Quarter Horse from St. Joseph, MO

Awesome King

About Me

Active within 3584 Days

I am from St. Joseph, MO and I've been a Club Horse member for 10 years, 1 month and 13 days

Nicknames: Dan, Dan O Brian, Hooligan, Trouble Maker, Bucket Head

Age: 12 years old

Gender: Gelding

Breed: Quarter Horse

Color: sorrel, star, hind left sock

Type of Riding: Dan's future lies in the ranch sorting pens and reining arenas.

My Horse's Achievements: Yes, sort of. He doesn't have an ounce of buck in him and is slowly beginning to learn how to follow the rein and move off my leg effectively.

My Horse's Favorite Treat: grain and messages

My Horse's Favorite Things To Do: getting pampered and chasing cows!

Pet Peeves: Definately people telling him what to do. He's so sound and absalutely afraid of nothing but fresh out of the pasture Dan's a little persnickity about people tapping on his butt trying to get him to move over.

My Horse's motto: Sometimes you just got to get after it a little bit.

How We Met

I had been learning, practicing, and working hard at an AQH breeding farm for quite some time until they figured I had come far enough and presented me with a colt to train myself. They let me choose out of the sorrel colts from 06-07 and it came down to an adorable and well tempered Apendix filly and Dan. I knew from the start that I needed a gelding and Dan has fit the bill perfectly- teaching me double what I attempt to teach him. (PS: the two cute kids with the rest of Dan's pics are our Amish farriers sons. The older is trying to drag his shyer younger into the pic and pose at the same time!).

About your comment on Max that you posted a looon time ago. Yeah he is very spooky. but a fun guy to ride! He goes into the extended trot and it feels amazing. he switches leads every stride. He can pirhouette! he is so awesome! But hes just a big stinking scaredy cat! The last time I tried to get onh im with the stepping stoll, I got on him, then he stepped backward to get away from it, then got his foot caught in it and then he started freaking out so I had to jump off! hes a lunatic!

ranch sorting results
Dan went maybe about 4 runs and came out with one time. After reviewing the footage, the time was about 60:41 but they gave it to us as 60:00 wich is really as close under the wire you can get. Oh well! He did well with the cows, but every time I tried to push him he got a little upset. He needs to learn to turn his body and not just his head! My other mount was Red and he did splendid! he SO TOTALLY took it to those cows with major cutting moves and even took it down a notch when we needed to to preserve the run. I think my best time was a 39 and I was consistantly in the 40's. WAHOO! Dan probably won't be actually competing for a while due to his slowness in the ring but he'll just get better!

Dan's first Ranch Sorting is TOMOROW! i CAN'T BELIEVE IT! I hope to at LEAST get a time- i don't care if it's fast, slow, lucky, or hard-got but I want it under 60. WAHOO! Oh, and my mum will be out to film it! My only concern is speed. Course, you can always juice your horse up, you know? He doesn't have a single problem with the cows, it's in his blood, though his front left shoulder has been bothering him just a little bit so we've going easy behind some jersies for the past few days. CAN'T WAIT! wish us luck!

sweet harmony
So check this out guys, I got Dan in with a couple of jersey calves and it was like the light bulb just went right on! he pinned his ears back and tryed to bite the cows on the butt and worked them and everything! i can [[[[NOT]]]] wait to get sorting with him! well anywho, his kicking habit has like totally disapeared completely, he's got a great set of breaks, he rides smooth through all three gaits (walk, trot, canter) and is so soft in the mouth you wouldn't believe it. an i broke him in all myself! well, i little help with groundwork in the beginning from the boss, but i'm the only one who has ever ridden him and now I can basicly do whatever with him. I knew it all clicked when this evening I just got on him bareback (for the first time) and rode him around with nothing but a halter and lead rope. it was just like... wow... this is MY horse that [[I]] trained... it was just the coolest feeling ever.

ahh the wonderful kickin habbit! well yes i do have some advice. i had to deal with that problem with mesa when she was little. basically the ONLY way i could get her to stop kicking at me was to pop her. and i mean i had to pop her hard so that she would relat kickin to somthing bad. anything that a horse dose bad you have to relate it do somthing bad or somthing they dont like to do. with mesa the only thing i could do was just pop her. you have to stay consistant. wut ever makes him kick attempt to deal with that. for example mesa didnt like her feet to be touch so she would kick so i touched her feet and everytime she would kick i would say mesa no and pop her and i would do it untill she litterally stoped kicking for that day. now the next day they will usually try kickin again so you have to deal with it everyday. and it can be a very slow proccess. it just depends on how fast the horse realizes if he kicks he gets hurt. now when i say pop them dont think i mean beat the horse bc there is a big difference but its just like a kid who gets in trouble they get a woopin so its the same concept. and if poping him dosnt work then try somting else. the main thing is when they do somthing bad associate it with somthing they hate or atleast dont like so aventally they will realize that if they kick then they get poped and so theyll stop unless they dont mind being poped then you have to try somtihng else. it took about a week of constantly working with mesa to get her to stop, now you can do wutever you wont to her and she will not kick for anything. and if she dose act like shes going to all i have to do is raise my hand and say mesa no and shell stop.

