Every horse is beautiful in its own way, and as editors of Horse Illustrated, we see this every day when we review submissions for “In Focus.” However, sometimes the most beautiful horses are not flattered by their photos. We receive many photos that are out of focus, too dark, too light, portray unsafe riding or are poor quality printouts. Unfortunately, we cannot publish those photos in the magazine.
We are here to help you and your horse become part of “In Focus.” We love publishing photos of horses of any breed, color, age or riding discipline, and their adult riders, too. (Kids, check out Young Rider) Since we need high quality images portraying safe horsemanship, follow these simple guidelines to help you take that picture-perfect shot for “In Focus.”
Submission Guidelines
• Photos must be focused, well-composed images of your horse(s) taken in a safe environment. (No barbed-wire fencing or other hazards.)
• Photos of riders should portray safe, responsible horsemanship, which includes wearing a helmet (unless you’re riding in a show class where it is not applicable) or traditional western hat. Put your best foot forward for your moment of “In Focus” fame with neat, clean tack and turnout, too.
• Images taken in the early morning or late afternoon light are most flattering to you and your horse.
• We cannot publish photos printed on regular paper. Film and digital photos professionally printed produce the best quality images.
• E-mailed digital images need to be: 300 DPI, high resolution, jpeg or tiff format, and at least 3 inches by 4 inches in size. Take photos at a high resolution by setting your camera to the highest quality.
• Click here to review a copy of our Digital Image Guidelines if you plan to e-mail your submissions.
Receiving photos of you and your horse(s) is such a satisfying part of our job and we can’t wait to see what you’ll send us next. Now that you are armed with this new information, grab a camera and your horse and see what you can capture behind the lens.
