How We Met

When the farrier came to do Dandy's feet, he heard me and my dad talking about maybe getting a younger horse that I could train, and he told us about a 6 year old Tennessee Walker he wanted to sell because he didn't have anymore room in his barn.We went to take a look at her and I was kinda disappointed because I knew that I wouldn't be able to train her because she was already broke, but our farrier said that he was actually still training her to do a few things like barrels and jumping.I talked it over with my dad that night and decided to buy her!We picked her up the next day!.

Hey, that's okay, I get behind in my blogs too. It was good to hear from you. I've been really busy building a peacock house for our two peacocks and a new pen. Then I'm so tired in the evening that it would be dangerous for me to write. Someone gave us these two peacocks earlier this summer and they've been in this small 8 x 10 aviary that we built a few years ago for rescue birds. So now they'll have a nice house of that size and a 15 x 40 pen. I'm sure they'll appreciate the new space. My sister and a friend and I went hiking in the mountains today. We took all of our dogs except one and Pippin pulled his little cart. It's the first time he's been on such steep terrain and he did really well. We loaded some food and a drink onto the cart and two of the dogs, including Tiny (my little 15 year old rat terrier) who currently has a broken foot. She had a broken foot last December and the vet suspected that someone had stepped on it. Well, it looks just like it did then so I think someone stepped on her again but I don't know who. I'm giving her metacam and that has helped a lot with the swelling and she's hardly limping anymore. And then the other day I discovered that she had the worst ear mite infection I've ever seen. Lots of thick black goo. I spent and hour and a half cleaning her ears and then gave her ear mite medication. The next day I noticed she was completely deaf which was very worrying but today she seems to have a little of her hearing back. Thank goodness. Anyway, back to Pippin, he was amazing. It was hard work going uphill with the weight but downhill with the cart pushing him he handled it like a professional. He collected himself properly and powered himself from the rear to keep his footing and not be sent sliding down. I guess it must just come naturally to some horses. I'm so proud of him. We stopped for a picnic and I unharnessed him so he could catch his breath and dry off a little. Of course, he bugged us and tried to steal our cookies and soda, and my hat, and the dog leash, etc. And he loves sitting in peoples laps but I already had Tiny in mine so there wasn't room. I've never heard of other horses trying to sit in one's lap. It's a little strange and he probably weighs about 180 pounds. Well, anyway we had a good time and once we got back to the base of the mountain where it wasn't so steep he cantered all the way. That was a lot of fun. The other two were on bikes, in case you were wondering how that worked. They rode their bikes to the base and then we hiked from there. Well, I think I've written a book. Here's a vote for you and I hope you had a great weekend. ttyl

Hey, it was great to hear from you again. Yesterday I took Pippin out with the cart and he was just so good. He cantered fast through the forest and slowed nicely to a fast trot when I told him and then we were able to squeeze through these two trees without any hitch while still trotting. Quite an accomplishment for him. And then he backed up as well to get into the right position for another entrance. Today was quite exciting for me too. I rode Prince this morning without Eddie being there and he was so good. He went over the jumps without any refusals and did all kinds of gait changes and stops with no problem. Well, he knocked down one of the jumps so I dismounted so that I could put it back up and also it would give good practice for mounting Prince out in the field. Well, he doesn't like standing still and to make it worse, when I went to mount, the saddle started slipping so I had to abort and tighten the girth. So then I mounted and had just position myself and my feet in the stirrups and he started bucking like crazy. There was no pause between the bucks and they were pretty big. I couldn't pull his head up because I didn't have a good hold on the reins and I bailed. I don't think I would have been able to stay on anyway. Well, I chose a bad place to land because I landed on a metal fence post that was at a 45 degree angle. I am so glad that I wear a helmet because I landed head first and it broke the back of the helmet completely. I ended up no worse than a bad bruise on my calf and a major headache which is steadily getting worse so I think I'm going to head off to bed soon. Prince, of course, took off and charged around the field until he found something to eat. I eventually got back on him with someone holding him and he again was a perfect gentleman with nice trotting and perfect attention to my aids. What a crazy ride! How's everything on your side of the country? It was in the high 90s here today and still lots of smoke but there's a slim chance it will rain later in the week and it's supposed to cool down. We'll believe it when we see it. It will probably thunder without rain and start yet more fires. Now, that's not pessimistic but pretty realistic. It's happened every other time they've said it would rain. Oh well, such is life in a mountain desert. We went blackberry picking this afternoon and I rode my bike and brought Pippin with us. He loved it and he was loose and just stayed right with us the whole time. I think he figured that we had finally figured out that life is supposed to be about grazing and eating all day. He was in heaven. Well, I hope you're doing fine and here's a vote for you. Sorry to bore you with such a long blog. ttyl