now i also no that when training other people horses you cant always use ur own way of traing on thos horses, so if you cant pop the horse then youll have to try somting else with him.

i hope all of that made sense its esaier to say it then type it all! well let me know if you didnt understand anything or you have any questions. and keep me updated on the training!!!

escape and capture TRUE STORY
Okay, you ever feel like a cowgirl? I know I did this last weekend! On saturday I saddled Dan early in the morning and lunged him around, planning on leaving him saddled until the evening while I rode some other geldings then actually riding him last. Well, I tied him to a post right outside the roundpen and let me give you a quick layout. On the west side of the barn, if you just stand looking straight out, from left to right it goes the stud's herd's pasture, the longhorns', then the geldings' and their pasture is set up to they can run up from their pasture into a double corral (meaning a lot right behind the barn (north) that you can divide by closing a gate and at the very end of the lot is the roundpen.) So Dan was tied outside the roundpen and I was riding the new Palomino gelding back and forth between the lot and the geldings pasture. Did that for 2-3 hours and Dan was still tied. Then I got on another geldling who was doing so great I decided we were ready for the longhorns. We go in there, he wouldn't quit neighing so I figured we better head back before the stud horse got wind of us. As we turned around, you guess it, Dan was booking it out into the geldings pasture fully tacked, untied, and flying like none other. Not bucking, just cookin' out to the remaining geldings in the pasture. So me and Banner (the riding gelding) go bookin up to the barn and follow Dan out into the pasture, successfully catching him the first time by the rein. Well, we led him all the way back to the barn when Banner decided not to open a gate so naturally I went to correct him, and, violla, Dan had a cow, pulled back, Banner had a brain fart (mud and all and the gate) and we lost him again. I went out and tried for about a stinking hour to catch him like we did the first time but to no avail, so, I had to resort to the rope. Well, use your imagination to picture how things went from there. But yes, I successfully roped my little stinker (and i'm not half bad at it!) and caught him eventually and got back to the barn. And yeah, I was in trouble, but hey, no one got hurt, everything was in tact, nothing was broke and I learned a heck of lot in a matter of day. So remember folks, close your gates and only tie your horse with a fitting halter. And DON'T consider yourself a cowgirl until you can rope with half decency! ;)

I didnt want to sell her b/c if she was ridden alot then shes fine, but we needed a good trail horse (which she is but for an experienced rider not a 40 year old man with athritis in his knee!)so we sold him to a thoroughbred breeder so hes breeding her and then training her for dressage!

Bucket head... he's bored out of his mind!
So his kicking wasn't quite so bad since last he's been handled. I rode him, 'course, and he was oober bored, it wasn't even funny. He got a little excited because he got to trot today, but soon realized he was only going in circles and he was fenced away from a more exciting world than trying to trot in circles and just quit. Well, it's about time this boy got a job to do and Boss's wife told me he's ready for a longhorn! YES! He also backs now, which was what I've been wanting to teach him because it just makes his set of brakes even better- but it is hard to tell since we've only walked for all the times we've ridden. (except for today where we trotted around about half of the round pen) Well, he did okay. I also put a personality chart thing in his pics that you can look at to get a better grasp of my boy.

Come visit me, Awesome King, Jenna & Awesome Cougarand.

Thanks for coming to visit Louie! He's a great guy! His moon blindness doesn't stop him from much and he's so darn cute I don't care at all :) When we're at camp in the summer the kids pet him and love him up all the time and he eats it up. He just gets skittish about his back end because he never knows if it's another horse coming to bug him or if it's a person approaching him from the rear. Oh well...he's fiesty that way...and that's what makes him great. Dan sounds like a great horse. What was your boss doing in Jamesport? Was it a show? Left a vote, come visit again soon.

So I called the boss tonight and I asked him how his trip to Jamesport went last week because I wasn't able to go. He said he ended up taking Dan with the rest of horses but they had to twitch him! UHG! I thought surely the farrier (who I met, he's a really nice guy with ADORABLE kids and trains horses really well) would kick some Danny-booteh, and I guess I wasn't let down. Now that this weekend is approaching I'm really trying to rack my brain of something I can do to teach a lesson here. Any ideas...?
