To get them to lay flatter after pulling the hood off before you show-- take a small piece from the bottom of the band and pull down while holding the rubber band itself. It should tighten the hair down next to the neck. I have transformed a whole mane's look by doing this (helpful especially for the horses that have rubbed overnight).

Good article- but banding is a skill that takes a lot of practice. The sleepwear hood at the end is adorable.
