Icy Conditions Ahead

Drive a tractor or truck over frozen ground in paddock/turnout areas to smash up sharp sheet ice that can cut horses’ legs and cause nasty spills—use grader blades to help further break up large frozen chunks that can lead to sole bruising. Once the sheet ice is broken, cover the frequently traveled areas with bedding to level the footing. Use caution if applying granular salt: It can be caustic to horses’ feet and legs.
