Anyway, I was so excited when Jazz was pregnant with Shybang. I used to go out to the field at night and put my hands on her stomach so I could see if I could feel Shybang move. I would jostle her tummy to try to make the foal move and the first time it happened I was in awe. I had Jazz stitched to prevent possibility of infection but then the closer it got to foaling time the more I worried about it. I even had nightmares about her starting to go into labor with the stitches so I had them removed about a week before the foaling date. Jazz was due at 11 months exactly on March 2,2002 which was a Saturday so I took that week off work. I worried that she would go an extra 2 weeks because alot of first time mothers do go longer but don't you know that Jazz had Shybang at about 6 am on that Saturday March 2nd. I had the whole week to play with her. I missed the birth by about 30 minutes. I woke up at six and wanted to go out but I had checked Jazz before I went to bed and the baby had not turned yet so I said forget it. Then, I couldn't go back to sleep so I got up and took the binoculars to check the small pasture and lo and behold there was a flash of white moving next to Jazz. I don't even remember putting on clothes I got out there so fast. It was one of the most exciting times I can ever remember. You are in for a treat. If you have any questions that I can answer just ask away. I got a book called Blessed Are the Broodmares and it told all the horrible things to look for. If you read it, you can't let it scare you because chances are, none of it will happen but it is good to know in case you need to do something before the vet arrives if you do have a problem. I read the birthing part about 5 times before Shybang's birthday to be sure to know - then look at what happened...Jazz did it all on her own. But it is a very informative book. Yikes !! Sorry this is too long. Good luck & let me know all about it. ttyl Shyb

Hi Angel
Left a vote for you. Don't worry about the comment about the book - I usually check messages about twice a day so I just deleted it - no harm done. Hey I really appreciate you leaving a review on Amazon. Thanks so much. Things like that really help. I have an attorney who is also into movie production & acting and he read it and really liked it and is going to see if he can write it up as a screenplay and get it sold for a movie. Wouldn't that be neat. Of course, those types of things take a long time but it is an exciting concept. We'll just have to wait and see how it goes. Thanks again for the positive response. Here is a virtual carrot for Angel. %>>> ttyl. Shybang's mom Pattie

Another vote from Shybang
Thanks for the blog and the vote!! I am so happy you read my book and even happier that you liked it. Most of the really horse savvy people do figure what you did at the end. Colic is also a thought. (Sorry, I'm being vague so others who may be reading it or about to don't know what we are talking about)I deleted your blog so they won't see. Don't want to devulge it to those who haven't read it yet. Pass the word about it to your friends. The more it gets around, the sooner I can start work on the sequel which I have already written 2 chapters of but had to put aside while I get this one out. Have a wonderful Memorial Day and thanks for letting me know that you read and liked the book. ttyl Pattie (Shybang's Mom)

Hi Angel
It's Shybang. I'm answering your last blog. Glad to hear you are ordering the book - I think you will really like it. I hope so. You asked about the author and I have to be honest. Since I am a horse I did not write it. (Ha Ha..or is that neigh, neigh) but yes my mom did write it. It took about a year to research the info needed to describe the areas that the story takes place in and get the story outlined and then write it. Then the grueling task of editing it and getting it into the proper format for publishing and checking all the spelling etc, etc. and making sure the spacing was all correct and on and on. It took about 10 months to write it and get the manuscript into the correct format and all, then it was submitted and was edited again by the publisher and after those corrections were made, it went back to the publisher and took about 2 more months until it actually became a book. It was quite a journey but one my mom felt good about once it was done. My mom's name is Patricia Marlowe Barrett. She answers to Pattie. You will see her name on the cover just above my picture. There is a picture of her on the back with her sister's dog Mitsie. We would love to hear your review when you finish it. Love Shybang
