Champion pole benders share their secrets for faster runs.

Ever watch a champion pole bender make a winning run? The horse seems as if he’s only shifting his shoulders, not even turning around the poles, while the rider guides him with invisible cues. Ever watch a beginner run at a local gymkhana? Wide turn to the left, wide turn to the right—half circles down and back—maybe a tipped pole or two. How do you achieve a tighter run and improve your times to look like a pro? Champion pole benders, Jerry Barrett, of Winslow, Ind., and Ross Carnahan, of Vincennes, Ind., share their secrets for success.
