In promotion of its mission to “own responsibly,” the Unwanted Horse Coalition (UHC) has launched a new website and released an awareness brochure, hoping to increase education.

“The website and brochure are our first steps in educating current and future owners, breeders, traders, and others involved with horses about the issue of the unwanted horse,” says Dr. Tom Lenz, coalition chairman. “Our goal is to make the coalition unnecessary.”

Both the website and brochure explain the UHC and its mission to reduce the number of unwanted horses and to improve their welfare.

The UHC was created following the Unwanted Horse Summit that was organized by the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) and held in conjunction with the American Horse Council’s annual meeting in April 2005. In June 2006, the group was folded into the American Horse Council and now operates under its auspices.

In addition to information about the UHC, the website also provides resources and links for retiring and rescuing horses, methods for handling the loss of a horse and suggestions to help people own responsibly.

The UHC plans to update the website regularly with news releases and publications describing the progress of the UHC and the plight of the unwanted horse. Both the website and the brochure provide information on how to become a member of the UHC and how to contribute.

I am very glad that they made this for the horses that are unwanted,
It is so sad to see a horse without food or water or shelter, and i am glad to see that someone is actually caring enough about horses.

Thank you for reporting on the UHC! I have the utmost respect for any organization whose declared goal is to make its own existence unnecessary. That's a true non-profit organization, and I sincerely hope they can achieve their goal!

I am so glad to learn of this website. What a great idea! I do not own a horse yet, but completely understand that when I am lucky enough to have one in my care, it will be for the horse's entire life, even after his riding years are past. I know there are many unwanted horses out there and am happy to have another resource that I can turn to to find out about available rescues.