Thanks for the condolences for Maia. We miss her. She was only 4 years old so she was pretty young. I am sorry that I haven't written sooner. I fully intended to get back to you but I was working on replacing the main electric panel all day Wednesday and so we had no power and then yesterday I was desperately catching up with my dog blogs. It took me until almost midnight to get everything working again. I guess I'm pretty slow. My sister helped me with some of the necessary destruction work that had to precede the replacement. That did help speed things up some. And then when I was hooking all the wires back up I accidentally attached a line that was no longer in use. It had been marked with a wirenut that must have fallen off with all the commotion. Well, the end of the line must have been crossed or something because when I turned on the breaker there was a loud bang and a bright flash. It certainly made me jump. Fortunately, it didn't cause any damage. Today I finished all the reconconstruction of the wall and general area and so everything's back to normal except that now we have a new huge panel that hopefully won't catch on fire like the old one was doing. Well, as for your your question about Pippin. I started to teach him tricks when I first got him at 4 months old. He picks things up pretty quickly. He didn't start pulling the cart until he was 2 and then only for short periods of time and with little weight. Now he's pretty strong and can even pull two people. Well, Pippin's doing fine and being as cute as ever. I discovered yesterday that there is a small boy that has been visiting him and feeding him carrots. He's pretty cute too and just the right size for Pippin. He told me that he rides his grandma's minis. I don't think I would trust Pippin as a riding horse though. He'd probably take off. I'm sorry about your cat and I know you still miss her. It's always sad when we lose our pets. Well, here's a vote for you and I hope you have a great labour weekend. ttyl

so much for checking out Pippin's movie. I'm glad you liked it. Well, I didn't train Pippin specifically for the movies. It's just something I like to do. He usually learns the basic moves a of trick within doing it 3 times and then we have to perfect it. If I'm working with him daily on something then it takes a week or two before he has it down pat. We had a sad day on the 21st. One of our goats had to be put down. She was the matriarch of the herd and her name was Maia and she was one of the sweetest goats we've known. She was so friendly and we could do anything with her. She was pretty tough on her subjects and ruled her herd with an iron hoof. She didn't allow any mischief and expected them to show her proper respect. If they followed her rules then she was a very kind and benevolent leader. She was also one of the biggest goats I've known and at over 3 feet was taller than Pippin. Unfortunately, she had a heart problem and was having problems with water retention. We all miss her very much. I took Pippin out with the cart a couple of days ago and my sisters rode their bikes. He absolutely loved it and easily kept up with them. He kept trying to bite their back tyres and they said he was a very hard trainer. We were going up the mountain so they couldn't go as fast. I don't think he'd keep up on the flat. I was very impressed with him though. He didn't seem to tire at all and thoroughly enjoyed himself. So did I. It's nice to sit back sometimes and enjoy the fruits of training. Well, here's a vote for you and I hope you had a great weekend. ttyl

for your comments, votes, and prayers! dandy is doing better and he is able to eat grass and hay only and the vet gave him a pain killer so he could eat. he is not allowed to have grain because it will get down in the cut and slow the healing process and probably get infected. PLEASE pray that it will continue to get better, and no infections to set in. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!

joy and dandy

hey! thats cool u rode the other day. how was ur trail ride? yesturday my bff came down and we lunged Blossom over some jumps. she did really good. i think the highest she jumped yesturday was 2'6. then my friend and i jumped blossom a little bareback. only over a tiny cross rail but still fun. today we're going to put my english saddle on and really jump. we board Blossom at a barn five minutes away from my house for free because we take care of the barn. we muck and feed while the owner lives in Ocala. so it works out really well. wat about u? have a vote for ur Blossom :) - Blossom
